Harbingers of Mortality ReviewSteve Thomas hits a home run with this book. In only a few pages, the reader is thrust into the action, and it doesn't slow down. We're presented with a world with no heroes and few good people. The resolution of the central problem is, like real world problems, messy. Steve clearly understands how to combine Fantasy with the kind of tropes one would expect of more contemporary fiction, not a combination I've often been exposed to.
Also, something that has always bugged me about fantasy, his world runs on rules of physics! Isn't that great? I mean, there may be magic, but it's not some vague new-agey artsy-fartsy idea. There are clearly explained rules that govern its use, so that addressed one of my other misgivings with conventional fantasy.
Which isn't to say that if you like conventional fantasy, you won't like it. You certainly will. It's a good novel through and through. It simply brightens my spirits to have such a well written, unconventional book in this genre.
