Eyes of a Monster ReviewEyes of a Monster is a well written and captivating examination of a cold blooded murder, the victim, the oddly different perpetrators, and the justice that follows. Ms. Homan entered the story believing in the innocence of the defendants. She helped one of them, Richard Laird, get an appeal and only afterward came to realize that she'd helped a "monster" possibly get a second chance to hate and kill again.
She could have simply withdrawn and tried to ignore what she'd done but decided that she had a responsibility to stay involved with the hope that her mistake would be corrected even within an imperfect judicial system.
There are five distinct aspects to "Eyes..", and Ms. Homan manages to blend them perfectly:
1) The tale of her own involvement stemming from her belief in a fair trial system, and of the difficulties and abuse she met along the way.
2) A painting of the social and economic setting of the mixed-suburban Pennsylvania area and culture where the crime was centered.
3) The bloody story of the murder itself and its immediate aftermath and attempts at coverup.
4) The examination of the main characters: the victim (Anthony Milano), the accused (Frank Chester and Richard Laird), the families, the police, and the lawyers.
5) The story of how the justice system worked in gathering evidence, building a case, and eventually reaching a final verdict.
I would highly recommend this book for any fan of the True Crime genre or for anyone concerned about hate crimes and the working of the judicial system in capital cases. The author is not just a writer who tells true crime stories, but an active participant in one particular true crime story that she recreates clearly and chillingly.
Eyes of a Monster OverviewEyes of a Monster is the true story of a grisly murder that had shaken southeastern Pennsylvania's Bristol Township to its core on December 15th, 1987. Twenty-six year old Anthony Milano of Levittown was brutally slashed to death because he was suspected of being gay. Two men, Richard Laird and Frank Chester, were arrested and convicted and sentenced to death for his murder five months later. Richard Laird won a new trial after sitting on death row for nineteen years. Eyes of a Monster explores what happens when the justice system goes wrong, when classism pollutes jurisprudence, where that leaves all parties involved, and how families are torn apart as a result.
