Mel Bay Presents Mark Elf Jazz Interpretations, Vol. 1 ReviewI purchased this book after learning a chord melody solo to "Stella" and wanting to gain some ideas for soloing from a pro. I like Mark Elf's recordings and hoped to adapt some of his ideas and logic. The book has five completely different solos for Stella laid out in standard notation and tab. They are pretty good solos in themselves, but there are no author's notes on any of the material, and therefore no opportunity to learn about Mark's ideas or how he came to develop any of the lines. Any nexplanation would have been helpful to the learning improviser so that these solos would become more than just a plain set of transcriptions.
Mel Bay Presents Mark Elf Jazz Interpretations, Vol. 1 OverviewJazz Interpretations is a set of five choruses based on the chord changes for "Stella". They will provide the intermediate student a guide and sound linear approach to playing solid lines. Mark Elf played these examples in real time into a computer and they were transcribed by notation software. It is recommended that after playing through each example that the student learns 1 bar, 2 bar & 4 bar phrases and work them into his or her own solos.
