A Killing Among the Dead ReviewI have read this author's other three books The City of Refuge, Pharaoh's Son, The Safeguard: A Novel of Georgia in 1864, and was happy to see this one previously unpublished. It takes place in the 20th dynasty of ancient Egypt, when the Ramesside pharaohs' power was waning. The story is based on a scandal involving a rash of tomb robbings that occurred around that time, but while the author has done a lot of research, this is a work of fiction and imagination. The mystery has an unexpected twist, and there are two moments of grace that are very satisfying. I was sorry to finish it, and will read it again.
I especially enjoyed the character of the hero, Wenatef. He is a common man in an uncommon situation who rises to the occasion and triumphs at a great personal cost. I would love to read more about him. The author's writing style is descriptive and even lyrical in places. There is one scene where the hero, sitting on a hilltop and looking down at the Nile, flowing silver in the starlight, that is beautiful.
