Elmer the Christmas Elf ReviewIn the opening remarks, the author describes a situation where she was to read "The Night Before Christmas" to an audience at a nursing home. Stage fright cleared her memory to the point where she could not perform, so her goal in writing this story was to create a story that would be easy to recite. The theme is of course Christmas, but the author didn't quite reach her desired level.
Elmer is an elf dedicated to making Santa's job easy and children around the world happy. Extremely hard working and cheerful, his day is spent hammering, sawing and doing all the tasks needed to create millions of toys. On Christmas Eve, the sleigh is loaded and Santa departs, but suddenly Elmer realizes that a toy has fallen out. Crestfallen at the thought of a disappointed child, he ponders what to do and he prays in the hope that he can contact Santa and give him the bad news. Elmer's effort is rewarded when Santa comes flying back with a boy possessing saucer eyes. Although the boy did not get a gift, his opportunity to tour the workshop was the best gift of all and he has opened his eyes as wide as possible in order to capture it all.
This is a nice Christmas tale but it is not easy to recite. The flow is somewhat choppy and would not be that easy for children to read or hear. Therefore, while this book is a success in the area of being a Christmas story, it does not meet the authors stated goals.
Elmer the Christmas Elf OverviewA charming story about Christmas with a brand new theme. This book is done in a poetry format for children up to 8 years old. It is a story about how one child would have been left out at Christmas had it not been for a little divine intervention and some quick thinking by Santa to rescue the day.
