Legon Ascension: Book Two in the Legon Series ReviewAs this book does not stand on its own, neither does this review. I direct the reader to my review of Legon Awakening for a more complete commentary on the series. All of my comments on that book apply to this one, with certain differences. As my further comments amount to a laundry list of nitpicks, I will tell you straight off that if you enjoyed book one, you will enjoy book two, and should purchase and read it forthwith. If that's good enough for you, then feel free to skip the rest of this review.
"Ascension" perpetuates the series' penchant for poor proofreading. The most common and egregious error made continues to be the confusion of homonyms. As I said in my review of the first book, these errors are distracting and unprofessional, but I only mention them because so many people get their panties in a bunch over them. Yes, they're annoying, but the story still gets told regardless, so I'm willing to disregard them in my evaluation of the story.
The story picks up literally right where the last book left off, to the point where the two books could have been one. It also ends in a not quite satisfactory place. I really could have used an epilogue of some sort--something that dwells for just a bit on the major events that occur right at the end of the book. I have no doubt that book three will continue this style.
This book covers a longer period of time than "Awakening", which is welcome--it's nice to see the characters advance as much as they do. This notwithstanding, the plot still lacks narrative tension; obstacles are few and easily overcome.
There are a couple of plot twists in the book, one of which was extensively telegraphed and easy to predict. The other, while in hindsight was quite foreshadowed, still felt like a huge surprise. Kudos to Nick for managing to blindside me with that one.
And now I find myself ending my review in the same manner as Nick ended the book--in a not quite satisfactory place.Legon Ascension: Book Two in the Legon Series OverviewJoin Legon and Sasha in the second book in the Legon series.
