I was a big Eragon fan when I was given this book(before the movie came out and completely destroyed the storyline) and I was very exited to get it for Christmas. I was startled when I opened the book and found out that the introduction was just an argument about why faeries must exist in the real world. This feeling quickly changed to disappointment as I found that the book's main goal was to show how Eragon's magic didn't match with how the person writing the guide sees it is in their version of reality. Deathstalker Coda ReviewDeathstalkers are legends in the universe they inhabit and Greeen should be a legend of Sci-fi. He has managed to end a series in a way that is both satisfying and fitting, one of the things many authors simply cannot seem to do. OK, there could be more, but this is definitely a great book, tying together more in its few pages than we fans have a right to expect.
No spoiler here, just a recommendation that if you have read and enjoyed any of the other DS books, you need to read the rest!!

The Iron Tower Omnibus (Mithgar) ReviewFirst I must say that most of the other 1-star reviews have detailed this trilogy's manifest faults awfully well - there's not a lot for me to add. I have to say that I'm in agreement with all of the negatives, to wit:
Tolkien plagiarism - well, duh. This makes the "Sword of Shannara" look like a masterpiece of originality in comparison. The very beginning, with the "young buccan Warrows" (McKiernan's strength sure isn't in his naming) practicing their archery, is just about the only scene that doesn't seem like a LOTR swipe. OK, the warrows are a little more warlike than the hobbits. So what? They also have a piece in the appendix called "On Warrows" - they're quite short - they tend to stoutness - they live in a peaceful country all their own and like to avoid the big folks - there's a town on the verge of their country called Stonehill (Bree) populated by men and Warrows, with an inkeeper named Bockleman (Barliman Butterbur) - four of them take part in most of the action of the book, with one Tuck (Frodo) being eventually responsible for the downfall of the bad guy Modru (Sauron) and his boss Gryphon (Morgoth). You get the idea.
But I guess one can plagiarise pretty baldly and get away with it. I don't think McKiernan got sued - if he did, he must have settled quietly - his books are still out there. So let's let go of that. If he's writing a copy, well, how does he write it? Not well at all I'm afraid. His heroes and villains are all paper-thin - Modru comes off as a James Bond villain at best, cackling about his plans to his helpless female prisoner and hissing a lot, and he's evil because....uh...he's evil. The heroes have no personalities either, and most of them cry a lot. There's no sense of landscape, of culture, of history, it all just feels tacked together, all makeshift and cheap, all no more detailed or interesting than the average AD&D game I was playing in college around the time this was first published. Others have mentioned how McKiernan flips back and forth between "quarrels" and "arrows" (it should be the latter in most cases) indiscriminately, but his writing is remarkably lazy and poor throughout. He uses the passive voice an awful lot and throws in archaisms and umlauts and accents recklessly, I guess to make it feel "old" and "epic", but he only succeeds in making himself look illiterate and pretentious. He also has one very curious trait that I've never seen anywhere before - he likes to abbreviate words that are not normally ever abbreviated, e.g. "landscape" becomes " 'scape". This choice and several other equally mysterious ones like using an apostrophe before non-abbreviated words ('Day) help contribute to the general sense that the guy never wrote so much as a letter between college and the writing of this book - and his editors didn't do him any favors.
And he's awfully, awfully obvious. When Tuck finds the Red Quarrel early on, we're never in the slightest doubt that he'll be using it to complete the Big Task and destroy the Big Nasty; when the heroes go underground in Dimmen-whatever (Moria) we know they'll have to face the Balrog-thing; when the eclipse is first mentioned there's never a shred of doubt that they'll have to reach the Big Bad Iron Tower before it. And so on. This is a book almost wholly without subtext, except maybe a very cynical one: how badly can a book be written, and how obvious can it's debt to LOTR be, and yet still be published - and even cherished by fantasy fans with little taste or experience. The answer saddens me.

Shadowrun Book #1: Born to Run Reviewi'm not exactly sure why they restarted this series, number-wise that is. perhaps to introduce new characters like kellan,lothan, silver max and the like. i am only four or five books short of reading (for the second time in some cases) the entire first run of the shadowrun series. it's tight as far as continuity goes, it makes reference to the "night of rage" and goblinization and other historical events in the shadowrun history. stephen kenson "keeps it real" in the true SR fashion. this book is accessible to all fans, new and old. this books does a good job explaining SR lingo,lifestyle and metatypes in an interesting manner, exciting to the new reader, but yet not redundant to the experienced SR reader. kenson does it again!! up there with charette !!! buy it !!Shadowrun Book #1: Born to Run OverviewEarth, 2063. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Core Set ReviewI'm a fan of the Warhammer universe and though I own the 2nd edition of WHFRP, I haven't played it much. My mainstay game lately is D&D 4E, though I've played or run most of the major RPG systems from the last two decades.
I find WHFRP 3rd edition to be a splendid mix of some of my favorite aspects from other RPGs combined with a few new mechanics and unique game concepts. This game pushes the bar up for quality and design thinking and I hope it influences future RPGs.
I know the MSRP is a little high, but at Amazon prices, this is a steal! This box is HUGE and beautiful. Of course everything inside is high quality material and full color, as you'd expect from a company like Fantasy-Flight. The books are not hardcover, but they are full color with thick, glossy pages.
Certainly the books could have used another run at editing, there are lots of typos, but none so far that make the rules confusing. That's the only quality issue I've noticed so far.
The rules are simple but powerful. They offer a wealth of options for players and plenty of flexibility for the GM. I feel the rules sit somewhere between Savage Worlds and D&D 4E in complexity. The core of the rules is easy to remember: you create dice pools and roll them to determine results, the specifics and exceptions are noted on cards in front of the players. You rarely reference the books during play. Cards are used to great effect throughout the system.
Though there's a boardgame feel to the components, this is very much a true RPG. It's a nice mix between the freedom and danger offered in older RPGs and the tactical options and balance that a system like D&D 4e presents.
The system and components are tightly integrated. Everything fits together really well. The feel of the Warhammer world is definitely stitched into the rules but the GM can easily run any type of campaign he wants, not just dark and dangerous. There's plenty of room to take the system and suit it to your group's style of play.
For those of you who dislike grid combat, you're in luck. For those prefer D&D 4E style combat, it's not difficult to adjust the rules to accomodate a grid.
There's very little math involved in the game. You're not constantly rolling numbers and adding modifiers and comparing to other numbers. This is all accounted for in the construction of dice pools. The options players and GMs have in building dice pools really make the system shine.
I could say so much more. I could go on about the party system, the stance system, the way the game supports narrative play, or how fast it plays, but I'll stop here. The game does a much better job of explaining itself, and you owe it to yourself to at least check it out at your FLGS if you're on the fence.

The Annotated legends (Dragonlance Legends) ReviewThe Legends Trilogy definitely deserves a 5-star rating. I rate this edition as 3-star strictly because of the annotations.
Legends follows up the great Chronicles trilogy, with Raistlin, Caramon, and Tas embarking on a time-traveling adventure with enormous consequences for the entire world of Krynn. The story takes on a much more personal feeling in Legends, with the focus being narrowed to a few key characters and the plot seemingly less epic than the previous trilogy (even though the events have a larger potential impact on the world). This trilogy also has a darker and more serious feel, with much more emotional clarity and desperate circumstances. The characters are forced to make difficult sacrifices and each seems to fight their own form of depression.
The main premise focuses on Raistlin's efforts to become the most powerful mage of all time and challenge the gods themselves. Caramon and Crysiana fight their own personal battles to discover themselves and achieve peace with the world. Tas basically tags along in innocent curiosity and a desire to help his friends.
The annotations of this version add nothing to the story. I was hoping for interesting insights from the authors telling about their views of what the various characters are thinking or what really happened in alluded to events. Instead you get a whole bunch of repetitive and obvious commentary along with self-important glorifications of the authors' talent and foresight. This was my fourth journey through the Legends trilogy and it was by far the least enjoyable due to the distracting influence of pointless annotations. You would think that you'd be able to just ignore the commentary, but its impossible as you keep telling yourself that there must be at least a little useful information only to be disappointed time and again.
While the Legends trilogy is awesome, pick a different version than this one to enjoy.The Annotated legends (Dragonlance Legends) OverviewAn all-new, fully annotated version of a classic Weis & Hickman trilogy.This annotated version of Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins contains extensive notes from New York Times best-selling authors Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, as well as commentary from the original members of the Dragonlance setting conceptual team. The Crimson Shadow ReviewBefore I picked up this trilogy, I had heard whispers of Luthien and his halfling companion Oliver DeBurrows. Then I actually read the trilogy. I was surprised. Salvatore is well known for great characters, and in this trilogy he doesn't dissapoint, especially with Oliver (who he actually roleplayed for along time) The only character I wasn't too fond of was the half-elf, but she grew on me. The story itself was good as well, though at parts it did seem kind of rushed. The Legacy (Forgotten Realms: Legacy of the Drow, Book 1) ReviewThis will be short - basically; Salvatore has always written some really great books - especially about the main character in most of his TSR books, Drizzt Do'Urden, but this is definitely one of his best. The Dark Elf Trilogy is great, as is the Icewindale Trilogy, but this book marks the beginning of then end (until later this year, thank goodness when he publishes a few more books about Drizzt), and has to be rated as one of his best. His first hardback, and definitely up there with one of the best Fantasy novels of all time. Salvatore at this point has matured so much in his writing about Drizzt Do'Urden that he's able to give so much more insight into the character but without having read the six books about Drizzt preceding this one, the reader may not fully understand how important the book is. The Legacy takes Drizzt back to his homeland where he has to question his people once again - it shows that he cannot escape their vile world no matter how far he runs from them. Menzoberranzen will always haunt him and his family is seeking revenge on him for getting them out of favor with Lloth. Drizzt takes it upon hmself to travel into the Underdark and solve all of his own problems. A plot that could only be awesome the way Salvatore writes it. And if you've read Homeland, Exile, and Sourjourn, then you can really appreciate his dilemma.Basically, this is far and away one of Salvatore's greatest books and holds a special place in all Salvatore fans because it was his first published hardback and a great bestseller.The Legacy (Forgotten Realms: Legacy of the Drow, Book 1) OverviewLife is good for Drizzt Do'Urden, better than it ever has been for the beleaguered dark elf. His dearest friend, the dwarf Bruenor, has reclaimed his throne, and his adventuring companions, Wulfgar and Catti-brie, are to be wed in the spring. Even the halfling Regis has returned. All the friends are united in the safety and prosperity of Mithril Hall, where streams of silver mithril run deep and dwarven hammers bang out the solemn rhythms of ancient and unending songs.But Drizzt did not achieve this state of peace without leaving powerful enemies in his wake. Lloth, the dreaded Spider Queen deity of the evil dark elves, counts herself among them and has vowed to end the drow's days of pleasant security.

Prospero Lost: Prospero's Daughter, Book I ReviewThe cover is certainly very snazzy, but it's a bit misleading: it implies a kind of evocative, lush-language'd Dunsany-esque sort of story. The which this isn't: if fantasy had space operas, that's what it'd be. Which doesn't mean there aren't moments of magical beauty--there are--but they're the leaven (and the story rises higher for them), not the meat.
Imagine that Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, was actually one of his histories--a secret history ruthlessly suppressed by the Dan-Brownian Orbis Humanis society. Imagine that Miranda's story didn't end with her marriage to Ferdinand, but began when her magician father bound her in service to the goddess Euronyme to gain immortality for himself and his family; that Prospero didn't destroy his books but transformed them into the tools of power that would grant his children dominion over the powers of the earth.
Now start the story four hundred years later, with a cool and wealthy CEO-magician finding a mysterious message written in secret phoenix-fire letters: "I have woken evil powers! Warn the family! Beware the Shadowed Ones!" This is Miranda Prospero, whose global corporation acts as intermediary between the world of myth, demons, angels, powers and principalities and an unwitting humanity which has for centuries been kept (mostly) safe from them. The corporate jet (for example) is magic-enhanced, which helps (a bit) when the dragon attacks. The adventures begin when the icily virgin Miss Prospero discovers that it's not enough to send one of her airy indentured servants (the Aerie Ones themselves would say "slaves") to investigate her father's possible disappearance--the woken power (or powers) attack her in her home, destroying part of it and stealing a potent weapon. Thus begins her world-spanning quest to find her father, and warn her estranged brothers. Monster island, gates to hell, faery revels--it's all here.
What I enjoyed most about the book was, of course, the secret world--I love how the insane Prospero family's story reveals the magical world underlying our own, and how Lamplighter interweaves both pagan and Christian mythology. In one chapter we have the teind to Hell juxtaposed with Santa Claus--and it works. I love all the supporting cast, especially Miranda's hard-boiled detective Mab, a North wind enfleshed to serve Prospero, Inc, who's lived as bond-servant in the U.S. long enough to have developed some revolutionary ideas about their master-servant relationship. Miranda I like rather less well: but as an immortal young woman, emotionally trapped as the 16-year-old bride abandoned by her fiancé at the altar, sworn to virginity as the price of her powers--and quite possibly bound as terribly as the aerie servants to serve Prospero's whims--she's clearly got a boat-load of maturing to do. Right now I don't think she deserves either of her would-be demon lovers (even if neither one is as he seems)
Fair warning: this is only the first book of a three book series. The good news? Books two and three are already written: they just need to work their way through the editing/publishing process.

Child of a Dead God: A Novel of the Noble Dead ReviewThis is supposedly the last book in the Noble Dead Series. The events in the book take place after Magiere and Leesil rescue Leesil's mother from her imprisonment in the Elven Territories. Disturbed by dreams guiding her to a mysterious castle, Magiere leads Leesil, Wynn, Chap, and their Elven protectors south. Her dreams have told her little else. On their trail is Magiere's half-brother, Welstiel, a vampire desperate to be freed from his bloodlust. For Welstiel, Magiere is the one who can guide him to this artifact.
The action was good and the description of the events was excellent. The ending was open for another adventure of Magiere and Leesil.
If you haven't read the other five books in the series, you will be confused about what is going on since the authors do not go into any real details of what happened in the previous five books. My biggest complaint about this book was that it seemed like every time you turned around there was a reminder that Welstiel was Magiere's half-brother.

For forces more powerful than they are rallying around Magiere, arming her for the conflict to come. Because finding the orb may be just the beginning of the challenges that await her...

Merlin's Dragon: Doomraga's Revenge ReviewI've read (to my son) the Lost Years of Merlin series, the Avalon Series and the first book in this series. I loved the writing as well as the stories.
This book was a huge disappointment. It felt as if it had been rushed and was filled with "I wonder if I'll ever know xxx..." sentences as quick substitute for actually fleshing out the story. None of the richness of the stories in the other series (or even in the first book of this series).
I can't see buying the last book when it comes out - perhaps it's time for Mr. Barron to move on to another topic?Merlin's Dragon: Doomraga's Revenge Overview

Cornelia Funke is certainly one of the most intrepid new fantasy writers to hit the scene in years, and the release of her holiday novel, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH, only illustrates that fact even more. Funke's trademark magical scenes, and enchanting moments prevail in this fantastical account of two children looking to help the "real" Santa Claus save Christmas. Funke adds her own little touches regarding the holidays, from making Niklas Goodfellow look quite different from what Santa Claus is known to look like; to giving the elves snippy personalities laced with bad language and fierce tempers. The angels Matilda and Emmanuel are saintly characters, whose good-natured, loving attitudes stay true to the spirit of Christmas; while the marzipan-loving Twinklestar is a supreme trouble maker, who you can't help but love. The friendship that develops between Ben and the unlikely Charlotte is quite a treat to witness; while the snowy world of Yule Land is a beauty all in itself. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations (sometimes full-page ones) by Paul Howard, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH is a wonderful, fantastical joyride into the world of Santa Claus, and the many hardships he encounters each year. Legends of the Dragonrealm, Vol. II ReviewWay back in the heady days of my youth, I read to escape the world around me. Devouring books like candy. This series was one of the many I was involved in. At the time I was amazed by it, Incredibly mesmerized by the fantasy world this was all set in.
I want to explain. I have a love for worlds. For universes. I have read and been enamored of thousands of different realms, and the Dragon realms was one such. It is a constantly evolving and increasingly fascinating world, with it's own history, it's own rules and all kinds of interesting characters and places.
I'm telling you all of this because this book is made up of that back story. It explains the existence of many of the different species and characters. The first volume was of "Current" Events, this is more explanatory. The stories are still fascinating, the events exciting. To me though, this is far more thrilling. An entire volume of fascinating events, explaining things that I had questions about from the books in the first novel!
This has plunged me back to my childhood! I remember long nights escaping into this realm, but most importantly, I remember why it grabbed me in the first place! The Fairy Rebel ReviewDon't be fooled by the slim length and simple, straightforward telling of this story-- this is a treat for adults as well as for children. The simplicity of the storytelling reminds me of the Mary Poppins books-- there's more here than meets the eye.
I especially love that the story begins by telling us that if we go to school in London we might meet a little girl called Bindi, with an unusual history. That immediately makes this world of magic "real!"
Unusually for a children's book, the story begins by having us empathize with Jan, a sad bride and former child actress whose career was cut short by a leg injury, and who wants more than anything else to have a child. She is out in the garden weeping over her loneliness when she is startled by Tiki, a fairy who has been "earthed" (i.e., touched a human) when she couldn't follow her friend Wiljic through Jan's toes. Wiljic is mischievous and knew that Tiki was too fat to get through!
Tiki is wearing jeans under her frilly fairy skirt, although it's forbidden by the fairy queen-- "we love her"-- Tiki says loudly-- and fascinated by Jan's loneliness and tears. The lovely insouciance of all of the fairies-- when we eventually meet Wiljic it's too discover he longs for savory foods like boiled egg and is sick of nectar and nasturtium-- is just one of the many details that lend reality to this story. We also know right away that there is trouble in fairyland if the queen makes her subjects so nervous.
Tiki arranges for Jan to have a fairy baby (start a pregancy with a little help) and gets herself and Wiljic in trouble. Meanwhile, Bindi is a nearly perfect human child, with just a small tuft of blue hair... but the fairy queen has not forgotten the disobediance that led to her birth!
This story has all the elements of classic fairy tales but is set in a recognizable modern world. Characters are drawn quickly but have enormous personality-- in the chapter where Bindi wears a wasp necklace sent by the fairy queen which influences her to misbehave, we quickly get a feeling for her school companions, too. That kind of clear, sharp writing reminds me a bit of Lewis and the Narnian chronicles.
My only complaint about this book is that it isn't longer-- although it's just the length it needs to be!
A must-read for anyone needing a smile and a flash of delight.The Fairy Rebel Overview

Condemnation (Forgotten Realms: R.A. Salvatore's War of the Spider Queen, Book 3) ReviewFirst off, for those that are reading this review to know if they should 'go on' in the series should stop right now and buy it. No matter how good this book is, it is a *must have* to continue the saga.
Secondly, I enjoyed the book. I was not bothered by anything in the style of writing such as the combat scenes, or character development. I believe this author gave more life and humor to some of the characters. Pharaun and Valas seemed to pickup a sense of humor in this book as compared to some of the prior books. Although some characters did not develop to a high degree, they assisted in pushing the storyline and the author spent more time on group interaction between the main Drow party. Overall a different author helps give you more experience with other writing styles.
It seems to me that each author does his best to make Quenthel more and more bitchy and "drow priestess" like. :) Each book she gets on my nerves more and more. Like a little spoiled girl with way to much power. Pharaun seems to act more like a teasing brother during this story.
Two things I did not enjoy which keep me from adding that last star:
1. The paper book cover over the hardcover novel is way to small and it makes the book hard to open, and slides off easily. Not a problem with Salvatores hardcover "Demon War Series". I just took it off while I read it (defeating the purpose of course).
2. Unless I am reading it wrong on page 315 the author writes: " 'Save your magic', Quenthel decided. 'That strand will do. Jeggred, Ryld, carry Valas and Danifae'" -- what? Jeggred is not even in the group in this scene, but back on the material plane while they are in the outer planes.... type-o? Pretty big inconsistency if I read that right...
Other then that, Its worth the money. Buy it, read it, and enjoy every minute.Condemnation (Forgotten Realms: R.A.
