The Rhymer and the Ravens: The Book of Fate ReviewI would not have even listed "historical fantasy" as a genre I enjoyed before reading this book. But once I began reading "The Rhymer and the Ravens", it went everywhere with me. Any chance I got, I hoped to get a page or two in, even if it was while waiting for the light to change! This rich story of a hero, Tomas the Rhymer, on a difficult quest while searching for the meaning of life, love, and service to others is full of finely drawn charcters. I found myself truly caring for and "knowing" characters such as the wise old woman Aud, the beautiful Elf queen Moira, the magical Pooka Aubrey, and the story's hero. This book has been loved by each person to whom I have given it as a gift, several of whom had seen the TV special "Merlin" and found themselves wanting more such adventure. Each has had the same reaction: "I can't put it down!" The only reason I could stand to finish it at all was because I knew there was a sequel!The Rhymer and the Ravens: The Book of Fate OverviewWhat would you do if you suddenly became both infinitely psychic and unable to tell even the smallest lie? 1. you love historical romance.
2. you love lots of sex.
3. you love the ton era via england.
4. you love books about the fae / ooops meant elves.
5. many detailed desciptions of clothing.
6. if you dont mind the romantic leads equating great sex for love... they dont do a lot of talking in this one.
you will not love this book if....
1. you love urban fantasy.
2. love men to act like men and like women to act like strong equals.
3. love lots of world building. ok... the various desciptions of powers were there but their was no true understanding of how they did anything.
4. slow build up of romance with meaningful sex between characters with chemistry. a quick description of eyes and hair with loads of desciption of clothes does not make someone hot just because everyone around them says so.

Mirkwood: A Novel About JRR Tolkien, Heroines, and Exodus From Middle Earth Or Pardon Me, Did You Just Come Through That Portal Review*
This book misrepresents itself in both title and contents. For one thing, it is demonstrably not "a novel about JRR Tolkien". While there is a (comparatively minor) character with that name, this character thinks, speaks and acts so unlike Tolkien that Hillard should have given him an entirely different name. But doing so would ruin his project, which is to propose a revisionist plot for The Lord of the Rings, whereby a previously unknown hobbitess (with the unlikely and thoroughly unlikeable name of Aragranessa) was in fact the true hero of the story all along, edited out by misogynistic chroniclers. Not only is she Frodo's otherwise unknown lover, but she also discovers the long-lost Entwives and it's *she* who really defeats Sauron. Honestly, the actual subtitle of this book should have been "The Adventures of Mary Sue in Middle-earth".
So, in addition to presenting a "Tolkien" who is nothing at all like the real JRR Tolkien, we have a wholesale rewriting of Tolkien's epic, complete with (clumsy new additions aside) substantially the same characters, setting and plot. It shouldn't therefore require too much empathy to understand the Tolkien Estate's objections to this book. Readers with some respect for the literary legacy of a cherished author will give "Mirkwood" a miss for these reasons alone.
