The Iron Tower Omnibus (Mithgar) ReviewFirst I must say that most of the other 1-star reviews have detailed this trilogy's manifest faults awfully well - there's not a lot for me to add. I have to say that I'm in agreement with all of the negatives, to wit:
Tolkien plagiarism - well, duh. This makes the "Sword of Shannara" look like a masterpiece of originality in comparison. The very beginning, with the "young buccan Warrows" (McKiernan's strength sure isn't in his naming) practicing their archery, is just about the only scene that doesn't seem like a LOTR swipe. OK, the warrows are a little more warlike than the hobbits. So what? They also have a piece in the appendix called "On Warrows" - they're quite short - they tend to stoutness - they live in a peaceful country all their own and like to avoid the big folks - there's a town on the verge of their country called Stonehill (Bree) populated by men and Warrows, with an inkeeper named Bockleman (Barliman Butterbur) - four of them take part in most of the action of the book, with one Tuck (Frodo) being eventually responsible for the downfall of the bad guy Modru (Sauron) and his boss Gryphon (Morgoth). You get the idea.
But I guess one can plagiarise pretty baldly and get away with it. I don't think McKiernan got sued - if he did, he must have settled quietly - his books are still out there. So let's let go of that. If he's writing a copy, well, how does he write it? Not well at all I'm afraid. His heroes and villains are all paper-thin - Modru comes off as a James Bond villain at best, cackling about his plans to his helpless female prisoner and hissing a lot, and he's evil because....uh...he's evil. The heroes have no personalities either, and most of them cry a lot. There's no sense of landscape, of culture, of history, it all just feels tacked together, all makeshift and cheap, all no more detailed or interesting than the average AD&D game I was playing in college around the time this was first published. Others have mentioned how McKiernan flips back and forth between "quarrels" and "arrows" (it should be the latter in most cases) indiscriminately, but his writing is remarkably lazy and poor throughout. He uses the passive voice an awful lot and throws in archaisms and umlauts and accents recklessly, I guess to make it feel "old" and "epic", but he only succeeds in making himself look illiterate and pretentious. He also has one very curious trait that I've never seen anywhere before - he likes to abbreviate words that are not normally ever abbreviated, e.g. "landscape" becomes " 'scape". This choice and several other equally mysterious ones like using an apostrophe before non-abbreviated words ('Day) help contribute to the general sense that the guy never wrote so much as a letter between college and the writing of this book - and his editors didn't do him any favors.
And he's awfully, awfully obvious. When Tuck finds the Red Quarrel early on, we're never in the slightest doubt that he'll be using it to complete the Big Task and destroy the Big Nasty; when the heroes go underground in Dimmen-whatever (Moria) we know they'll have to face the Balrog-thing; when the eclipse is first mentioned there's never a shred of doubt that they'll have to reach the Big Bad Iron Tower before it. And so on. This is a book almost wholly without subtext, except maybe a very cynical one: how badly can a book be written, and how obvious can it's debt to LOTR be, and yet still be published - and even cherished by fantasy fans with little taste or experience. The answer saddens me.
The Iron Tower Omnibus (Mithgar) OverviewDennis L. McKiernan's Mithgar books are among the most beloved in all of fantasy fiction. The Iron Tower includes the first three novels set in the world of Mithgar-collected in a single volume for the first time-with an all-new introduction by the author.

Gambit's End: Book Three of the Divine Gambit Trilogy ReviewDespite the attempts of a group of mercenaries-turned-heroes, the creature known simply as the Master now threatens to destroy the world of Tralodren and its existing pantheon of gods and goddesses. As Rowan works to save Cadrissa from the Master, Clara strives to keep hope alive among her companions, for this time, the gods themselves take a hand in shaping the destiny of the world. In this conclusion to "The Divine Gambit Trilogy" (Seer's Quest; Path of Power), Corrie has created a world of warring gods and goddesses; peopled it with humans, dwarves, elves, and other races; and infused it with life and color. This saga of faith triumphant belongs in larger fantasy collections.Gambit's End: Book Three of the Divine Gambit Trilogy OverviewIn the spirit of Eragon, Lord of The Rings, Dragonlance and Sword of Shanara, Gambit's End is the final book in The Divine Gambit Trilogy. A fantasy/action-adventure following up the two well-received previous volumes of the series (Seer's Quest and Path of Power), Gambit's End is a powerful and perfect end to this three part story. Though written for a slightly older market, it can still be enjoyed by tweens to teens and adults of all ages. In Gambit's End, The Divine Gambit Trilogy draws to a close when the mercenaries who have been drawn together since Seer's Quest, face off with The Master one last time. Unable to stop him from claiming his goal of godhood, those that survive discover the full scope of his plans and ultimately see just how large this gambit really is. With this greater revelation the three surviving mercenaries go on a desperate journey to try and find a way to stop The Master from not only claiming Tralodren as his own but all the power of the Tralodroen Pantheon as well. They are not alone in this as the gods have taken action, and sides, adding more complexity and uncertainly to the outcome. Between the various divine factions and alliances, surviving members of a mercenary band desperate to find the key to a weapon they hope to use against The Master, and two cosmic forces who are playing everyone as pawns in their own game, the gambit comes to an end that many had not been expecting.

Darkblade: Reign of Blood ReviewMalus Darkblade is a dark elf warrior, ruthless and untrustworthy. Yet one battle led him to the treasure that would change his life forever, and NOT for the better. Malus Darkblade is cursed by a bestial abomination, the daemon named Tz'arkan. Malus has one year, four seasons, in which to seek out and bring back five unholy relics. If he does not, he will die. If he succeeds, the daemon will lift the curse. What Malus does not realize is that even should he succeed and the daemon keep his promise to lift the curse, things will never be the same again.
***** I had no idea that this Warhammer novel was actually all the Darkblade comics published thus far, collected into one convenient novel. I am so happy to have gotten this book! It is full of battles, gore, sorcerery, mayhem, and all the wonderful things Warhammer readers enjoy to the fullest! And remember, Malus Darkblade is a "dark elf warrior". No running off to save damsels in distress for him! Within these covers readers will find four complete books. Don't ask how many comics are within each book. I did not count. I was too busy enjoying the high rush of excitement that comes from Darkblade's adventures. The script is by Dan Abnett. The lettering and art is by Kev Hopgood. The cover is by Clint Langley. Very highly recommended reading! *****

Dragon Avenger (Age of Fire, Book 2) ReviewDragon Avenger by E.E. Knight is the second book in the Age of Fire cycle. It tells the tale of Wistala, the sister of Dragon Champion's Auron. The book starts in the same place as the first. With the hatching of the clutch in the cave. and for the first several chapters, it tells the same story, but through Wistala's viewpoint. This time when Wistala and Auron part, she believes he is the one who dies.
Wistala takes off to find her father who flew off to exact vengeance upon the Wheel of Fire Dwarves who betrayed them. She even manages to find him, near death from his rash attack, and spends some time trying to nurse him back to health. Being a coming of age story, of course the outcome of this reunion is bound to be temporary, and it is. Wistala is forced to flee and is nearly killed by the Dragonblade. Tala, though is rescued by a kindly elf named Rainfall. and she spends the majority of the book growing up in his company. Not a lot of avenging going on yet huh? just a lot of talking cats, and mules, Well the avenging does come. Events lead to Wistala getting the opportunity to take revenge on all who have wronged her, and her family, and she takes full advantage.
I liked the book, it was a light entertaining read for the most part. It felt more like a young adult novel than Champion did. Perhaps it was because of the different feel from the Dragonelles perspective. Perhaps it was where the first book had talking wolves, this one had cats, and horses, and mules, and buzzards. Perhaps I just didn't notice it in the first book. Anyway, Knight does a nice job of expanding his world. We see different areas than we did with Auron. We learn more about the history of the land. He also creates characters that you get attached too. I found myself saddened by the loss of certain characters. Its a worthy follow up to Dragon Champion. The next book in the series is slated to be about the little maimed Copper. I look forward to it.
7 out of 10Dragon Avenger (Age of Fire, Book 2) OverviewFrom the national bestselling, award-winning author of Dragon Champion-second in the fantastic new Age of Fire series. Flung to freedom as their mother battles a group of slave-trading dwarves, young Wistala and her gray, scaleless brother, Auron, find themselves alone in the Upper World. And when Auron sacrifices himself so that she may live, Wistala must overcome her grief and fear to find others of her kind-and bring her wrath to bear on those who would destroy them.

The Light of Burning Shadows: Book Two of the Iron Elves ReviewThe Calahrian Empire still teeters from the assault of the elf witch Shadow Monarch whose allies include the new even more violent Viceroy of Elfkyna. Their greatest unit against the evil insurgency, the Iron Elves, remains disdained by their people for the tattoo representing their subservience to the Shadow Monarch. The people feel this way in spite of their great victory led by Commander Konowa Swift Dragon preventing the Shadow Monarch from obtaining the Red Star at the Battle of Luuguth Jor (see A DARKNESS FORGED IN FIRE).
Instead of lifting the frost fire curse from his men by using the Red Star, Konowa gives it to the Elfkynal; angering his soldiers who saw brothers in arms die and return as shades or maimed in the battle. Prince Tykkin directs Konowa to retrieve a new Star reported in the Hasshugeb Expanse. Konowa knows the witch will seek the Star too so he needs reinforcements so he sends Iron Elves to recruit those peers who failed to return when the unit was reactivated. He tries to calm down his outraged unit who believe they should be freed first and then defeat the evil while he deems they must defeat the evil first. At the same time the Shadow Monarch sends her servant the Viceroy of Elfkyna to darken the woodlands while a new flame has arisen that eats the shadow from the body until the person expires; death in those cases does not mean returning as a shade.
Although the overarching theme does not move forward, the second Iron Elves high quest fantasy is a great tale as Chris Evans expands the author's world adding much depth to it. The story line once again focuses on Konowa and his unit who though victorious still hurt mentally and physically from the recent battle and their commander's decision on the Red Star. Fans will enjoy this fine entry as Konowa seems on the verge of PTSD caused not just by sending men to die knowing they are cursed to become shades, but also having to make difficult decisions, which keep his men in harm's way.

The Heart of Lichien ReviewDon't let the fact that this book is 602 pages daunt you. By the time you get to Page 602, you'll be begging for more.
The author lures you into "The Heart of Lichien" right from the beginning. From page one you're drawn into Kellen's world, which leads to all the other characters, all of whom are richly drawn, each with their own unique past with mysterious hints that leave you wanting to know more.
Not only do the characters have heart and depth but the universe of Sennovia and its history will draw you in as well with its myths and legends and sorcery and magic and the thrill of battles lost and won. Will good win over evil? And how much will Kellen and his friends lose in the winning?
In the same vein as "Lost", the author answers one question only to leave you with another. Her adventuresome group of characters leave you wanting to spend much more time in the Sennovia universe, just as Weis and Hickman do with the Dragonlance series. There is that same sense of grand adventure in "The Heart of Lichien." Of an adventuring group that don't always see eye to eye but don't cross one of them or you'll answer to the others. You'll be left bemoaning their loses, cheering their victories and crying out delightedly for more adventures.
This is a book that runs of the gamut of The Great Adventure. Deceit. Honor. Courage. Failure. Tears. Laughter. Love. Hate. All encompassed in that great spirit of adventure. Of reaching for and achieving more than we are. Don't miss out on it. This one's a keeper. The Heart of Lichien OverviewA fast-paced, fantasy adventure set in the land of Sennovia.A land far to the north, shadowed in mysticism.A place spoken about only in whispers, a place cursed.Yet this is the very place Kellen finds he must go, despite his fears, as the Black Guard of legend invade his homeland. He is captured by the rebels and unwittingly joins their cause to save the Throne and a beloved princess. His path seems simple until he meets Sasheer, a man hauntingly familar, handsome, cynical, and far more dnagerous than all the dark whispers combined.Plagued by sensual nightmares and befriended by an unusual Drow warrior, Kellen must now decide what is real and what is imagined before the events of the past come back to kill them all.

Santopia - Book One: Santa & the Lost Princess ReviewFar north, in the magical realm of Santopia, the current Santa has a new son. The Wizard issues a prophesy for this new heir to the kingdom, which says baby Nicky will marry the first girl born after him.
But over in the kingdom of Drear, the Countess is nearly about to give birth. After hearing the prophesy, she induces labor and is pleased when her daughter, Dazzle is born. That is, until she learns another couple has also given birth to a daughter, who may have been born before Dazzle.
Upsetting the Countess of Drear is never a good idea, so this poor couple needs to do something quickly before they and their new daughter lose their lives. Escape is dangerous and nearly impossible, and intrigue and treachery abound.
This story is set at Christmas, and is full of colorful holiday imagery. Many of the Santa traditions are included, making the story feel real. But one thing I found a little confusing was the different races at Santopia that all ended in "elves" - Gelves, Trelves, etc.
I enjoyed this story, and found myself cheering for the young couple to save themselves and their daughter. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the ending, which left the story at an obvious cliff-hanger. If you love Santa and Christmas, I think you'll enjoy this fast-paced and fun tale.
Reviewer: Alice BergerSantopia - Book One: Santa & the Lost Princess OverviewSanta has a new son, and it's immediately prophesied that the next girl born after the day-old Prince Nicky will grow up to be his Queen.Soon after Nicky's birth, the Baroness von Drear gives birth to a baby girl, but when she discovers that a girl was born to a peasant family just hours before her own, she sets out to kill the baby girl and her family.

Ice Dragon (Dragonrealm) ReviewThis book returns us to the realm Knaak first created so vividly in "FireDrake." Our hero Cabe Bedlam is forced into conflict with Ice Dragon, who has hatched a mad scheme to engulf the world in an eternal winter.
The story is not half as silly as it sounds. Not even a quarter. Maybe a tenth, though. Seriously, this is a good read. It fleshes out the setting and the characters even further while providing another entertaining, fast moving story.
The only drawback to this book is that there is less intrigue and surprises. Still worth a read.Ice Dragon (Dragonrealm) OverviewThe dragon emperor has fallen and the remaining drake lords now vie for control. Yet, when Duke Toma, the emperor's son, turns to one for aid in revenge against the wizard Cabe Bedlam and his companions, the drake little realized understands what he unleashes. Unknown to all, the Ice Dragon has other plans for the land...cold, bitter plans that may spell the end for both drake and man.

The Keepers of Elenath ReviewSoon after I started this book, I could easily tell it was Bradburn's first novel. The beginning of the plot was confusing: it revealed something awfully quickly, and I couldn't discern the direction of the storyline at all. These starting events were necessary, but could have been written better. About 100 pages in, the story took a solid form and I began to enjoy it. I was a little disappointed when there wasn't too much of the training-in-secret-practices scene that I always enjoy, but it looks as if that will come in the second book. I noticed that many terms were used a few times too many ("former princess," for example) in a short space of time. Overall, the plot and characters steadily improved as the book progressed.
What this means to a Christian: There are many people in the world who call themselves Christians. Many actually are, but some may not have a true understanding. It is the job of those who do to give them, and everyone else, the truth, and an opportunity to know Christ. The Keepers of Elenath OverviewEvil is stirring in Elenath. A rapid chain of events: a righteous king's murder, a dark queen's seizure of the throne, and the stirring of ancient peoples opens a new chapter in Elenath's history. Dark powers seek to control all and a bare few stand against the sinister forces. At the center of the tempest lies Gwaeron, princess of Anirum. Secrets surround her true identity, and the strange gifts she is capable of are sought after by both sides of the silent war. Another evil haunting the land of Elenath; sweeping from the northwestern wasteland to Anirum's eastern coast is the dreaded eves fornost. Hearts of human, elf, etel, and gnome will turnfor good or evil. And the worst is yet to come.

The Soulforge (Dragonlance: The Raistlin Chronicles, Book 1) ReviewThe Soulforge, a novel which tells of the early days of Raistlin and his twin Caramon, is an excellent story which answers a number of questions regarding Raistlin's past. Margaret Weis, one of the authors of the original DragonLance Chronicles and Legends trilogies is at her best when she writes about her favorite character -- the mage Raistlin. All the elements that made the original trilogies is recaptured here and definitely brings back memories of those two excellent trilogies published fifteen years ago.
The Soulforge begins with Raistlin at age six and progresses until his taking of The Test at age twenty-one. A number of the Heroes of the Lance also make appearances and meet each other for the first time. This is the only problem with the novel. The purpose of the Meetings Sextet written about ten years ago was to introduce readers to the Heroes of the Lance before their adventures in Chronicles. However, the utilization of the characters and their meetings with/introduction to one another in this novel differs at times from the stories originally presented in the Meetings Sextet. Other than that, this is an outstanding work which warrants a five star rating.
We get to see Raistlin progress from a child who was always picked on by others to his being the youngest mage to take The Test. We also learn the origin of Raistlin's magic at an early age, his golden skin tone, the reasoning behind his harsh/untrusting attitude toward others, the cause of his frailty, etc. Overall, if you're a Raistlin and/or DragonLance fan, The Soulforge is a must-read.The Soulforge (Dragonlance: The Raistlin Chronicles, Book 1) OverviewA mage's soul is forged in the crucible of magic. Raistlin Majere is six years old when he is introduced to the archmage who enrolls him in a school for the study of magic. There the gifted and talented but tormented boy comes to see magic as his salvation. Mages in the magical Tower of High Sorcery watch him in secret, for they see shadows darkening over Raistlin even as the same shadows lengthen over all Ansalon. Finally, Raistlin draws near his goal of becoming a wizard. But first he must take the drea Test in the Tower of High Sorcery. It will change his life forever -- if he survives.

The Shaping of Middle-Earth: The Quenta, the Ambarkanta and the Annals (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 4) ReviewIn the third volume in The History of Middle Earth series, Christopher Tolkien picks up where he left off with The Book Lost Tales. In this volume you will see the central themes in Middle Earth evolve a little closer to what we see in the Silmarillion. You will see the early Silmarillion and the Annals of both Valinor and Beleriand. Also incuded are maps drawn by Tolkien himself showing his early ideas for the geography of Middle Earth and Numenor. Moreover, in his attempt to make the Silmarillion seem more like a real history (which it is in some of our hearts) Tolkien has translated parts of the Annals and the Silmarillion into the native language of Elfwine, Old English. I recommend this book for anyone who loves Tolkien's works. The Shaping of Middle-Earth: The Quenta, the Ambarkanta and the Annals (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 4) Overview

Mark of Chaos (Warhammer Novels) ReviewThis novel is set the year following the Great War against Chaos (2302). The action mostly follows two characters Stefan von Kessel, a Captain in the Ostermark army and Hroth the Blooded a chaos champion.
The book is virtually non-stop action as the two leaders fight their way to their eventual confrontation at Talabheim. The action is fast, furious and bloody as both champions must face external opponents and betrayal from their own side. The various battles are well-paced and provide enough details to engage the reader. The final battle is excellent
The book is heavy on action and somewhat light on character development but I found both main characters to be interesting. Despite the fact that this book has the same plot as the video game of the same name, it is an excellent action-packed Warhammer novel, well worth reading.Mark of Chaos (Warhammer Novels) OverviewThis is the action-packed novelization of Namco's hit computer game of war on a formidable scale. The dark forces of Chaos are an ever-present threat to the civilized lands of the Empire. Their regular incursions call for mankind to defend its life to the last man if necessary. It is a crucible where heroes are made and legends are born! When a young commander is caught up in this carnage of war, he must prove his honor by tracking down and destroying one of the most feared enemy leaders. With massive promotion alongside the computer game, this thrilling novel is sure to satisfy the battle-hungry appetites of games players and Warhammer fans alike!

The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel ReviewThis book is actually a compilation of three novels; "Sheep Farmer's Daughter", "Divided Allegiance" and "Oath of Gold". I like to think that these books started the popular trend in fantasy, of featuring women in heroic roles. Paks, (the heroine in question), manages to be a better soldier than most while still being sensitive to her feelings and friends.
Unlike many works of fantasy, Moon is more interested in the characters and their struggles and triumphs than in the fantastic creations of her world. I'm not saying that her world is not well rendered, it is, but it is the people in this story that demand the reader's attention. They are real, emotional beings with strengths, flaws and inconsistencies, just like the rest of us.
There is also a surprising amount of military detail in the story. In fact it taught me a thing or two about medieval fighting both from a lone warrior standpoint and that of an army.
Fair warning to those who intend to read this series; start on the Friday night. At least that way you won't jeopardise your job by coming in without any sleep. The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel OverviewIgnoring her father's plans for her, Paksenarrion leaves her family and sets off for the army, where her heroic restoration of a lost ruler to his throne will make her a legend.

The Demon Apostle (The Demonwars Saga) ReviewI found this book awe inspiring, for any true fan of Salvatore's this is a must read and if you are just a fantasy fan you can't go far wrong with this master piece. The book folows many twists and turns from hope to dispair and back again taking the reader along for the ride. The book lacks nothing and wets your appetite for the next adventure. Salvatore has shown us that he still has the ability to write a great adventure after doubts sprung from the continuation of the legendary Drizzt saga which is beginning to spiral out of control. The book follows a well structured path which leaves the reader spending countless hours turning page after page with no realisation of time. I would recommend this book to anyone and would challenge the opinion of anyone who doubted its originality. The Demon Apostle (The Demonwars Saga) Overview

Song of the Dragon: The Annals of Drakis: Book One ReviewDrakis, a committed soldier-slave of the elven Rhonas Empire has been at war for what seems like years, and he has not been to the house devotions in far too long. The ceremony puts his mind to rest, and reinforces his love for the Empire. But, after the destruction of the last remaining dwarven kingdom, everything seems to come unglued. A captured dwarf can seem to tell him the future, and after the magical well that support's his elven master's house is destroyed, he seems to wake up. The house devotions were actually a magical brainwashing device, a magical procedure that erased all memories of how brutal and sadistic the elves truly are, and now Drakis is remembering more than he wants to.
Collecting those few slaves that were not driven insane by the destruction of the magical well, Drakis and his band set off to find safety beyond the borders of the Empire. But, the Iblisi, a sort of elven secret police or Inquisition who guard the Empire from the truth (and strangely enough, guard the truth from the Empire), are on his trail, determined to end his run and put the truth back where it belongs. Many believe that Drakis is the man from an ancient prophecy, the man who will release the ancient dragons and overthrow the Empire. Drakis doesn't believe it, but if he and his band are to stay alive, he might just have to do exactly what the prophecy says!
Wow, what a great book! I love books that use the traditional fantasy races of elves and dwarves, especially when they are used in new and interesting ways. Well, just like Mr. Hickman's Death Gate Cycle, this book also takes the fantasy traditions and turns them...well, definitely on a new angle.
This book has some very interesting races. The humans and dwarves are just as you would expect, but the elves are marginally different. Also, Mr. Hickman introduces the lion-man manticores and the four-armed chimerians, which are very interesting races indeed.
But, best of all, the author does a great job of keeping up the suspense and the drama of the story from start to finish. There are so many interesting happenings, and exciting fights and chases, that the book is nearly impossible to put down! I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment of the Annals of Drakis!Song of the Dragon: The Annals of Drakis: Book One OverviewOnce humans had magic and an alliance with dragons. Now they and the other races have been enslaved by the Rhonas Empire-the elves-and can't even remember the world the way it used to be. But thanks to the intervention of one determined dwarf and the human slave warrior known as Drakis, all of that is about to change.

Most Legion forces on Azeroth have been slain or driven into hiding. Yet now a mysterious energy rift in the mountains of Kalimdor propels three heroes to the distant past: the dragon mage Krasus, the human wizard Rhonin, and the weathered orc veteran Broxigar. It is a time long before orcs, humans, or even high elves roamed the world. A time that marks the Legion's first invasion of Azeroth, brought about by Queen Azshara and other night elf nobles. A time when the Dragon Aspects are at the height of their power -- unaware that one of their own will soon turn on the world he was charged to protect.

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne ReviewWow. What a surprise.
This is a prequel novel to the upcoming video game Dragon Age: Origins, by Bioware. I was reading it more to `get in the mood' for the game than anything, and I had very low expectations, to be honest. And I was blown away.
I'm giving it 4 stars, and that is judging it against all fantasy, not against "pre-generated world" fantasy (novels based on games, movies, tv series, etc). Within that sub-genre it's a 5 star book, easily.
As the story begins, a cruel usurper sits on the throne of Ferelden, and the Rebel Queen has been betrayed and murdered. The only member left of the royal family is young Maric, a charming but slightly inept princeling, now on the run for his life. He soon teams up with a young commoner named Loghain, and the two set off to reunite with the rebel army, and begin the daunting challenge of trying to push the usurper from his ill-gained throne.
There's a bit of game-ness to the book here and there as character classes are mentioned, but it isn't very intrusive and if you didn't know it was a game-prequel novel, you might not even notice it.
The story has everything you could ask for in a fantasy. A noble, seemingly impossible quest, great battles, characters who feel very real, and who interact in ways that also feel very human. A smattering of magic and strange creatures. Joy and pain, victory and defeat. All written with genuine emotion.
A nice change of pace is the way elves are handled, and particularly elves, who are definitely second class citizens in this world, scraping by working as servants and living in squalid quarters of most cities.
All in all, a very, very enjoyable read, and a very 'self-contained' novel. You aren't left with a cliff-hanger ending that is going to require you to play the game or read another novel. You can download a sample chapter from http://dragonage.bioware.com/noveltst.ht...
I hope the author, David Gaider, focuses on more novel writing, and less game writing. I'd love to read more from him!Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne OverviewThe thrilling prequel to Dragon Age: Origins, the hit role-playing video game from award-winning developer BioWare!Dragon Age: The Stolen ThroneAfter his mother, the beloved Rebel Queen, is betrayed and murdered by her own faithless lords, young Maric becomes the leader of a rebel army attempting to free his nation from the control of a foreign tyrant. His countrymen live in fear; his commanders consider him untested; and his only allies are Loghain, a brash young outlaw who saved his life, and Rowan, the beautiful warrior maiden promised to him since birth. Surrounded by spies and traitors, Maric must find a way to not only survive but achieve his ultimate destiny: Ferelden's freedom and the return of his line to the stolen throne.
