The Kobold Wizard's Dildo of Enlightenment +2 (an adventure for 3-6 players, levels 2-5) ReviewThis book is enormously entertaining, funny, and enjoyable. It is obvious that Mellick has a genuine understanding of, and affection for role-playing games and the people who play them.
In a nutshell, the plot describes a group of fictional characters in a fantasy role-playing game who have become aware of their fictional existence, and must struggle to free themselves from the whims of their players.
The story takes place on two levels; a group of undersexed, maladjusted teen players, and the fictional characters they have invented to represent them within the game itself. This proves to be an excellent device for character development, as the fictional characters serve to illustrate the wish fulfillment fantasies as well as the insecurities of the players. There are other interesting parallels; As adolescents, the players are in many ways living lives controlled by authority figures, occupying prescribed roles just as their fictional characters are. At its best moments, the novel briefly touches on issues of free will and existentialism, albeit in a delightfully immature way.

Devilish ReviewI'd read my way through My Lady Notorious, Something Wicked, and Tempting Fortune, with increasing dissatisfaction, and hadn't intended to read Secrets of the Night or Devilish. However, a friend with whom I often share books recommended Devilish to me, so I felt obliged to give it the old college try.
I blazed my way through it in one night (by no means a record, but uncommon with books I don't feel strongly about) and when I was done I wished there were more. Sigh, drool, melt.
But I've been surprised and confused by the amount of negative reviews of the book, to the point of wondering if I read the same book everyone else had. Bey cold? Diana whining? Bey disappointing? Perish the thought.
But then again, the Marquess of Rothgar has been a presence in the entire Malloren series, from My Lady Notorious onward, leaving plenty of fertile ground for readers to build their own idea about him (indeed, part of my dissatisfaction with the other three books that I read stemmed largely from the fact that Rothgar consistently overshadowed the heroes). So it's not really surprising that the book might not have lived up to what many readers hoped for Bey.
The other complaints (dealing largely with two issues; Diana's suitability as a heroine and the lack of sex scenes) are largely a matter of taste. I don't like the heroines of the books I read to be sweet, simpering virgins with hearts of gold (another problem I had with some of the Malloren books, particularly Tempting Fortune); I like them to be strong, stubborn, and independent, which Diana was. I don't think that a gentle, delicate, naive young woman could have had the courage or the resolve to keep pushing Bey until he had to give up some of his control.
Nor do I read this sort of book for the sex scenes; I read it for the plot, and for the romance. Therefore I wasn't disappointed with the lack of sex, and I feel that much more would have been hard to justify, considering that Rothgar's determination not to have children has been well-established.
As for what I liked about the book--most everything. I appreciated that Jo Beverley didn't resort to tired old cliches (silly misunderstandings keeping hero and heroine apart, etc). I heartily approve of the fact that Bey acknowledged his love for Diana relatively early on in the book, instead of holding out until some great crisis puts her life in danger and forces him to admit how he feels. Bey and Diana had rational (if occasionally misguided) reasons for staying apart, a nice change from many romance novels. Diana made a solid, if largely unremarkable, heroine; Bey carries the book, walking the line between strength and romance. All of the parts of the book that melted my heart centered around him and were usually from his point of view.
Devilish is a book I'll keep and read over and over again, a sure sign of a good, satisfying read.Devilish Overview

'Twas the Night Before Christmas 21st Century Edition ReviewI think serendipity is that thing where you're looking for one thing and you stumble on another. I was looking for a gag gift/stocking stuffer for a friend for the holidays, and I came across this gem. If only the truth is funny and laughter is the best medicine, "Twas the Night Before Christmas, 21st Century Edition" is a whoop-ass dose of truth serum. Being a huge devotee of that near-extinct form of comedy that is satire, I wasn't prepared to find something that not only made me laugh out loud, but I could tell is going to spawn laughs after numerous readings. The text of this send-up is layered with references that actually do more than just play on the surface of the joke they're making--in other words, it's got dimension. It braids images that traffic in homespun holiday cheer while cracking your funny bone with captions written to inflict whiplash they are so sharply drawn. It swings effortlessly between lofty high-brow references (William Safire) that get their requisite share of chuckles, to low-brow humor so pungent you'll remember why you don't like your frat-boy cousin Dirk, and everything in-between. And there is a faux Maxim magazine cover that elevates the form to dizzying heights of comedic lunacy, something this book does effortlessly. And if that isn't enough, it actually has an ending that buttons the proceedings perfectly. So, I'll buy two copies. One for my friend. Wild Fire ReviewNelson DeMille's The Lion's Game is one of the best thrillers ever written, but Wild Fire lags far behind. If you are a DeMille fan, this may be exactly the thing you like, but it put me to sleep. First, there is no plot. From the book's dust jacket and early pages, you know that a wealthy oil man wants to wipe out the people of the Middle East by exploding black-market, nuclear bombs in two American cities, triggering a massive nuclear response onto the Middle East from the United States (Project Wild Fire). We know that it won't happen, so we already know that someone will stop it. Second, the book has endless conversation that drags on forever. Third, we again have Detective John Corey and FBI Agent Kate Mayfield investigating the case, but this is not the capable John Corey that we saw in The Lion's Game. This John Corey is a wisecracking buffoon, and an entire book of his one-liners becomes really tiresome. The story's end is exciting and ties up loose ends nicely. This is the first time that I did not like a DeMille book, but I suspect that his next will create the usual excitement.Wild Fire Overview

The character Keene, is funny and is always getting into trouble. Not only is this book funny and in some parts, realistic, but also includes fantasy, magic, battle scenes and friendship. I really enjoyed the book. It is a great book for middle-school kids such as myself, and adults too. Some more parts I enjoyed were when there were battle scenes that included bows and arrows, elven swords, dragons and even a few ogres. I think that kids would want to stay up late reading this book. I did. The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel ReviewThis book is actually a compilation of three novels; "Sheep Farmer's Daughter", "Divided Allegiance" and "Oath of Gold". I like to think that these books started the popular trend in fantasy, of featuring women in heroic roles. Paks, (the heroine in question), manages to be a better soldier than most while still being sensitive to her feelings and friends.
Unlike many works of fantasy, Moon is more interested in the characters and their struggles and triumphs than in the fantastic creations of her world. I'm not saying that her world is not well rendered, it is, but it is the people in this story that demand the reader's attention. They are real, emotional beings with strengths, flaws and inconsistencies, just like the rest of us.
There is also a surprising amount of military detail in the story. In fact it taught me a thing or two about medieval fighting both from a lone warrior standpoint and that of an army.
Fair warning to those who intend to read this series; start on the Friday night. At least that way you won't jeopardise your job by coming in without any sleep.The Deed of Paksenarrion: A Novel OverviewIgnoring her father's plans for her, Paksenarrion leaves her family and sets off for the army, where her heroic restoration of a lost ruler to his throne will make her a legend.

Originally published in 1993, this book is the first of a series of five (so far) dealing with the Malloren family and its dictatorial head, Rothgar. Before reading the highly-acclaimed fifth book, "Devilish," I decided to acquire the first four and read them in order. (I do love books with recurring characters!) Bedlam's Bard ReviewThis was the first work (actually works, since it's two books in one) that I'd read that Lackey had a hand in that was set in contemporary society, and I found what I have come to like in Lackey's stories -- how someone (in this case, the fabulously irresponsible and troubled latent bard Eric Banyon) comes to grips with a budding and unexpected talent, which is both blessing and curse. Eric is a gifted musician who busks and plays the RenFair circuit to keep his freedom/avoid responsibility, but when he inadvertantly wakes the sleeping noble elf Korendil, Eric's life is irreversably altered. The mix of magic and mundane (to borrow a Rowlingism) is done nicely in both books, particularly with respect to the L. A. musical underground in the first book and the central plot of the second. As in all of the Lackey books I've read, the problems characters face are presented in both day-to-day and heroic perspectives, with as much emphasis placed on personal issues as on magical battles. I found both stories to be the usual very good read characteristic of Lackey stories, although I confess particular interest since I'm a musician and a lover of RenFairs.Bedlam's Bard OverviewWhen Eric Banyon's flute playing accidentally frees elven noble Korendil from a magical prison, he suddenly finds himself caught up in a desperate fight against an evil elf lord who plans to conquer all of California.

Daughter of the Drow (Forgotten Realms: Starlight and Shadows, Book 1) ReviewWithout taking anything away from RA, (without whom I probably wouldn't have heard about the FR world) I would like say how refreshing it is to see a complex drow. While Drizzt is definitely thoughtful and easy to love, he always does the right thing. Lireal however, does not reject everything Drow, and this leads to an interesting character mesh.
As Lireal is chased out of Menzo, she discovers how many options there truly are in Toril. She travels with a virtous human warrior and the romance that develops between them is not only free from the moral condescension of Drizzt's love life, but filled with doubt and uncertainty. By the end of the book I found myself really rooting for the two to get together.
The two main characters themselves were great. I really cared about them. As mentioned above, Lireal doesn't always do the right thing. She uses her looks to her advantage, she doesn't reject Lolth, she's not above kicking men in the groin.
On the other hand she isn't evil. You can follow her internal debates as her Menzo heritage tells her to handle a situation one way, but some inner feeling disagrees. Overall she comes across as a fun-loving adventure seeker who doesn't know any better. Fyodor (her traveling buddy) is constantly trying to reform her, but reserves the moral judgements that he could have applied.
This book is great. The characters, their interaction, the alternate Drow gods introduced, this was a fine work by Elaine Cunningham and the next book "Tangled Webs" is a great follow-up so you don't have to worry about being left hanging.Daughter of the Drow (Forgotten Realms: Starlight and Shadows, Book 1) OverviewBeautiful as she is deadly, Liriel Baenre flits throught the shadows of Menzoberranzan, city of the dark elves. Amid treachery and murder that are the drow's daily fare, she feels something calling to her ... something beyond this dusky world far removed from the sun. Yet as she ventures toward the surface and the lands of light, enemies pursue her unceasingly.And one enemy amy offer her the only hope of salvation.

Betrayal is the first of four comics in "A Daughter of Kings." It tells the story of Delinna Alder and Great Kingdom years before the Kingdoms and Dragons books begin. The story takes place in Imtal, mostly.
Delinna is one of King Andrew's daughters. The story begins with Xith's return to Imtal in the middle of the night. He has been on a long search and now returns with the object of his search -- one of the orbs of power. Delinna hopes the orb can answer her questions about a prophecy, but the orb has other plans.
With plenty of striking artwork, this is an amazing opening installment and well worth it. Rise of the Fallen (Ruin Mist: Dawn of the Ages, Book 1) ReviewStanek is a powerful storyteller. From the beginning, you know that this story is going to be different. The opening pages pull you into the realms of the Hundred Worlds. You are right there for the fall of Elvemere and from there it only gets better.
The characters are awesome to meet. You find those that are in the background are as interesting as the main ones and you get enough details about all of them to recognize and understand them.
Raistin is an elf of the conquered Elvemere. His people are enslaved and are made to do the bidding of the drakon enforcers as they unearth ancient artifacts in a far off world. When Raistin encounters a werg, he is pulled into a world he doesn't understand and the reader comes along with him for an amazing ride.
Although the story is mainly about the Elvemere, Stanek creates whole peoples and nations and seemlessly weaves their stories into the book. By the end you know the jurin, werg, drakon, and others as well as you know the elves.
If you're unsure about this one -- or if the thought of reading about elves and dragons makes you ask yourself, "Why?" dive on in. I'm certain you'll find that the water is near perfect. Keeper Martin's Tale (Ruin Mist Chronicles, Book 1) ReviewStumbling onto something that's really great is rare, it's definitely a WOW moment when you do. That's definitely the case here. Robert Stanek introduces the mesmorizing world of Ruin Mist, characters that quickly become friends and a wonderful story. I kept turning page after page. If you're looking for a good fantasy with atmosphere and character, don't look any further. Robert Stanek's awesome books will do. You get real heroes and heroines, not all powerful cartoon cutouts. Adrina, grieving over the tragic loss of her mother. Vilmos, a troubled youth who carries a forbidden power that could bring death to everyone around him. Valam, fierce yet gentle, a prince in all senses of the word. Xith, mysterious, dark, powerful, supernatural. Seth with psychic powers and the moves of a first-class ninja warrior. Emel, the bumbling young sergeant who rides a black stallion called Ebony Lightning. The charactres alone make this a worthwhile read.
Under the surface, there's a great deal of complexity--more than you might expect in a first book. This is epic fantasy in the truest sense. It's really three stories intertwined:
. Adrina's story, the story of a princess in a dying kingdom. Her truest companion is Emel. They share a secretive past that is hinted it.
. Vilmos's story, the story of a boy of 12 who has dark dreams.
. Seth and Galan's story, the story of the elves of the reaches who must begin a desperate journey to the world of men.
I LOVE this fantasy series! I enjoyed reading the book immensely. The plot is intriguing and fascinating and keeps you guessing. You don't always have everything you need to know who is who and what is what. There's a bit of mystery and subtelty. Robert Stanek did an amazing job with this, especially when it comes to plot, pace and structure. Everything unfolds smoothly. It is a good strong start to something wonderful. I would agree with other reviews, this is not a clear straightforward journey. You have to think and you have to be patient. Scenes change, things go back and forth, but trust me it all closes wonderfully! No doubts about it, it also sets the stage brilliantly for what's to come.
To those who say the writing is simple, I say this. Great writers make their work seem effortless. There is an intricate and complex story here. It all that flows beautifully, events sweep characters along, Stanek works details with wonderful skill. When I finished, I truly believed this was a "tale". The tale is in the telling. If you are looking for an engrossing read, buy this and Stanek's other books. Deliverance (Ruin Mist: A Daughter of Kings, Comic #2) ReviewLoved it! Anyone who doubts Stanek's prowess as a fantasy writer need only pick up Betrayal and Deliverance to have those doubts erased. Deliverance is the second of four comics in "A Daughter of Kings" and the comics tell the story of Delinna Alder, the Orbs of Power, and how Xith came to be in the Kingdoms.
The story continues to be tightly written with dialogue that sizzles. The characters come to life and any fan of the "Kingdoms and the Elves" books will be glad to have many questions answered at long last. Any one not of fan of the books may find this accessible as well as it doesn't assume any prior knowlege of the books, not sure though it you'd want to have the answers to some of the secrets ahead of time though.
Since Betrayal starts 10 years before the events in the "Kingdoms and the Elves" books, Adrina and Emel are young children, so the story focuses on Delina, the second oldest of the Alder children. Xith's return to the Kingdoms after a long search for one of the mysterious artifacts known as an Orb of Power is what sets the story in motion.
After that it is a fast, twisty ride moving between Delinna's lovers Ansh and Jarom, Kingdom intrigues, the entrance of Edward the troant and Keeper Martin, and the appearance of the dragons.
Getting to see the books as comics was a dream come true! What a fantastic ending to the Service of Dragons. From the minute I started reading I was enthralled with the story.
The author does a great job of tying together the various story points. I loved many of the characters and ached over their trials and admired the growth of Adrina and Vilmos and others. I usually don't write reviews, but I was so disappointed by this book, I felt I had too. Bad grammar, boring characters, jumps in the plot that make NO sense, and terrible formatting. The illustrations where not great either. The book is only 140 or so pages, and I have had to force myself through them. Save your money, don't buy this book.
