Little Elephant Review"Get up, Little Elephant. This is your birthday! You are four years old." These are some of the first lines spoken in one of my childhood favorites, a Junior Elf picture book about a very special birthday. Little Elephant is woken by his mother, who informs him that it is his birthday and that they will be going on a birthday walk to see their friends. At the end of the walk, she promises, there will be a wonderful surprise. So Little Elephant and his mother set off, stopping to say hello to a giraffe, a hippopotamus, and a monkey. They all wish him a happy birthday, and the monkey gives him a banana. Finally, Little Elephant and his mother walk up a steep hill, and when they reach the top, he sees his surprise. There are five other small elephants playing Follow the Leader, and Mother Elephant tells him that he is now old enough to learn to play with them. Little Elephant and his new friends play games and slide down a mossy slope into the river. He enjoys himself immensely and tells his mother that birthdays are fun and that he likes them. The final lines convey Mother Elephant's response: "That's good. You will have one every year for the rest of your life." Although long out of print, this is a sweet story with adorable illustrations that would be a nice addition to any child's library. The warm, nurturing relationship between Little Elephant and his mother is reassuring, and the excitement and wonder of celebrating a birthday will hold special appeal for small children.Little Elephant Overview
