Shadowrun Book #1: Born to Run Reviewi'm not exactly sure why they restarted this series, number-wise that is. perhaps to introduce new characters like kellan,lothan, silver max and the like. i am only four or five books short of reading (for the second time in some cases) the entire first run of the shadowrun series. it's tight as far as continuity goes, it makes reference to the "night of rage" and goblinization and other historical events in the shadowrun history. stephen kenson "keeps it real" in the true SR fashion. this book is accessible to all fans, new and old. this books does a good job explaining SR lingo,lifestyle and metatypes in an interesting manner, exciting to the new reader, but yet not redundant to the experienced SR reader. kenson does it again!! up there with charette !!! buy it !!Shadowrun Book #1: Born to Run OverviewEarth, 2063. Long-dormant magical forces have reawakened, and the creatures of mankind's legends and nightmares have come out of hiding. Megacorporations act as the new world superpowers, and the dregs of society fight for their own power. Sliding through the cracks in between are shadowrunners-underworld professionals who will do anything for a profit, and anything it takes to get the job done. Kellan Colt has come to Seattle to make a name for herself. Prospero Lost: Prospero's Daughter, Book I ReviewThe cover is certainly very snazzy, but it's a bit misleading: it implies a kind of evocative, lush-language'd Dunsany-esque sort of story. The which this isn't: if fantasy had space operas, that's what it'd be. Which doesn't mean there aren't moments of magical beauty--there are--but they're the leaven (and the story rises higher for them), not the meat.
Imagine that Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, was actually one of his histories--a secret history ruthlessly suppressed by the Dan-Brownian Orbis Humanis society. Imagine that Miranda's story didn't end with her marriage to Ferdinand, but began when her magician father bound her in service to the goddess Euronyme to gain immortality for himself and his family; that Prospero didn't destroy his books but transformed them into the tools of power that would grant his children dominion over the powers of the earth.
Now start the story four hundred years later, with a cool and wealthy CEO-magician finding a mysterious message written in secret phoenix-fire letters: "I have woken evil powers! Warn the family! Beware the Shadowed Ones!" This is Miranda Prospero, whose global corporation acts as intermediary between the world of myth, demons, angels, powers and principalities and an unwitting humanity which has for centuries been kept (mostly) safe from them. The corporate jet (for example) is magic-enhanced, which helps (a bit) when the dragon attacks. The adventures begin when the icily virgin Miss Prospero discovers that it's not enough to send one of her airy indentured servants (the Aerie Ones themselves would say "slaves") to investigate her father's possible disappearance--the woken power (or powers) attack her in her home, destroying part of it and stealing a potent weapon. Thus begins her world-spanning quest to find her father, and warn her estranged brothers. Monster island, gates to hell, faery revels--it's all here.
What I enjoyed most about the book was, of course, the secret world--I love how the insane Prospero family's story reveals the magical world underlying our own, and how Lamplighter interweaves both pagan and Christian mythology. In one chapter we have the teind to Hell juxtaposed with Santa Claus--and it works. I love all the supporting cast, especially Miranda's hard-boiled detective Mab, a North wind enfleshed to serve Prospero, Inc, who's lived as bond-servant in the U.S. long enough to have developed some revolutionary ideas about their master-servant relationship. Miranda I like rather less well: but as an immortal young woman, emotionally trapped as the 16-year-old bride abandoned by her fiancé at the altar, sworn to virginity as the price of her powers--and quite possibly bound as terribly as the aerie servants to serve Prospero's whims--she's clearly got a boat-load of maturing to do. Right now I don't think she deserves either of her would-be demon lovers (even if neither one is as he seems)
Fair warning: this is only the first book of a three book series. The good news? Books two and three are already written: they just need to work their way through the editing/publishing process.

Legends of the Dragonrealm, Vol. II ReviewWay back in the heady days of my youth, I read to escape the world around me. Devouring books like candy. This series was one of the many I was involved in. At the time I was amazed by it, Incredibly mesmerized by the fantasy world this was all set in.
I want to explain. I have a love for worlds. For universes. I have read and been enamored of thousands of different realms, and the Dragon realms was one such. It is a constantly evolving and increasingly fascinating world, with it's own history, it's own rules and all kinds of interesting characters and places.
I'm telling you all of this because this book is made up of that back story. It explains the existence of many of the different species and characters. The first volume was of "Current" Events, this is more explanatory. The stories are still fascinating, the events exciting. To me though, this is far more thrilling. An entire volume of fascinating events, explaining things that I had questions about from the books in the first novel!
This has plunged me back to my childhood! I remember long nights escaping into this realm, but most importantly, I remember why it grabbed me in the first place! With enemies drawing closer than they ever have before, her palette of choices is fast becoming slim to none. It's back to Cincinnati after her desperate attempt to save her pixie partner's son and her ex-boyfriend, Nick. Rachel harbors a rather nasty curse trapped in a bone prison, the focus, which threatens to twist the realities of Weres and vampires alike, both of whom squabble over it like children. With Trent vying for it, someone killing for it and our favorite demon Al lusting after it, Rachel once again has to find a way to undo another problem forced upon her. As the delicate balance between her and Ivy begins to come to a roiling boil, it's all the earth witch can do to stay this side of good, acceptable magic. With her special blood and desire to help others though, it's near impossible for her to deflect the trouble that comes looking for her with a vengeance. Unable to unload the focus on just anyone, she'll have to decide who's the best choice...and none of them are looking particularly stellar.
The first of Harrison's series to be offered in hardback, it's a worthy installment for it, tipping the scales even further towards excellent. For a Few Demons More wraps up some of the problems that Rachel has been having over the course of the other books while of course unraveling others even further. Trent comes back into play and it's a totally different side of him than readers have read before. Ceri, the powerful ex-demon familiar, shows Rachel just how much she respects her and Rachel's pack mate David takes on a major role. The demon Newt is back and we get some interesting information and insights into that character too, though whether they help or hinder the outlook on Newt is the reader's choice. Ivy's dilemma with Piscary is excruciatingly dealt with and it was a struggle at certain points to get past the powerful emotions Harrison has written surrounding Ivy and Rachel. As always, Harrison manages to insert a shocking twist, one I never saw coming, involving Rachel and another of her closest friends. For a Few Demons More is inundated with its fair share of pain, angst and utter despair and readers most certainly may feel closer to Rachel than ever before because of it. It's not without it's glimmer of hope though and some very interesting new characters are introduced that I hope will continue to make appearances in the next book, most notably a mysterious organization of demon practitioners and Dr. Ford Miller, a psychiatrist for the FIB (Federal Inderlander Bureau, the human division to deal with Inderlanders). In the end, as much as Rachel has had to deal with, she's never appeared stronger to me. As always, the once-a-year release of Harrison's Hallows series just can't come fast enough and I only hope that there will be many, many more to come.For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5) Overview

Finder: A Novel of the Borderlands ReviewI mean, really. I never thought it was possible to crush on a fictional character, until I read "Finder." If I could somehow slip into Bookworld--where all the worlds in books are real--I'd head straight for Bordertown (after a lengthy visit to Pern, perhaps) so I could marry Orient. I mean, he's perfect! He's handsome, he's friends with the best mechanic in the universe (vive Tick Tick!), you'd never lose anything again, and hey! he's even Jewish. Dig this: we have here the only man who could possibly locate the socks that disappear in the dryer! Hmmmm. OK, sex drives aside, this is a fun book. Bordertown: a sleek, hip world where magic melds with technology and bohemians dabble with royalty. (Kinda makes me homesick for NYC, mmmm?) Anyway, the Elves have returned...and they're cool, not a jot like the deified Tolkien-esque elves found in epic fantasies nowdays. Orient, our hero, is a fugitive from the regular world, who has found Bordertown a haven from his dark, secret past. He's friends with Tick Tick, a runaway elven princess who is the best mechanic known to man, a werewolf named Wolfboy (who stars in "Elsewhere" and "Never Never" by Will Shetterly, which were fun but not great), and a determined, mysterious cop named Sunny Rico. Anyway, the book centers around a mystery--some strange disease is turning humans into elves and killing real elves--and how Orient comes to grips with his past. Fast-paced, sleek dialogue, interesting characters, cool locale, strong plot, and Orient. Definately a great find! (Sorry about that last 8-)!)Finder: A Novel of the Borderlands Overview

DYING MOON ReviewI edit novels for LBF Books and I first encountered DYING MOON in a batch of novels that were submitted for publication. To me, this was clearly the standout of the batch and the one that I recommended for publication. Shawn Oetzel seamlessly blends crime drama and fantasy in his debut novel. As the tale unfolds, he explores the clash of elven and human cultures in the modern world and spices it up with enough action that it'll keep you turning the pages.
In the novel, an Elf called Dre Fao'lain is intent on the destruction of all his kind and enters into the world of 21st century Los Angeles to perform the magical ceremony necessary to accomplish his mission. Leaving a series of bodies in his wake, the Elf is pursued by the LAPD. In the meantime the Elves send Kalen Or'Wain, Captain of the Elven Royal Guard, to stop him. He teams up with a special agent who knows about the Elven world, an officer from the LAPD and even a street gang to stop Dre Fao'lain. I really enjoyed the way Shawn Oetzel merged two seemingly disparate genres in this novel.

All Night Awake ReviewPart two of a trilogy, this novel looks at the life of a struggling young poet in Elizabethan England by the name of William Shakespeare.
Will is having a very hard time making it as a poet in London. He is not just a "struggling" poet, he is, literally, a starving poet. Will makes the acquaintance of Christopher Marlowe, the current favorite poet of Elizabeth I. Christopher has attracted the attention of the authorities, a sure route to a short life span. Back in his university days, evidently he was not diligent enough in reporting a classmate who made an unpleasant remark about the monarchy. Therefore, he has to be a sympathizer. Facing lots of torture on the rack, Christopher spins a tale about this huge conspiracy he has uncovered. He has to give the authorities somebody, so he plans on implicating Shakespeare. There is no conspiracy, and even if there was, Shakespeare is the last person who would be involved in it.
Both men received their poetry gifts through exposure to the world of faerie. An elf named Sylvanus has "gone bad" and is heading to London to create havoc. The King of faerie, Quicksilver, has no choice but to go after him. He changes into his alter ego, a beautiful woman named Silver, with whom Shakespeare has already cheated on his wife (she is back home in Stratford). Meantime, back in faerie, it is as if all of the magical energy is disappearing; elves and fairies are dying by the hundreds. Ariel, the Queen of Faerie, has no choice but to go to London and look for her husband. Also, Sylvanus takes over Marlowe's body; at night, he becomes a sort of humanoid beast who likes to disembowel people. Does Shakespeare stay out of the hands of the authorities? Does faerie get all of its magical energy removed?
This is an interesting speculation about the life of William Shakespeare before he became a Famous Person. Of course, Shakespeare fans will love it, and so will fantasy fans. It's worth reading.

Little Fur #3: A Mystery of Wolves ReviewWhat if you were captured by a band of wolves and all you relied on to help was a half elf, half troll girl and a wolf from the zoo? What if a human sprite joined with a wolf sprite? And what if, just what if, a fjord sprite asked you to retrieve one little mirror from a dangerous group of wolves living on a high mountain?
Little Fur, the elf troll, preparing for the Great Weaving, asks the wise Sett Owl to help to find her friend Ginger, the cat. He says to find the Mystery of Wolves, so as she leaves the protection of the Old Ones, she heads up the mountains to find the Mystery of Wolves and to rescue Ginger. Even I wouldn¡¦t go all the way up into the mountains to rescue a cat. But not for Little Fur, Ginger was her best cat friend. So with the mountains right underneath Little Fur, a fjord sprite and the dangerous peaks and hills stand in the way of Little Fur getting to Ginger and the Mystery of Wolves. With the help of an old wolf from the zoo, Little Fur is in for an adventurous fantasy tale!
My favorite part of the story was near the end, so I¡¦m not spoiling the end of a great story. When a king, still standing from years before Little Fur was born, brought sorrow into everything. Until then, a great sacrifice was made that no one will forget.
This story is a great story to read, especially if you are a fantasy reader, even though it is hard to remember who is who since there a so many names from the last few books of Little Fur (if you have read them, which I bet you have not read). Isobelle Carmody tells a fantastic tale from the forest of the Old Ones, to the zoo of a city, to the mountains east of the city, where humans doesn¡¦t even know Little Fur exists. Isobelle Carmody, one of Australia¡¦s most popular fantasy authors, with another story of Little Fur coming up in 2009, has done herself with another fantastic story of Little Fur, a half elf, half troll girl in Little Fur, A Mystery of Wolves.

The Essential Bordertown (Borderlands) ReviewGoing by other reader reviews of this book, some fans of the series were disappointed by The Essential Bordertown--they felt the stories "just weren't the same" or something. Of course they weren't the same! It has a different character than other books in the series, but that's only to be expected from an anthology, and I enjoyed it immensely. One of its best features, to my mind, is the way "guidebook" excerpts are placed between the stories--for those unfamiliar with Bordertown, they provide excellent background material, and for fans, they're full of little jokes and references to familiar locations/people/events. They also make good transitions from one story to the next. The book contains 13 stories (how apropos) by Patricia A. McKillip, Midori Snyder, Delia Sherman, Donnard Sturgis, Ellen Kushner, Michael Korolenko, Elisabeth Kushner, Charles de Lint, Caroline Stevermer, Steven Brust, Ellen Steiber, Micole Sudberg, and Felicity Savage, of which four particularly struck me.
I loved Patricia A. McKillip's "Oak Hill" for many reasons, but one of them is that its protagonist reminded me of myself in junior high--a lonely girl with bad skin looking for magick. I particularly liked the fact that the girl has no terrible reason to come to Bordertown; she just wants something better--something more--than what she has. McKillip's prose is beautiful as ever, and the ending, though of course I won't give it away, is simple and powerful. "Dragon Child" by Midori Snyder is largely set in Dragontown, which has always been one of my favorite areas of Bordertown. Eli, half elvin and half human, escapes from his cruel elvin father to Bordertown, where he struggles to fully free himself from the aristrocratic father who has controlled him all his life. The story doesn't offer any easy answer to Eli's problems; it may be about a boy who blurs the border between the World and Faerie, but it's realistic.
"Changeling" by Elisabeth Kushner I admit I was already predisposed to like--young lesbians desperately trying to build a happy life for themselves have always had a special place in my heart. "Oak Hill" shows Bordertown as a place to run to; "Changeling," like "Dragon Child," shows it as a place to run away to. Selkie/Seal (neither her given name, of course; people who come to Bordertown frequently give themselves new names, in the hopes of new lives) is trying to find a place where her "difference" won't stand out, and comes to Bordertown--where it might not be easier, but it might also be better. The final member of my top four, Ellen Steiber's "Argentine," is about an elvin girl who didn't run anywhere--she was banished, her memory erased, to Bordertown, where she does what she seems to do best: steals. Argentine seeks out things that matter to people, and takes them, to feel the love they contain. But no thief's luck lasts forever, as the ghost of a dead man is only too happy to remind her when she takes his living lover's necklace. Steiber makes Argentine a sympathetic character, despite the things she does, and Roberto, already dead, is tragic. This story makes me cry almost every time I read it.
The Essential Bordertown definitely holds its own within the series, and I highly recommend it--and if you like it, you should try to find the others, although some are out of print and hard to get ahold of.The Essential Bordertown (Borderlands) Overview

This book starts off with John Mallory, a down on his luck private investigator, spending New Year's Eve alone in his dreary Manhattan office. His wife has run off with his ex-partner, the mafia has put a price on his head, and just when it seemed things couldn't get any cheerier, a little green elf shows up in his office who, to Mallory's surprise, is not an alcohol-based hallucination. It seems that the elf has a job for Mallory... and by dawn the next day, the two will have journeyed to an alternate world which is identical to, and at the same time nothing like, the Manhattan that Mallory has come to know. Resnick's style is dark and ironic, while still maintaining a deeper level of humor than found in most books of this genre. Con & Conjure (Raine Benares) ReviewThis is the fifth book in the Raine Benares, and if you like fantasy and a strong female heroine this book is for you. It also contains a ton of action (really it's hard to catch your breath) with a good bit of humor. I found myself laughing out loud in several scenes.
In this book, Raine is still trying to get rid of the magical rock (aka Saghred) that she picked up in the first book (Magic Lost Trouble Found) The people working against her are doing their best to start a war between goblins and elves.
Some interesting new characters become a big part of the book namely Mago, Raine's cousin & expert thief, and Rache, Raine's ex-fiance & an assassin. Both characters bring a lot of comic relief. We also get to see a lot more of some of my favorites Imala (Chief goblin intelligence officer), Michael (Head of Guardians), and Tam (Chief goblin magical enforcer).
The good news is that some of Raine's enemies do get what they deserve only after creating a lot of trouble for Raine. The bad news is that as other reviewers mentioned there is not a lot of development for the overall series plot. However, I love the characters so much that I really don't mind that this is the fifth book and the author has already said there will be a sequel.
I would recommend reading the first four books before this one because 1) the plots are fairly intricate with a lot of characters & 2) because they are awesome especially #4 Bewitched & Betrayed. However, the author usually gives back story information that will get you through.
I have LOVED this series since I picked up the first book on a whim. My recommendation - buy all 5 books.

In this , much of the action occurs on the other side where readers learn of a complicated caste system. The story line is fast-paced and the supernatural species seem real. Although understandably so with the family tragedy that occurred while performing their duty, Jenni whines a bit much (should have been in Green Bay where she could wear a cheesy hat), which in fairness comes across as genuine. Still overall aptly titled Enchanted No More is an enchanting quest fantasy.

Selling Out (Quantum Gravity, Book 2) ReviewIf Amazon would let me I'd give this book a 4.5. The culture and descriptions of Demonia were great. Sometimes I felt that if I closed my eyes I'd be able to see Demonia perfectly. I really like that her cultures for each race are so different and that she didn't make the mistake of "humanizing" all her races like so many other authors. If it takes a sci-fi author to write some really great futuristic/urban fantasy I say please, please, please!
There's only two problems I can see anyone having with this book and the first isn't all that bad once you get used to it. Instead of just following Lila like in the first book we are following Lila, Zal, and Malichi and for most of the book they're all in different worlds which is a little more confusing than just changing characters. The bigger problem, to me anyway, is that there are a lot of loose ends and no real ending in this book. A few loose ends are to be expected in a series book, but I like there to be a clear ending to every book. Don't get me wrong, this isn't one of those cliffhanger endings either, but after stirring up that much trouble, solving hardly any of it, and then turning a few pages only to find the end was a letdown.Selling Out (Quantum Gravity, Book 2) Overview

Keeping It Real (Quantum Gravity, Book 1) ReviewWhile Keeping It Real by Justina Robson is her fifth published novel, she shows off the full strength of her imagination here and announces to those who may not have heard already that she is a major talent and that she will write a blend of science fiction and fantasy that demands to be read.
How is that as a selling point?
Keeping It Real opens with a not quite a chapter, not quite a prologue telling us what we need to know. In 2015 there was some sort of Quantum Bomb which detonated in Texas and which opened our world to five alternate / parallel worlds where there are elves, fairies, demons, the dead, and elementals. The other races insist they have known about us all the while.
The novel takes place in 2021 and we need to know that this is the state of being because this is not what the novel is about nor is it the story Robson is telling. But it is the setting.
Lila Black is possibly less than half human. The other half is machine. At the start of the novel we do not know why or how, only that she is assigned security for a rock band called the No Shows which consists of fairies singing backup and an elf as the lead singer. The No Shows are immensely popular and someone is trying to kill the elf, Zal. Lila, as it turns out, does not entirely trust elves and is barely comfortable in her own skin, such as it is. She is in control of her body and machine, but not entirely. There are glitches.
This is the starting point of Keeping It Real. The rest needs to be discovered to be believed. Robson keeps the novel moving at a reasonably fast clip with action, excitement, elf sex, imperfect cyborg machinery, inept fake [...] attempts, and a heroine who is broken more on the inside than on the outside...and this is the woman who must protect Zal, and elf who barely wishes to be protected.
Keeping It Real is perhaps the most original science fiction or fantasy novel I have read in some time and it is because Robson is able to blend the two genres so seamlessly that it is simply just good storytelling. Robson plays with familiar concepts (elves, cyborgs, different worlds, magic), but in doing so she puts them together in ways we haven't seen before. The elves here are aware of the stereotypes brought on by countless fantasy novels and Lord of the Rings (the elves crack on lembas bread so that the humans can't). Remember, this is our world, just altered in our future.
Keeping It Real is the first volume in a proposed trilogy and I cannot wait to see what Robson brings us next.

"Welcome to Bordertown" picks up exactly where the last collection left off, bringing back a magical array of authors who have explored the Borderlands before (Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, Patricia McKillip) as well as new arrivals (Tim Pratt, Cory Doctorow, Neil Gaiman).
Thirteen years ago, Bordertown vanished from the mortal world. No one knows how or why, but when it reappeared, only thirteen days had passed for those inside.
In Terri Windling and Ellen Kushner's opening novella, teenage "fixer" Jim arrives there to find his sister Trish, who ran away to live in Bordertown. But Trish has learned that even magical places have their hardships, even as she befriends a grad student named Anush, whose studies went horribly awry when he was cursed by a cruel elf lady.
Some of these stories are by longtime Borderland contributers. Emma Bull's "Incunabulum" is the tale of a young Blood who lost his memory, and must now forge a new one, and Will Shetterly's "The Seven Sages of Elsewhere" is a feud between two bookstores over a rare, magical tome.
But many of these authors are new to Bordertown anthologies -- Cory Doctorow, Catherynne Valente, Janni Lee Simner, Christopher Barzak, Annette Curtis Klause, Tim Pratt, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Holly Black and Cassandra Clare.
Their stories include a technonerd bringing modern tech to Bordertown, a runaway named Fig who doesn't believe in magic, a girl who falls in love with a statue, a pair of best friends in search of werewolves and vampires, a musician stalked by a lonely love-talker, an artist cursed with blood magic, a gang of Caribbean lesbians haunted by love and magic, a failed musician's relationship with a boy-terrorist, deception and death at a tiny theatre, and a grief-stricken young man looking for his true love.
And then there are poems and songs, such as Jane Yolen's lullaby, and Amal El-Mohtar's delicately surreal poem. Not to mention Neil Gaiman's odd, lilting poem and Patricia McKillip's lush ballad of two sisters.
The 21st century has sapped none of Bordertown's eerie charm -- it's still full of ragged teens, rock concerts, silver-haired elves and odd twists that take people's lives where they never could have expected. And while it shows us that magic and the fantastical will always be alluring, it also has its hidden dangers and sorrows.
This is probably one of the best anthologies I have ever read. While the authors have their own individual quirks, the same silver threads run through almost all of the stories -- a mixture of moonlit magic and grimy, rambunctious urban reality. And they come up with some truly enchanting characters, some of whom are not what they seem. Some are destined to stay in Bordertown, and some merely need the magical to set them on their path.

Bedlam's Bard ReviewThis was the first work (actually works, since it's two books in one) that I'd read that Lackey had a hand in that was set in contemporary society, and I found what I have come to like in Lackey's stories -- how someone (in this case, the fabulously irresponsible and troubled latent bard Eric Banyon) comes to grips with a budding and unexpected talent, which is both blessing and curse. Eric is a gifted musician who busks and plays the RenFair circuit to keep his freedom/avoid responsibility, but when he inadvertantly wakes the sleeping noble elf Korendil, Eric's life is irreversably altered. The mix of magic and mundane (to borrow a Rowlingism) is done nicely in both books, particularly with respect to the L. A. musical underground in the first book and the central plot of the second. As in all of the Lackey books I've read, the problems characters face are presented in both day-to-day and heroic perspectives, with as much emphasis placed on personal issues as on magical battles. I found both stories to be the usual very good read characteristic of Lackey stories, although I confess particular interest since I'm a musician and a lover of RenFairs.Bedlam's Bard OverviewWhen Eric Banyon's flute playing accidentally frees elven noble Korendil from a magical prison, he suddenly finds himself caught up in a desperate fight against an evil elf lord who plans to conquer all of California.

Stone Cold Seduction (Set In Stone, #1) ReviewElle has the craziest few days of her life. She goes from being a store owner whose only real issue in her life is dealing with, or trying to not deal with, her father - a mean evil SOB with an even meaner right hand man, Luke. As a way to get back at her father and try to right some of his wrongs, Elle takes to stealing from him on the sly. She really is a modern day Robin Hood of sorts, sneaking out of his house with jewels or anything that could get her good price. She uses that money to help families her father has ruined in some way or another. During one nighttime robbery, she's caught in a compromising position and rescued by her employee Jax, who turns out to be oh-so-much more than she ever realized and Elle's introduction into the world she really belongs to, begins.
Her world is not one filled with only humans who come and go from her homemade perfume shop. Her crazy hot employee Jax is a gargoyle, a man she once loved but has no memory of is a phoenix, her best friend, Teryl, is an oracle...and she's part shadow elf, courtesy of dear old dad and part...something else from her mom's side.

"We don't know what your powers are," Teryl answered for him. "If you'd just let us explain."
I'd reached my breaking point. "You're telling me I'm some sort of freaky, half human thing. Jax can turn to stone, and I don't know what the hell an oracle can do, but I'm sure it's weird, too."

It's really a lot to take in during one night, and let's not forget that Jax's fate includes Elle as his mate. Fun times! Elle's on a mission now to find out her own fate. It should have been given to her years earlier but with her powers not coming to her at an age they should have, the powers that be, namely her King father, kept not only her fate from her, but caused her horrible pain letting Luke torture her for years. Her parents weren't together, but the 2 weeks she spent with her father each year, they were weeks she came to dread, filled with pain and abuse that no one should have to endure. I'm not completely certain as to why her father punished her in this way. We're told that he did it to make her fall in line, or it could be simply because he's a psychotic, insane guy. Or maybe it's one of those details that will make more sense as the trilogy goes. At some point, her father wiped her memories of much of her youth, those memories included MacLean, a young man that she was supposed to marry in an arranged marriage, but her memories of him are completely gone and start coming back piece by piece when she meets him again.

The story focuses on Elle trying to find her fate, which will help her understand who and what she is. And of course the path isn't smooth. She gets a few answers, finds out she has some powers that surprise everyone around her and the story ends with everything left unanswered. It reads more as part 1, not book 1 - we get a lot of world information, a love triangle is set up, and the plot for Elle moving into the next book is picking up steam. I'm not normally a fan of love triangles. I find it hard to really connect with the characters (in this case the 2 men both vying for Elle) in the triangle because you all know I love my happy endings, and if only one guy gets the girl, someone will be hurt in the end. That said, it's hard not to like both Jax and MacLean and as things stand now, Elle has an impossible choice ahead of her. Though I might be just slightly biased towards Jax, it's hard not to be when the man is described like this:

Her memories of MacLean are coming back bit by bit and she's realizing that it wasn't just an arranged marriage that was bringing them together. He was her one bright spot in the life she had to endure when she was at her father's house and that maybe the love she felt for him then, could still be a possibility now.

Overall I thought this was a nice start, and while we get hit with a lot of information, and not a lot of action, I'm looking forward to seeing how Elle handles all her new powers, seeing what other surprises pop up for her in the power/fate department and trying to figure out which guy will win her heart.

Saving her oracle BFF's fiance, falling in love with the gargoyle, and making up for breaking the phoenix s heart ought to be a piece of cake for the princess of the shadow elves.

If only the king didn't want his daughter dead...

The Elf Queen: Clan Elves of the Bitterroot Series ReviewI enjoyed the first book in the Bitterroot Series and am looking forward to seeing where this series leads.
I was charmed by the setting for this seemingly straight-ahead fantasy. We've seen elements of the plot before in many other fantasy works (elf clans battle amongst each other for supremacy with the involvement of an apparently human protagonist), but Alexander gives it interesting "green" and "native American" twists that make the story fresh. Present day Missoula, Montana is a terrific setting, made even more so because it isn't the first place I would have thought to go searching for elves.
I also liked the hippy vibe of the human characters in the book. The band of latte-drinking, slacker/hacker, eco-warriors already live in a kind of fantasy world of their own construction and the events in the book cause them to rethink their lives in different ways. One of the humans, an agoraphobic with a painful past, hasn't left his apartment in years. He is drawn out of his own world and discovers the "real" world is more inviting than he could have imagined.
This is the first of a series, but it stands alone as a complete story with a satisfying ending.
I had quibbles with a couple of plot points. For example, why did Jelani have to travel all the way to Indiana to pick up a couple of boxes of papers when her stepmother could have just sent them via UPS? The fate and role of the cop ex-boyfriend at the end fell flat (literally). But overall this was a nice piece of escapist fantasy with interesting characters and told with a fresh voice, and I'm looking forward to returning to the Bitterroot Mountains when the next installment comes out.The Elf Queen: Clan Elves of the Bitterroot Series OverviewWhen Jelani tries on a real glass slipper left lying on the sidewalk, it splits in half and out pours dozens of two-inch high creatures who scurry away into the shadows. Me, My Elf & I ReviewFifteen-year-old Zephyr Addler has just moved to Brooklyn with her five siblings, her naturopath mother, and her folk-rock-star father from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Switching from being home schooled in a cottage in the woods to attending a sophisticated arts high school in a big city isn't Zephyr's only culture shock. She's living for the first time among humans.
Zephyr is an elf with the magical ability of casting spells and can potentially live hundreds of years. In addition, like all her fellow elves, Zephyr is a tall, gorgeous, green-eyed blonde who is fit and lean from a vigorous, outdoor lifestyle and a healthy, natural diet. She also shares to a great degree the elvish trait of empathetic kindness.
Zephyr's family plans to be away from Alverland, their secret. elvish home, for only a year while Zephyr's dad is making major strides in his musical career. But the adult elves in their close-knit community--especially Zephyr's grandmother--are very worried about what will happen to the Addler family in an "erdler" (human) city. Zephyr doesn't care about any of that. She's got big plans, and she can't wait to get started on them. She wants to act, sing and, most of all, have a date with a cute erdler boy!
This book is well written, and the story is a comic treat. I enjoyed very much learning about Zephyr's life as an elf. She is immensely likeable, as are her eccentric, lovable family. Zephyr's struggles to fit into the human world are at times funny and at others poignant. I also found it very clever the way the author uses Zephyr's virtues of kindness and innocent naïveté to get Zephyr--and her friends and family--into whacky messes.
Teen girls will gobble up this story! And parents will approve very much of the elvish lifestyle. They don't drink, smoke or engage in uncommitted sex, so the book is G-Rated and could safely be read by girls as young as 11.
Me, My Elf & I OverviewIt's not often you see an elf in the middle of Brooklyn, let alone a tall, blond, gorgeous elf in the middle of one of the most prestigious performing arts high schools in the country. And yet, that's just where Zephyr Addler finds herself: smack dab in the middle of a bustling New York City school, worlds away from the secluded woodland community she knows so well. But Zephyr knows that she has to figure out how to live in the world. And dress in the world. Thanks to a little friendly advice from her new friend Mercedes, Zephyr starts to get the hang of Brooklyn. That is, until Zephyr snags a role in a commercial, beating out the most popular girl in school, Bella Dartagnan. Now with Bella and her friends out to get her, can Zephyr out-maneuver the mean girls (and catch the eye of a certain cute boy) without losing herself?
