The Dragon Soul: Rise of the Black Dragon ReviewI first want to caveat this review by stating that I was unable to finish this book. I did however skip farther in to the book in order to surmise whether some of the issues I had run in to earlier were corrected.
I started reading "The Dragon Soul" and found myself struggling to turn each page. My first impressions of the book was that it was very cliché and upon reading the first 60 pages I noticed a lot of ideas that have come up in other fantasy works. This is not to say that they didn't have original overtones, but I definitely found myself scanning my memory for what book I had read it in before.
I can forgive lack of originality if the writing and characters can keep me engaged. Unfortunately the pages were marred with grammatical and spelling errors. I had to read some sentences two or three times just so my brain could put everything in the correct tense. I attempted to simply overlook the lack of fluidity in the writing style, but kept getting flustered by the challenges. It isn't all mix ups in tenses, if I had to guess It seems the author got simply overwhelmed and exhausted at fixing the editors corrections. You start to see _'s where there are punctuation and spelling mistakes and shows a general defeatist attitude where the author decided the editor may be right...but didn't want to take the time to edit out all the issues.
It also seems that a lot of the conversations in the book are forced and unnatural, and the writing was simply at a lower level than what I am accustomed to in this genre.
With that being said...I apologize to the author if I have in the least bit dissuaded him from writing a sequel to the story. I understand it feels impossible to get ripped to pieces by a proofreader and then go back through all of the work that has already been done. I believe this book and the ones to follow would do well if the time was taken to fix these issues - even if it means delaying your future book, and spending time to realize what this one could have been. The Dragon Soul: Rise of the Black Dragon Overviewyour heart gives you life . . .
