The Safeguard: A Novel of Georgia in 1864 ReviewI've read this author's other books, set in Egypt. She has worked in other eras, and this is her first published book set in the American Civil War. It starts out quickly with a brief chapter from the point of view of an army surgeon after a fierce battle on the outskirts of a small town in northwest Georgia. He has stepped outside his hospital tent, looked down the torn-up roadway and sees a woman walking among the wounded, giving water. She sees him and comes toward him...The story follows this woman, Lavinia Wheeler, who has opened her house as a hospital for the severely wounded. The summer wears on, the tide of fighting goes away toward Atlanta, and the small town faces the challenges of a backwater of the war. Marauders, refugees - and a developing love story between Lavinia and the soldier assigned to remain with her and the wounded as a safeguard.
I like the characters - they are full-blown and believable, and there is humor as well as harshness in the story, along with an interesting twist. The ending had me choked up but smiling. No, I'm not going to tell it.
I was interested to read the author's afterword about just what a 'Safeguard' is - interesting.
You'll love this book. I have it in paperback now.The Safeguard: A Novel of Georgia in 1864 OverviewMiss Lavinia Wheeler had watched as her world had been tornapart overthe courseof the past three years. When the Civil War came to her doorstep, her generosity in opening her house as a hospital brought a change in her life far beyond any blessing she couldhave dreamed of or asked for.
