Echoes of Silence: A Mystery Featuring DI Tom Richmonds ReviewI have been a long-time fan of Marjorie Eccles and so was glad to find some of her books that I hadn't read available on Amazon.Echoes of Silence: A Mystery Featuring DI Tom Richmonds OverviewMoving back to Yorkshire was the last thing DI Tom Richmonds thought he would do.His superiors are also perturbed by his decision to transfer.Surely after the murder of the young girl, Yorkshire is the last place he should want to be?Is this Richmond's attempt to make peace with the past, or does he have ideas about reopening a bungled investigation?Whatever Richmond's intentions, events soon overtake him. When a local biographer is found murdered, the investigation leads Richmond straight to the Denshaw family. It's been ten years since eight-year-old Beth was killed, snatched from the garden of the Denshaw family home. Her corpse was found four months after her disappearance in the local park.Even though her mother confessed to the killing, there are still those - Richmond among them - who believe that Beth's stepfather, vicar Peter Denshaw, was actually responsible for her death. As Richmond's investigation of the biographer's death has him rummaging once again through the Denshaw family's dirty laundry, he cannot help but begin to see clues to the older murder as well.

Beyond the Veil (Penumbra/D20) ReviewYet again it seems Monte Cook has no idea what power levels he is writing his modules for. This is the second one I purchased written by him and it claims to be designed for 9th level characters. Well I and my fellow players didnt think so. Well maybe if you consider loosing half the party without any real ability to respond to be a good challenge then this might be for you. On the third attempt at the meat of the module we finally stumled across a "loop-hole" that would allow us to claim victory. The story premise is good however.Beyond the Veil (Penumbra/D20) OverviewStories about dragons rampaging across the countryside are almost always false. The creatures are just too intelligent, too crafty, and too strategy-minded to "rampage." Rampaging brings the wrath of oath-bound knights, powerful mages, and divinely-protected priests. Why would a dragon want such attention, unless it had some special secret, or unless it was insane?Or both. The northern reaches of the Derideth Swamp were once plagued by a rampaging dragon. This black dragon, named Storamere, took a mad glee in attacking human villages, wiping out orc camps, driving off the lizardfolk, and decimating farmland. He met his untimely end, though, in an ambush devised by the monks of the Order of St. Chausle. Storamere died with a curse upon his draconic tongue: "you could not have defeated me in my lair," he told his slayers. "I am forever invincible in my lair."Now Storamere is back, with a horde of his misshapen half-dragon offspring, to have his vengeance. All that remains of the once-heroic monks are two old men driven mad by their last encounter with the black dragon, so it falls to a band of adventurers to again defeat the mighty dragon -- this time in his palace, where the boastful Storamere claims he is at his strongest.Beyond the Veil is a D20 System adventure designed for characters of 9th level and up. It includes:* Stats for the deviant Storamere's half-dragon progeny, including a monstrous stone giant, umber hulk, giant constrictor, manticore, carrion crawlers, and dark elves, all with dragon parentage.* New D20 rules for dragon bloodspawn -- those creatures with a quarter dragon blood in their heritage -- and stats for a bloodspawn vampire.* Maps and damage rules for navigating Storamere's lair, a semi-solid palace made of a dangerous, corrosive liquid five feet thick and located in another plane.

Biology of the Mammary Gland (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology) Review"this book represents one of the best of its kind. Each chapter represents an excellent point of well-referenced initial contact to the increasing number of funded investigators interested in the biology of the mammary gland."- TRENDS in Endocriniology, Metabolism 12:8Biology of the Mammary Gland (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology) OverviewProceedings of the European Cooperation in the Field ofScientific and Technical Research (COST 825) Symposium on MammaryGland Biology, held September 16-18, 1999, in Tours, France. It is difficult to overstate the evolutionary and functionalsignificance of mammary tissue in biology. Substantial progress hasbeen made by researchers in various disciplines, particularly over thelast fifteen years, towards realizing the potential of this tissue toyield powerful experimental models for morphogenesis and tissuedevelopment; for cellular differentiation; for the biosynthesis andsecretion of proteins, lipids, small molecules and inorganic salts;and for the coordination and regulation of these processes. Morerecently, the possibility of exploiting the secretory epithelial cellsof mammary tissue as `cell factories' has become a reality and therecombinant production by lactating animals of an increasing number ofproteins, valuable both in the pharmaceutical and `nutraceutical'fields, is in progress or under development. Also in this sphere of agricultural production, genetic as well asnutritional technologies are under investigation and exploitation tooptimize milk composition for various end-uses - for instancein food process and manufacture. The possibilities of deriving healthbenefit from the bioactive properties of some of the minorconstituents of milk are emerging to counter the highly-publicizednegative health impact of excessive consumption of saturated animalfats. In human nutrition and medicine, the mammary gland is both asource of nutrition to the neonate and a potential health threat tothe adult female - breast cancer remains the major single causeof female mortality in most developed countries. This volume provides a unique glimpse into our understanding, at thecutting edge of a variety of disciplines, of this versatile andextraordinary tissue, at the birth of the twenty-first century.

The Soul of Lichien ReviewThe Soul Of Lichien is the fascinating sequel to T.S. Clayton's Heart Of Lichien. We are taken back to the Senovia universe for a suspenseful journey with Shailen, Kellen, Dalzere and Sasheer. T.S. Clayton's characters are complex and well developed - strong and charismatic men and women trapped in a web of intrigue and danger.
I found myself lost in the pages as chapter after chapter was unveiled, drawing me in until the climatic ending. I am anxiously looking forward to the next book in this exciting series. The Soul of Lichien OverviewSennovia - A new prophecy uttered from the dead lips of a Seer starts Shailen on a journey into the unknown. What should be a routine mission becomes shrouded in secrecy, as he finds himself thrust into the middle of a deadly mystery. He discovers the hard way that his mixed heritage is the least of his problems as he is offered a choice.A simple choice that could change the course of history. With Sasheer, he ventures into the darkness of the past and discovers that there is a power even more insidious, and dangerous, than all the shattered fragments of Lichien´s divided soul.

The Last Incarnation ReviewI really liked how the idea of reincarnation was combined with a fantasy story in this book. Of course there are elves, fairies, Gods, and shape changers in typical fantasy style, but the story tying all this together is better than the usual read. I'd highly recommend this book! The Last Incarnation OverviewRaised by Elves, befriended by animals, entrusted with magic, Barr was ayoung man on a journey that's taken many, many lifetimes. The Chronicles of Illumaril: The Advent of Darkness ReviewMy name is Basil "Jim" Varian, and I co-authored this book. Having invested a good portion of my creative juices in working with my dear friend Gary in writing this tale, I feel I'm perfect for spouting its praises and criticizing its pitfalls.
The story is our first attempt at a published work and is a little rough with some long and dry scenes (due to poor copy editing). However, there is more than enough action to pull the story along. The plot is rich and the characters are well thought out with much history (the story is based on a D&D fantasy campaign Gary and I had run in the late '70s).
Buy this book, it's well worth the look.

The Fair Folk of Doon Hill ReviewAs a Scot abroad I was excited to read this book. I was not disappointed. Although intended for a juvenile audience I,as an adult, thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of the Fairy Folk. This is a book which will appeal to the intelligence of a younger audience. These Fair Folk are believable and you quickly become invested in both the characters and the story.Home seemed a lot closer while I was reading this book. The Fair Folk of Doon Hill OverviewDeep in the heart of the Trossachs countryside, in Scotland, lies the village of Aberfoyle. To the south east of the village is a hill called Doon Hill. Legend has it that this is the home of the Sidhe (pronounced shee), or Faery Folk. It is said that in 1692, the minister of the parish, Reverend Robert Kirk, was spirited away by the Faery Folk as a punishment for revealing their secrets. Meet Hamish, his granny and other characters inside this book. They are gnomes, guardians of the oak trees. Their homeland; the woody knoll called Doon Hill. Their duty; to take care of sick animals and to protect the oak woodlands. Their biggest enemy; owls! Their greatest delight; to sing and dance celebrating the forest gods. Their biggest hate; humans who call them faeries, blame them for troubles and show them no respect.

Seer's Quest: Book One of the Divine Gambit Trilogy ReviewWhile I enjoy the story line the unbelievable lack of proof reading of this book and the next book will probably keep me from buying book three in the series. On seemingly every page I found run-on sentences, incorrect punctuation, or extra words. It becomes very distracting and I've found myself searching for the next screw up instead of trying to enjoy the story. I don't know if Mr. Corrie is proofing his own books or what but whoever is should be fired.Seer's Quest: Book One of the Divine Gambit Trilogy OverviewSeer's Quest is the first book in a fantasy action-adventure trilogy, set in the world of Traldorentm. A diverse group of mercenaries are brought together to retrieve information that has been lost for thousands of years. They discover what they have been paid to do might not be so simple and straightforward as they first thought. Unwittingly, they are led on the quest with many twists, turns, and subplots. Just what the divine gambit is about, why these mercenaries have become part of it, and who really understands its full implications is obscured until it is gradually revealed in the next volumes in this trilogy.

Kady of Quid ReviewOriginally posted at [...]:
Kady wasn't like the other girls her age. She saw things other teenagers and adults didn't see.
Kady's mother died when she was eight. She lives on the edge of a forest with her father and her obnoxious older brother Lukus. Palmer lives in the woods and teaches Kady things not taught in school. How to do fight and defend herself, things he says will help her when she comes into her own - whatever that means.
Drawn into the world of Tirn Aill where magic seems to prevail, Kady is astonished to find she is thought to be the Guardian everyone is waiting for. Unfortunately some are glad to see her arrive at last, others are out to destroy her before she can come into her true power.
Kady, her friend Terry and dog Barlow must find and fight their way to Quid the seat of the Guardian's power. Unknown to Kady her father, Palmer and a leprechaun called Garlic are following behind, trying to catch up and help. Overshadowing everyone's efforts is Gremig an exiled Diaone Shee elf who wants Kady's powers for his own. The only ones who can stop him are Kady or the dragon Horcano. But Horcano disappeared many years ago.
Although different from the usual teenager, Kady still has the usual likes, dislikes and feelings that any normal girl of her age has. The fact that she can see creatures from Tirn Aill in her own land seems perfectly normal to her. Palmer instructs her in how to defend herself from these creatures and which ones can be trusted.
This is a very modern fairy tale. Although there are elves, dwarves and giants in the story, they fit in perfectly with Kady's quest. This is not a soft floaty type of story, it's a true quest for truth and freedom. Although Kady is the main character, all the other creatures and humans in the book need to be there to help and assist Kady through her problems. Each comes into their own strengths as the story progresses.
Kady gains confidence as she makes her way through Tirn Aill. Although at times exhausted and afraid, she knows she must confront Gremig and defeat him. If she fails not only will Tirn Aill fall, but also Tire Nam Beo - the name given to Earth by the people of Tirn Aill.
Her major problem is if she defends the people against Gremig, she could also lose all she holds dear in the world she grew up in.
This book is an amazing tale of a young teenage girl interacting with another world. What at first seems to be the usual story of goblins, elves and the like turns out to be a quest to save two worlds. I would recommend it to any reader over the age of twelve as a book they will thoroughly enjoy.Kady of Quid Overview"Don't tell me faeries, elves and dragons don't exist," 5-year old Kady insisted again and again to her parents, Rachel and Richard Dowd. And Kady's parents know she is right. As the years pass, they see the small creature darting beneath the dryer. They also see the giant's shadow outside the windows. And Rachel Dowd has found something even more frightening than glowing eyes from deep within the shrubs. She's found a letter, one that may involve her daughter. Could the letter folded in her coat pocket be true? If so, Kady must fulfill a destiny far beyond anyone's wildest imagination. Does shedare? Now, 15-year old Kady must decide. Stay safe at home, in Maine or go? Go to a place told of only in faerie tales. A place filled with spriggans and phookas, dwarves and dragons. In Quid, Kady learns to believe in herself, in the courage of others and the acceptance of those unlike herself.A portion of the royalties from this book will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network.

Where the Forest Meets the Sea ReviewI will preface this by saying that I am likely a tad biased, since I got to see the creative process behind this novel. However, I can whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone who loves a good quest adventure set in an original and beautifully imagined fantasy world. If you love wizards, elves, knights, and strong, spirited ladies all rolled up in a rousing heroic quest with a touch of romance thrown in, give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.
(This is the second book in the series, and would be enriched by reading Crystal Rain, however, it is not necessary, as the author fills in enough details that you will not be lost.)Where the Forest Meets the Sea OverviewTen years have passed since civil war tore the Northern kingdom apart. Though peace has been declared, it is a fragile thing and new currents threaten to sunder bonds of blood and friendship. When Duke mac Cuill is taken by Southern runners, his friends must find and free him before poisoned whispers destroy the elven alliance forever. The elven scout, Gwendyrion, searches for his friend but fights a silent war of his own against the whispers of the sea that threaten his sanity. The sprite, Deirdre, goes with him, promising her help in his endeavor. Giles, newly trained wizard and ward of Duke mac Cuill, heads south by land, determined to save the only person he calls family. But his magic has taken on a life of its own.Neither can walk away but saving their friend may ultimately destroy them both.

I for one am hooked and cannot wait to read more from this talented author!Anaxiunara: Mother Of Dragons OverviewAnaxiunara seeks a place to bear her eggs. Anatomy & Development of the Grand Prix Motorcycle ReviewThis book contains the only cut-away illustration of the famous Moto Guzzi V8 that I've ever seen. I was also impressed with the amout of historic photos used to show the progress and path of GP motocycle development. The only area I felt the book was lacking was current development. Very little current technology, other than Honda's big-bang engine were mentioned. All in all though, the book is well worth the reading.Anatomy & Development of the Grand Prix Motorcycle Overview

Goblin Tales: Collection of Short Stories from the World of Fantasy ReviewGoblin Tales is a delightful and imaginative collection of stories that encourages traditional values in a fantasy setting. There are twelve of them, and one hopes that more are forthcoming. Wonderful reading for all ages.Goblin Tales: Collection of Short Stories from the World of Fantasy OverviewMortimer is late, and it is nothing new. Not even the most sympathetic soul ever credited this dwarf for being on time for anything. But Mortimer is about to learn a valuable life lesson as he shows up tardy for his passage into adulthood.
In his collection of twelve intricate-and occasionally provocative-short tales discovered in a hollowed-out tree by goblin scholars in their sacred groves, David Kier emphasizes such infallible character traits as honor, integrity, honesty, work ethic, diligence, respect, and individual responsibility. From Cedric the goblin, who has failed at watching over the younger goblins deep in the sparkling forest, to Cleotaxes, a winged horse who learns from a master sorcerer that she must not only deliver an important message but must also carry a man-child on her back for the first time while carrying out her mission, Kier brings to life an incredible fantasy land filled with gnomes, gods, dragons, and great adventures.
These treasured tales set inside a dark forest will entertain a wide audience-from teens to graybeards-while sharing important messages that will lead to a greater understanding of our own civilization.

Marla ReviewI was pleasantly surprised. This book is listed in adult erotic, yet it has a story! It's not a page turner sex scene(but has enough to make it spicey), and after I got into the concept that elves and fairies might somehow still be amongst us in a hidden magical world I really enjoyed it. The dragon was particularly nasty. I thought I predicted the ending, yet was surprised at how it happened. I hope Phillip Sweeny writes another.Marla OverviewMarla, a beautiful fairy-like creature of great magic, must find and mate with the lost Elf King living among humans in order to fulfill an ancient prophecy and erase the cruel fate which has befallen her.

Travis Taylor and the Dragon Quest ReviewBought this book for one of my grandchildren. I will always read first any book I give to them. It is a good story, suitable for the young reader; well written and interesting. It appears to be part of a continuing story of which there will be subsequent books to add to the collection.Travis Taylor and the Dragon Quest OverviewThere is nothing extraordinary about Travis Taylor, a thirteen-year-old who has a knack for telling a good adventure story. But Travis' ordinary life is about to change forever when he and his two best friends, Abigail and Joshua, witness a peculiar looking bird that hovers above them and then quickly disappears into thin air-right before their very eyes.
Just when Travis starts to believe that what he saw was just his imagination, the orange and red feathered bird reappears, eventually drawing him to a large portal that suddenly opens in front of him, revealing a seven-foot horseman wearing a suit of armor. When the bird unexpectedly digs his claws into Travis' back and carries him into the portal, it seems that Travis is lost forever. Led by his enigmatic protector Raven Phoenix, a brave elf named Syd, and a spirited pixie named Labyrinth, Travis embarks on a quest to find his way back home, only to discover the magic world he has entered holds many secrets from his past.
Join Travis as he embarks on an adventure filled with knights, a princess in distress, a tyrant emperor, an evil sorceress, and of course, a mighty dragon!

Christmas Crooks of Rainbow Road (Volume 7) ReviewGrowing up in the Fifties, it was Superman (and Supergirl) with their magical powers of strength that could best the evildoers and save the world for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way;" twenty years later, my older children hero worshiped Steve Austin the Bionic Man (and the girls all wanted to be Jamie, the Bionic Woman); and by the Eighties, my younger daughters would get up at the crack of dawn to see the latest episode of Power Rangers. All were fantasy heroes dedicated to fighting evil, championing the underdog, and ensuring justice for the victims of crime. Today's children have a new series of books which teach moral values through super-powered characters...this time using children of their own age.
Robert Thornhill was intrigued when his grandson wrote a book as a second grade year-end assignment. Blake told a story about two children who meet a leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Building on Blake's idea, Robert fine-tuned the story in Super Secrets of Rainbow Road, the first of a series of books based on this theme. This was followed by Super Powers of Rainbow Road, Hawaiian Rainbows, Patriotic Rainbows, Sports Heroes of Rainbow Road and Ghosts and Goblins of Rainbow Road.
Book 7, Christmas Crooks of Rainbow Road, like Book 6, centers around a holiday...this time Christmas. Blake, and his younger sister, Breonna (the real grandchildren of Thornhill), have been taken on a family vacation to Florida for the holidays. Besides being worried if Santa will deliver to a condo on the beach, the children wonder if the rainbows in Florida would be different than the ones that are in their hometown near Kansas City, MO.When a storm occurs the children are quick to see if the Rainbow Road, a multi-colored twisty-curvy stream like a waterslide ride, found at the end of the rainbow, is the same. They find it looks the same and hop on to ride to the green bed of Lucky Leprechaun, the keeper of the Pot of Gold. These gold coins are not for money...they empower the recipient of the coin to have a special ability to do super-power things!
This time Lucky has a special task for the children as they discover that they are on their way to the North Pole to help Santa capture crooks who want to steal all the presents for the world's children for themselves. Blake is given the power to become a Shape Shifter (he can change into anyone or anything) and uses this with his powers of X-ray Vision, Strength and Invincibility and with Breonna's powers of Super Hearing, Truth and Invisibility. They also discover that elves are related to leprechauns! Who knew?!
Blake and Breonna are not perfect children, but they want to be good, as do most real children. The lessons they are learning from their parents, along with the lessons learned by using Lucky's gold coins, are gently taught to the reader in an environment that is fanciful and exciting. The illustrations are in Black & White, which allows the more creative child to color them as s/he imagines they should look. This is a nice touch that draws children even closer into the stories and lets them take pride of ownership in the book.
These would make great gifts as one volume, or a set, for children in the primary grades who can begin to read the stories to themselves and younger siblings. They do follow a chronological order as each new book builds on the one before, so those who buy might want to start with Book 1 and work their way forward. Looks like the new generation has a new set of heroes!
Christmas Crooks of Rainbow Road (Volume 7) OverviewIt's Christmas Eve --- on Blake and Breonna's 7th trip to Rainbow Road, they find themselves at the North Pole.Lucky Leprechaun gives Blake the gold coin for Shape-Shifting --- but--- two crooks pick the coin from Blake's pocket and use it to steal all the presents from Santa's Workshop. Can Blake and Breonna use all their Super Powers to fool the thieves, discover the real Santa and save Christmas for the world?
