The Annotated legends (Dragonlance Legends) ReviewThe Legends Trilogy definitely deserves a 5-star rating. I rate this edition as 3-star strictly because of the annotations.
Legends follows up the great Chronicles trilogy, with Raistlin, Caramon, and Tas embarking on a time-traveling adventure with enormous consequences for the entire world of Krynn. The story takes on a much more personal feeling in Legends, with the focus being narrowed to a few key characters and the plot seemingly less epic than the previous trilogy (even though the events have a larger potential impact on the world). This trilogy also has a darker and more serious feel, with much more emotional clarity and desperate circumstances. The characters are forced to make difficult sacrifices and each seems to fight their own form of depression.
The main premise focuses on Raistlin's efforts to become the most powerful mage of all time and challenge the gods themselves. Caramon and Crysiana fight their own personal battles to discover themselves and achieve peace with the world. Tas basically tags along in innocent curiosity and a desire to help his friends.
The annotations of this version add nothing to the story. I was hoping for interesting insights from the authors telling about their views of what the various characters are thinking or what really happened in alluded to events. Instead you get a whole bunch of repetitive and obvious commentary along with self-important glorifications of the authors' talent and foresight. This was my fourth journey through the Legends trilogy and it was by far the least enjoyable due to the distracting influence of pointless annotations. You would think that you'd be able to just ignore the commentary, but its impossible as you keep telling yourself that there must be at least a little useful information only to be disappointed time and again.

The Crimson Shadow ReviewBefore I picked up this trilogy, I had heard whispers of Luthien and his halfling companion Oliver DeBurrows. Then I actually read the trilogy. I was surprised. Salvatore is well known for great characters, and in this trilogy he doesn't dissapoint, especially with Oliver (who he actually roleplayed for along time) The only character I wasn't too fond of was the half-elf, but she grew on me. The story itself was good as well, though at parts it did seem kind of rushed. Anyways, the Crimson Shadow trilogy is something that Salvatore fans, and fantasy fans will enjoy.The Crimson Shadow OverviewTHE CRIMSON SHADOW is an omnibus reissue of R.A. Dragon Champion (Age of Fire, Book 1) ReviewE. E. Knight's Dragon Champion continues the popular tradition of animal perspective fantasy, but instead of rabbits, moles, or other woodland creatures as the protagonists, he carries it a step further with an animal which itself is a fantasy - dragons. It's a very clever concept, and like Knight's Vampire Earth series, he executes the basic concept with wit, excitement and flair.
Told from the viewpoint of Auron (later AuRon, when his wings develop and he can fly), it's a tale of a dying breed among men, Elves and Dwarves, and one dragon's quest to learn his place in the world and how he might change it.
This is not a fairy tale, for there is plenty of graphic violence, and the novel opens with a rather savage birth ritual involving survival of the fittest from a clutch of hatching dragon eggs. Knight blends his story with fascinating dragon lore, and manages to cover nearly everything you've ever heard regarding dragons, keeping the legends plausible, while maintaining his narrative pace and picaresque plot.
Knight does not make the mistake, as so often occurs in this sub-genre of fantasy, of making every human character evil. There are good and bad men, and there are good and bad dragons.
This novel is complete in itself, but my understanding is that Knight plans to continue the series with novels told from the perspectives of AuRon's surviving sister and brother, and then a grand finale fourth volume tying all three together.
Get in on the beginning, readers. It's going to be something special.Dragon Champion (Age of Fire, Book 1) OverviewAfter escaping those who killed his siblings, Young Auron, a rare, defenseless gray dragon, fears he might be the last of his breed. Armed with nothing but his claws and a boundless determination to survive, he sets off in search of his kind. But to find other dragons-or, at least, find out who's killing them off-Auron will have to search a world of mercenary elves, vicious humans, and dangers of all kinds. Finding allies in the strangest places-and himself along the way-Auron is on the trek of a lifetime.

The Light of Burning Shadows: Book Two of the Iron Elves ReviewThe Calahrian Empire still teeters from the assault of the elf witch Shadow Monarch whose allies include the new even more violent Viceroy of Elfkyna. Their greatest unit against the evil insurgency, the Iron Elves, remains disdained by their people for the tattoo representing their subservience to the Shadow Monarch. The people feel this way in spite of their great victory led by Commander Konowa Swift Dragon preventing the Shadow Monarch from obtaining the Red Star at the Battle of Luuguth Jor (see A DARKNESS FORGED IN FIRE).
Instead of lifting the frost fire curse from his men by using the Red Star, Konowa gives it to the Elfkynal; angering his soldiers who saw brothers in arms die and return as shades or maimed in the battle. Prince Tykkin directs Konowa to retrieve a new Star reported in the Hasshugeb Expanse. Konowa knows the witch will seek the Star too so he needs reinforcements so he sends Iron Elves to recruit those peers who failed to return when the unit was reactivated. He tries to calm down his outraged unit who believe they should be freed first and then defeat the evil while he deems they must defeat the evil first. At the same time the Shadow Monarch sends her servant the Viceroy of Elfkyna to darken the woodlands while a new flame has arisen that eats the shadow from the body until the person expires; death in those cases does not mean returning as a shade.
Although the overarching theme does not move forward, the second Iron Elves high quest fantasy is a great tale as Chris Evans expands the author's world adding much depth to it. The story line once again focuses on Konowa and his unit who though victorious still hurt mentally and physically from the recent battle and their commander's decision on the Red Star. Fans will enjoy this fine entry as Konowa seems on the verge of PTSD caused not just by sending men to die knowing they are cursed to become shades, but also having to make difficult decisions, which keep his men in harm's way.

The Hobbit Review[This is a review of the 70th Anniversary Edition, not so much of THE HOBBIT itself. I've reviewed the book proper elsewhere, and would rather focus on the actual edition itself.]
THE HOBBIT is one of those few books that I have felt justified to buy multiple copies over the years. It is a book I have read and cherished, and a book I dearly love. THE HOBBIT is a novel that deserves to be bought multiple times over, and I always enjoy looking at new editions of this classic work. So imagine my excitement when I found out they would be publishing a 70th anniversary edition of one of my most cherished novels!
This has been a big year for Tolkien fans. Christopher Tolkien published THE CHILDREN OF HURIN, a newly completed version of Turin's legend, in April. We've gotten (at long last), THE HISTORY OF THE HOBBIT, expertly handled by brilliant Tolkien scholar John D. Ratcliffe and published in two separate volumes. And of course, we have the 70th anniversary of Tolkien's first primary work, THE HOBBIT, which this edition is published in celebration of that momentous occasion. And does it live up as a major new edition of this fantasy classic?
That's a pretty easy answer. The answer is NO.
First off, here are the positives. The 70th anniversary edition is pretty much how the first edition of THE HOBBIT was actually published back in 1937 with some notable improvements, and conforming to Tolkien's pretty exacting specifications, including how the dust jacket should appear, as well as the art and maps that accompany the text.
These are the notable differences between the first edition and this edition. Due to cost, Tolkien was not able from a production standpoint to have the book appear exactly as he envisioned. The 1937 publication cut some of his artwork, the map was not how he so desired, and the dust jacket, due to printing cost, was limited to three primary colours (green, black, and white). Originally, Tolkien wanted the sun on the front cover and the dragon on the back cover to be totally in red, but this was not feasible.
Obviously Tolkien's work is successful enough that these production costs are no longer an issue, and so this is a relatively accurate facsimile of what Tolkien would have wanted to publish in 1937 had money not been an object, as it too often is in the real world. For that, this edition has some worth.
Now, there are some negatives. And these are big negatives.
First off, paper quality and binding. It's bad.
Then there's the actual art work. The colour artwork is quite nicely implemented into the main text, and overall I don't have a problem with the colour artwork from a production standpoint. The paintings are bright and colourful, and remain true to higher quality prints of Tolkien's phenomenal painting. But unfortunately the same cannot be said of the black and white illustrations. Like a reviewer said before me, it appears Tolkien's drawings were reproduced on a cheap scanner. Tolkien's artwork is highly valuable, but unfortunately the drawings here are rather badly reproduced in this edition.
Then there's the advertisement for LOTR at the end that's rather annoying. They reproduce the first chapter of FELLOWSHIP and place it at the end of the novel, acting like a cheap plug for Tolkien's masterpiece. I don't have any problem with plugging LOTR, but to me this inclusion of the first chapter just cheapens the whole book, especially when it's supposed to be a major edition of a major work. We all know about LOTR. Do we really need the first chapter here? Rather tacky, to say the least.
Then there's the problem of Christopher Tolkien's forward. This is what I was most looking forward too, actually. Having read E. A. Solinas's review, I was under the impression this was a new forward prepared specifically by Christopher for the 70th anniversary of his father's work. Not the case. It's simply a reprint of the forward he wrote for the 50th anniversary of THE HOBBIT, twenty years previously.
As far as textual authenticity, I must be honest in the fact that I've only browsed it at a Borders bookstore, but I'd be very surprised if they did not use the text from The Annotated Hobbit, as it is the most definitive and accurate text yet established for the book. Still, I can't verify that that is the case.
Overall, this is a fair edition of THE HOBBIT. It could have been a lot more. What sets this apart from the other copies is this is how Tolkien truly envisioned how he wanted the book to appear, and for that fact alone, this is a valuable edition to the Tolkien collector. Unfortunately the poor production quality of the black and while illustrations, the rather tacky inclusion of LOTR's first chapter, and the disappointment of the publishers' just reprinting a twenty year old introduction to the 50th anniversary publication rather brings the whole affair down. I think I'll pass on this one.
For those looking for the best edition of Tolkien's book, buy THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT, first published in 1988 and republished in a new format in 2003. The second version of THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT is the definitive edition of this phenomenal work as far as I'm concerned.The Hobbit Overview

Road of the Patriarch (Forgotten Realms: The Sellswords, Book 3) ReviewRoad to the Patriarch by R.A. Salvatore is the third, and final, book in the Sellswords Trilogy. The first being Servant of the Shard and the Second being Promise of the Witch-King. This book takes place right after the events of Promise of the Witch-King and continues the tale of Jarlaxle and Artemis and their journey together as Artemis seeks to come to grips with his past.
As with most Salvatore books this one has a decent mix of characters and plot, however, no matter how well constructed this plot is - this book is largely about character development. Fans of Salvatore have watched both Jarlaxle and Artemis grow as characters through several books, aside from the Drizzt books, the growth of Artemis in this book may be the single biggest development in a character in one book I have read in a long time. We learn a little about Jarlaxle's past, but this book focuses mainly on Artemis. Jarlaxle is merely along for the ride. There are some things in this book that are not usually found in Forgotten Realms books, some of the content - but to say more about that would be giving spoilers. I will say that the journey that Artemis undertakes in the second half of this book is gritty and filled with heartache.
The plot of this book can really be divided into two parts. The first part focuses on Jarlaxle and Artemis' time dealing with Grandmaster Kane and the Citadel of Assassins in the Bloodstone Lands, while the second half focuses quite a bit of Artemis' individual journey that leads to some shocking moments. I will say that the second half of the book seemed, at times, slightly rushed. Mostly because Salvatore knew what he wanted to happen and needed to fit it all in. I am guessing this book could have been 400+ pages easily. The plot is well laid out and everything that happens makes perfect sense. Salvatore obviously invested a great deal of time making sure the story stayed true to the characters and their situation. This allows the reader to care that much more about what is going on in the story.
Salvatore has a knack for weaving a believable story with characters that seem so real. We all know Artemis is a very skilled assassin, yet, while reading this book you can't help but care deeply for his story and his past and how that played a part in who he is. If you are looking for large scale battles, this book may be a disappointment to you. If you are looking for wizard battles and lots of magic, this book may be a disappointment to you. However, if you are looking for an excellently crafted character driven story, I am pretty you will enjoy this. This is classic Salvatore and fans will surely find something in this book to enjoy.
Fans of the Forgotten Realms and Salvatore will find this book and enjoy it. New fans would be encouraged to go back and read the rest of Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books before reading this one, that way all the events and discussions will make more sense. However, picking up the Sellsword Trilogy should be ok as well. I will continue to recommend Salvatore as an author I enjoy a great deal. This was a ride well worth taking.

The author gets us right into the story with great economy, gradually revealing Annie's back story as we move forward in action. I actually felt I was reading a Dungeons and Dragons game. You can tell it's the first attempt at a novel. Forever After ReviewIn this last work of Roger Zelazny, he culled together a grouping of four absolutely top-notch authors for a collaborative effort. Mike Stackpole, David Drake, Robert Asprin and Jane Lindskold each chronicle an individual quest of recently separated companions. The quests are to return to safekeeping various magical items whose combined presence is tearing up the very fabric of reality.
Stackpole gives us the story of the loyal assassin and his mission to return a powerful amulet to its former resting place, now that it's use is no longer required. In his quest for the most absolutely perfect ways of killing his enemies, the assassin has surpassed all others, confronting his former teacher in a climactic battle over ownership of the powerful item. I personally feel this to have been one of Stackpole's best works, and on its merit alone is this book an excellent read.
David Drake gives us the story of an elf and a norse woman determined to rid themselves of a powerful ring. They set out across a terribly desolate region to dispose of the ring, with incredible danger and death hounding them the whole way. Personally I considered this the least of the stories -- I just could not get into it, although the dialogue between the questors and the ring is amusing at times.
Asprin provides the funniest of the stories, with a dragon's perspective of an encounter with a warrior. You see, the warrior figures to get the dragon to guard the deadly sword he has been commissioned to dispose of. The dragon has other ideas. The solution to the dilemma is very nicely devised by the hero, as is the slight twist ending. I really enjoyed this story.
Lindskold gives us the quest of the Army's best commander to return an ancient scroll from whence it came. During the journey, various things arouse her suspicions as to the true motives behind the quests on which she and her erstwhile companions have been sent. Realizing a great danger is building, she hastens home to the upcoming wedding and coronation of the nation's newly acknowledged monarchs.
Preceding each story, and wrapping up the saga is a bridging story by Zelazny himself. These stories form the backbone of the global picture, as it were. In fact, these could almost be read as a well-written story unto themselves, with the intervening stories merely fleshing out the details. Since that was the plan, it was carried off quite successfully. I highly recommend this book, especially for those who enjoy slightly off-the-wall fantasy, as this book possesses that in spades. The Fallen Fortress (Forgotten Realms: The Cleric Quintet, Book 4) ReviewI should first say that I grew up on Salvatore's books and have always considered him as a master of fantasy writing... until I read this one. Having enjoyed Canticle, been ok with In Sylvan Shadows, and absolutely loved the concept of the Ghearufu in Night Masks - The Fallen Fortress, as title suggests, fell flat on its face.
Suddenly, Cadderly's steady growth as a character ground to a flat halt. In Fallen Fortress, he is omniscient, all-powerful, etc, etc. He can do anything; nothing affects him. The rendition of his emotional turmoil in this book is flat and hard to sympathize with. This makes for very boring reading. Maturity of characters? I don't think so - everyone here is predictable and does not grow.
Plotwise, there is nothing interesting - there is nothing to match the invention of Cadderly's yo-yo or crossbow in the earlier books, or the originality of the evil artifact mentioned above. Instead, potential plotlines are disappointingly dashed aside. Eg. I was intrigued when a certain villain "came back" - that would have made perfect material for advancing the plot. But instead, the book kills him off unceremoniously, without exploiting his potental (to the plot) - what a waste.The Fallen Fortress (Forgotten Realms: The Cleric Quintet, Book 4) OverviewR.A. Salvatore's The Cleric Quintet tells the tale of the scholar-priest Cadderly, who is plucked from the halls of the Edificant Library to fulfill a heroic quest across the land of Faerûn.Cadderly leads the combined forces of Carradoon and Shilmista against Castle Trinity, stronghold of his enemy Aballister. But another mission calls him on a journey leading into a past he hoped he would be able to forget.

Mark of Chaos (Warhammer Novels) ReviewThis novel is set the year following the Great War against Chaos (2302). The action mostly follows two characters Stefan von Kessel, a Captain in the Ostermark army and Hroth the Blooded a chaos champion.
The book is virtually non-stop action as the two leaders fight their way to their eventual confrontation at Talabheim. The action is fast, furious and bloody as both champions must face external opponents and betrayal from their own side. The various battles are well-paced and provide enough details to engage the reader. The final battle is excellent
The book is heavy on action and somewhat light on character development but I found both main characters to be interesting. Despite the fact that this book has the same plot as the video game of the same name, it is an excellent action-packed Warhammer novel, well worth reading.Mark of Chaos (Warhammer Novels) OverviewThis is the action-packed novelization of Namco's hit computer game of war on a formidable scale. Immortalis (The Second DemonWars Saga, Book 3) ReviewIn this final volume of the Demon Wars saga, Salvatore delivers a truly great story. Combining the settings and storylines of the two previous books, Mortalis and Transcendence, Salvatore succeeds in wrapping up many storylines.
In the northern kingdom of Honce-the-Bear, Aydrian, the son of Pony and Elbryan, is consolidating his rule while striking out in new directions. He sends forces to the southern land of Behren, where Brynn Dharielle threw off the tyranny of the capital Jacintha and plunged that kingdom into chaos. Aydrian's forces are perhaps too ambitious, and Brynn's To-Gai-Ru get involved with resisting the northerners, along with her faithful companions Pagonel (an excellent character reminiscent of other Salvatore characters) and Agradeleous the Dragon.
In the north, Pony seeks to warn her friends of the danger of her son, after he let her go free. She also seeks something of retribution from the elves for their misguided rearing of him.
Prince Midalis, the rightful king after Aydrian the usurper killed Midalis' brother, is rallying allies to oppose the ambitious boy. His distance from the seat of power and lack of numbers does not fare well for him.
The elves are faced with a danger unlike any they have ever faced, in a demon-corrupted boy of incalculable power who knows where they live and hates them. The result of his vengeful attacks comes back to haunt him.
There are MANY instances of remarkable and heroic self-sacrifice, though too much success for those who work evil. There is a gathering in this book of heroes, a gathering perhaps unmatched since Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring (Please note that I am not making a comparison here, simply trying to cite a previous example of a large band of larger-than-life heroes that readers might identify). Opposing them, however, is an array of evil that in many ways equals them. Miscalculations, overestimations, and plain old mistakes combine with derring-do, cunning and courage to bring about the resolution of the many conflicts in this storyline. Note that many threads are not completely resolved, perhaps being saved for a new series.
There were points in this book that I thought were too like Mortalis, in which evil simply seemed unstoppable and would win the day. The glimmers of light through that dark cloud are too few. I can say that the final 250 pages or so were riveting. The stage had been set and the action and scheming were nearly unrelenting. There are some telling losses, but also some great victories. There was a surprising number of grammar errors and typos, which I felt did detract slightly from the enjoyment, but near the end I did not notice them as the story was too gripping. The ending is so heartwrenching that I cannot really describe it.

"Just Roo Avery, who did the same starting with a small wagon shipping company who eventually moved to ships that ended up helping the crown during times of war.
Ancient Prophecy (Targa Trilogy, Book 3) OverviewAges ago, elves and dwarves unknowingly migrated between Universes via a Junction. Jenneva and Egam believe they have found a Junction and plan a trip with Alexander to test the theory and investigate the origins of the elves and dwarves. Because they believe that the perennial animosity between the two races is due to misunderstandings about their histories, the mages include the prince of elves and the prince of dwarves in the group. Trouble begins at the very start of the journey as Egam falters going through the Junction, awakening an old nemesis, the evil demon, Alutar. It appears that the excursion will not just clarify history, but also actually change it. As the group discovers they are trapped in the new Universe, the shocking truth of the real history of the races is overshadowed by impending doom as an ancient prophecy begins to unfold. Krondor the Betrayal:: Book One of the Riftwar Legacy ReviewThe problem with this book is that it reads like a computer game. It lacks depth of character and atmosphere; the conversation is stilted, the achievements superhuman. The plot is formulaic, and obviously leads from fact finding to consequential action. If you played the game (which I haven't) you probably get to "practice" killing the bad guys - if you fail, you can always start again from where you last saved. The game, no doubt, has some level of challenge to it. The book doesn't.
I can see what Feist was trying to do here - continue a line of books with what must be one of my favourite characters, Jimmy the Hand. Put James in a tight spot and he'll invariably get out. Tragically, the squire totally lacks any hint of personality in this book and the two sequels. Mr Feist, as a WRITER, could have used a little more imagination to pull the reader into a fantastic story. Instead he follows the rather basic plot line of a simple computer game.
Sadly, this sub-series does not improve with time. It gets worse. I'm currently reading book three: Krondor, Tear of the Gods. It's so bad, I'm considering not finishing it at all (which would be the first for a Feist book for me ... I love the guy).
The first book and even the second at least deal with elements roughly defined within Feist's series on Midkemia: the Oracle, the stone at Sethanon, dark elves, etc. The third borders on the ludricous - vampires in Midkemia? ... honestly!... Obviously, the game developers took over and Mr. Feist took a back seat in his own world.
I'm actually quite outraged that this series was published at all. They should have left it as a game and not bothered with this half-hearted attempt at a book. I've never quite felt so cheated of my money before --- and that is probably Mr Feist's greatest accomplishment in this trilogy.Krondor the Betrayal:: Book One of the Riftwar Legacy Overview

Once a Hero ReviewI started reading this book very critically because I feel that a lot of the Star Wars / Star Trek / Dragonlance / Forgotten Realms / RPG novels are extremely poorly written. Michael Stackpole has a background writing RPG games (very good ones, I might add), Star Wars and Battletech books. Despite myself, I wasn't expecting much, but what I got was one of the very **best** books I've ever read. Michael Stackpole writes rings around all but the best and the greatest of writers, with whom he stands proudly shoulder to shoulder. "Once A Hero" has started me on an addiction for Michael Stackpole's **stunning** fantasy. I've torn through "Talion: Revenant" and "A Hero Born" as quickly as I could get my hands on them and was not disappointed. Sadly, this book, "Once A Hero" is out of print, although it's readily available online used. Michael Stackpole has other fantasy books in print and if you're a lover of quality, engaging, high-spirited fantasy then you'd be mad not to seek them out. Shadow Chaser: Book Two of The Chronicles of Siala ReviewShamans, Wizards, Goblins, Dwarfs, Elves, Orcs, a reluctant Hero (slightly tarnished)... Typical Ingredients for this type of fare.....however it's quality of the chef that takes these ingredients and make a superb meal.
There was excellent development of both main and secondary characters, i found myself extremely curious about that Jester. The world building was excellent and various story tangents will keep the reader thoroughly engaged. What was a bit disconcerting is that no matter the time spent in developing a character, it does not stop them from dying....
I cannot see this series stopping at the 3rd book!!!

The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel ReviewThis book is actually a compilation of three novels; "Sheep Farmer's Daughter", "Divided Allegiance" and "Oath of Gold". I like to think that these books started the popular trend in fantasy, of featuring women in heroic roles. Paks, (the heroine in question), manages to be a better soldier than most while still being sensitive to her feelings and friends.
Unlike many works of fantasy, Moon is more interested in the characters and their struggles and triumphs than in the fantastic creations of her world. I'm not saying that her world is not well rendered, it is, but it is the people in this story that demand the reader's attention. They are real, emotional beings with strengths, flaws and inconsistencies, just like the rest of us.
There is also a surprising amount of military detail in the story. In fact it taught me a thing or two about medieval fighting both from a lone warrior standpoint and that of an army.
Fair warning to those who intend to read this series; start on the Friday night. At least that way you won't jeopardise your job by coming in without any sleep.The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel OverviewIgnoring her father's plans for her, Paksenarrion leaves her family and sets off for the army, where her heroic restoration of a lost ruler to his throne will make her a legend.
