Working With Fairies ReviewI enjoyed this book, though I found the sub title a bit misleading about the book's contents. I was expecting to see page upon page of spells and charms but was pleasantly surprised by very thorough history lessons on many of The Wild Folk.
The eight chapters in the book contained a wealth of information of historical accounts of fairies from around the world. Where they live, what they do and how to obtain their help as well as avoid their ire comprised major portions of each chapter.
Chapters were divided into sections like The Other World, Devas and Dryads and Elementals. The last one was the most extensive filling about a third of the book with informational tidbits, poems, meditations, correspondences, and suggested rituals for each of the four Elemental Fae.
I have never been a big "fairy" person per se, but I found the historical accounts fascinating and well worth the read. The glossary in the back was a helpful addition to the book. Keeping track of who's who and what is often difficult in books like these. Having a well-formatted index with easy to read bold headings in the back made it easier to keep track of that.
In the chapter called Fairy Families, I especially liked the listing of the Muses and what their `specialty' was. This is something that I often wanted to know in the past but was unable to find the information as accessible as it is presented in this book. Information such as this is presented in a factual, straightforward manner. The author includes dates, places and names when possible as much of her source material came from historical accounts of `witch' trails.
The recipes included in the book are made with common ingredients for the most part, making it possible for those interested in deepening their relationships with fairies to try their hand at making them.
If you are interested in fairy lore, or want to include fairies as part of your practice, this is a good book with plenty to hold your interest.

Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel ReviewThis is an amazing adventure book that will more than appeal to middle-grade boys who have even the slightest sense of adventure - or just enjoy a good story.
Patrick O'Sullivan is a boy, the son of a simple potato farmer, who dreams of great adventures, and even goes out to create them. He pulls his best friend Barry reluctantly along with him. He thinks it's a grand adventure when he meets a faery named Elianne, but that doesn't compare to the adventure he gets when he meets the Leprechaun Grady. Grady tells him he needs Patrick's help to get the rainbow and pot of gold back from the trolls who have stolen it.
From faeries to elves to leprechauns, trolls, river monsters and witches, this books has a fairytale character for everyone. If you've ever wondered about the pot at the end of the rainbow, and what would happen if it were taken away, here's your story.
While I can guarantee the appeal of this book to boys between the ages of 8-14, I quite enjoyed it myself - and I'm a forty-something mom. It reminds me of the tales I used to tell my own sons when they were small. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good adventure story.Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel OverviewTwelve-year-old Patrick is a bored, potato farmer's son, irritated with his sister's nagging and his ordinary life.He dreams of adventure, but never expects these dreams to come true until he meets a leprechaun named Grady.Grady needs Patrick's help to rescue the rainbow, that has been stolen by trolls, along with the pot o' gold. After studying the boy from afar, Grady knows he's just the lad that will be up to a challenge like this.Aye, it was lucky he caught sight of the laddie in the first place.Patrick thinks of himself as fearless, especially after putting the frog in ole Ms. Flannigan's school satchel, so he's more than ready to go along on such a quest. The two set off on a journey across the Irish countryside, venturing into the demon-filled Black Forest where the trees come to life at sunset. They must cross a precarious foot bridge, face dark caves and are attacked by angry owls before Patrick endures the ultimate test of battling the trolls for the rainbow and pot o' gold. Will Patrick really be brave enough to rescue the rainbow?SAVING THE RAINBOW is a magical tale for children and young adults. It explores the nature of fantasy and reality, safety and danger, and what it means to grow up.

Keeper of Memories ReviewI recently stumbled upon this short novel and found a compelling read. Ms. Wallace's easy reading style lent itself to a delightfully fantastic journey of young Celee. I am very excited for the next installment to find more depth to the world along side our own. Please tell me another on is in the works! When does the movie come out?Keeper of Memories OverviewThe letter changed everything.Celee has always been a loner, shy and awkward, preferring her books and computer games to real life. Everything was dull, routine and boring. Celee was content. And then the letter came.An aunt that Celee never knew existed has left her an inheritance, but with that gift comes the dreams... waking dreams that strike without warning, full of chilling cries for help.Terrified, Celee seeks help, but instead of help, she finds herself trapped in another world, the land of Wunsierth. Suddenly, Celee is no longer the loner- she's an entirely different person, the kind of person she's always hoped to be.Is Wunsierth real or is it just the product of an overactive imagination? The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves & Other Little People ReviewThis book was originally published in 1880 and is an excellent history of the shaping of Faerie. It starts with the origin of the term and then documents the development of the ideas and tales of Fairies in many cultures. This book is full of summaries of stories, portions of text in their original language (some of which also appear translated), footnotes to naming conventions, pronunciations, criticisms, etc. I agree with the other reviewer that this book is not for everyone and in many cases is a tough read, but it is well worth it. In short, this would be a great textbook for a class on the history of Faerie. The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves & Other Little People OverviewA fascinating compendium of folklore, superstitions, and mythology surrounding the 'little people', including discussions of fairy tradition as it appears in great works of English literature.

Field Guide to the Little People: A Curious Journey Into the Hidden Realm of Elves, Faeries, Hobgoblins & Other Not-So-Mythical Creatures ReviewIn the Field Guide of the Little People, Nancy Arrowsmith present you the dark but marvelous world of the little people. If you are interested to learn about these creatures from the lore of Northern Europe, this book is a must for you. Now, be forewarned that these you'll not find in a Disney movie, but in the original stories collected by the Brothers Grimm.
This book organizes the little people into three main groups: Light Elves, Dark Elves and Dusky Elves. This classification fits the creature nature and place they habitat. However, you will notice that the vast majority of creatures shown in this book is comprised of Dusky Elves. There is a good reason for this as, according to the author, these creatures are easier to identify due to the limitations in the environment where they live.
For every creature listed, there is a description which include information such as physical description and habitat, and a wonderful illustration. These black and white sketches, by Sabrina the Ink Witch, help to set an atmosphere where you can catch a glimpse of these creatures. Even in some instances, there is a brief story included, which fleshes out the encounters of human with such creatures.
This is a marvelous book to have at hand when your interest turns towards the little people, but you will find out it is very difficult to put away once you start reading.Field Guide to the Little People: A Curious Journey Into the Hidden Realm of Elves, Faeries, Hobgoblins & Other Not-So-Mythical Creatures OverviewIn high summer meadows, nestled in the moors, near old castles, or behind the kitchen stove—these are the places where the Little People may be found.
Make the acquaintance of White Ladies and Red Caps, Church Grims and Hobgoblins, English Fairies, Leprechauns, Sirens, Hey-Hey Men, and all of their strange and mythical kin. Become wise in the ways of these magical creatures, some beautiful and benevolent, others cunning, menacing, or morose.
For many years, this field guide has been as elusive as a Will-o'-the-Wisp. This is the first opportunity for fans to once again own an English-language edition of one of the most revered introductions to elf folk ever written.
Featuring more than 80 new illustrations

The Completely Fantastical Edition: The Field Guide; The Seeing Stone; Lucinda's Secret; The Ironwood Tree; The Wrath of Mulgarath (Spiderwick Chronicles) ReviewThe short review: If you like the stories, and are not attached to the illustrations, or if you are somebody who just wants to read the book, but again, are not overly concerned about illustrations peppering the text, this book is great. The book is slightly larger than the other editions by a inch in height and a half inch in width (it's roughly the size of an old Book Club edition hardcover). Printing quality is good and the new cover is pretty and makes wonderful use of spot-varnishing (where some parts are glossier than others). In addition to the full text of all 5 books, it has the 3 "lost chapters" that were put out as three small paperbacks in cereal boxes to promote the film a couple of years ago. It also has 42 beautiful pages of sketches, drawings and notes from the artist, as well as 17 pin-ups by other artists.
However, for die-hard collectors, or lovers of the artwork in these books, you will want this new edition, but don't sell your individual books or throw those "cereal" books on ebay just yet. Here's an OCD-friendly list of what's been reproduced or not reproduced in the new collected edition.
** specific references use the format Book/Page (i.e. b1/p22 means Book 1, page 22). The "cereal books are "cb" instead of "b" **
=======Included======
- Full text of all five volumes.
- Full text of all three "cereal" books.

- 4 pen & ink spot illustrations now reproduced as full-page illustrations with more artwork (b1/p22, b3/p77, b4/p66, b5/p129).

- "Sprite" pen & ink portrait from "cereal" book 3 (slightly modified from the "Basic Sprite Body" in the Care and Feeding of Sprites book, but cropped a little and featuring wings and "clothes" that are not on the original drawing).
- "The Grace Kids" pen & ink portrait from "cereal" books 1-3. It is primarily a composite/cropping of their three separate portraits (b1/p2, b1/p3 & b1/p16), but has been redrawn slightly to give Mallory a different shirt. This is similar to, but not the same as, the colored portrait from the back of box set's slipcase.

The Dawnstone Tale: Translations From Jorthus ReviewThis was an amazing journey and I cannot wait for it to continue. The characters are fun and three-dimensional (it's so easy to make characters static and lifeless, but the author doesn't fall into that trap). The tale is engrossing and keeps you guessing at the motivations of the main characters. I'm now reading the sequel to The Dawnstone Tale, and I cannot wait to see where Ruth Davis Hays will take us next.
Compelling and fun ...and a great escape for the reader.

Chasing the Dragon (Quantum Gravity, Book 4) ReviewCHASING THE DRAGON, the fourth installment in Justina Robson's "Quantum Gravity" series, opens with our cyborgified heroine Lila Black wandering the beaches of Otopia -- that is, Earth -- distracted and silent, in a tattered dress. It's fifty years after the main events of the previous book, GOING UNDER, but only a few months have passed for Lila since she parted from the mostly-dead Zal, nearly killed by the late and unlamented faery Jack the Giantkiller. It's not clear why Lila and her demon husband Teazle got kicked forward in time at the end of GOING UNDER, but a lot has changed on Otopia and elsewhere, and not for the better.
Having lost her parents, her sister, her sister-in-law Sorcha, her husband Zal, and others, not to mention being displaced from her time, Lila is depressed, suicidal, homicidal, and most of all desperately seeking Zal. She sends Teazle off on a mission that involves him slaughtering half of the ruling demons in Demonia, and gets recruited by the seriously weird new Agency head Temple Greer (a dead ringer for James Lester in the TV show "Primeval") ... to hunt down and kill Teazle. Meanwhile, Zal is being held in some kind of strange limbo, Teazle gets caught in a serious trap, and Ghost hunter Calliope Jones washes up, along with a whole lot of ghost ships, along Otopia's shores. Somebody, somewhere, is doing something intensely dangerous and foolish, and it is up to Lila and her friends to figure out who, what, where, why, and how to stop him/her/it.
As in the earlier books, Lila spends the first half of the book or so in Otopia as the scene gets set, and then ventures off into a new realm -- in this case, the boundary between the ghost lands and the Void, the place from where the first dragon -- or whatever she was -- came forth to create the universe. I have to say that, even though this place gives Robson space to contemplate a warped version of contemporary cosmology, it isn't all that interesting. The goose that's being chased also turns out to be an odd and not very compelling bird, and the resolution of the chase -- the cataclysmic climax that we've come to expect from the three earlier books -- is a serious let-down.
On the plus side, CHASING THE DRAGON continues the development of a cast of interesting characters and continues to deepen our understanding a of a complex set of parallel worlds. It is sprinkled with humor, including not only Lila's sardonic takes on events, but Temple Greer's facetious remarks and the behavior of Lila's faery armor-with-a-mind-of-its-own, which sometimes kits her out as a southern belle, and at other times tends towards the even more bizarre. On the minus side, the book lacks a clear focus. The identity of the "villain" -- and even the existence of such a person -- doesn't come until very late, and we learn much less about dragons than you might expect from the title. Some of the side plots, like about the rogue "androids", lead nowhere, and others are too lengthy. In other words, CHASING THE DRAGON isn't likely to meet the high expectations of fans, but also isn't likely to be a huge disappointment.Chasing the Dragon (Quantum Gravity, Book 4) Overview

Lucinda's Secret: Movie Tie-in Edition (The Spiderwick Chronicles) ReviewThe mysterious tale of the Spiderwick legacy continues in the third installment of the Chronicles, as the twins Jared and Simon Grace and their elder sister Mallory run into more members of the faery world in their ongoing study of great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Faery World.
After moving into the Spiderwick Estate with their divorced mother, the three siblings found the secret library of Arthur, who vanished several years ago, leaving only his comprehensive guide to the faery world that surrounds his home. It is this world that the Grace children are gradually getting to know, and already they have a couple of brownie/boggart and hobgoblin friends and an injured griffin in the barn. But it just so happens that after centuries of abuse and destruction, the faeries aren't so keen on humans learning about their world once more, and so are out to stop them by any means possible. Mallory and Simon are rather keen on ridding themselves of the Guidebook and thereby getting themselves out of trouble, but Jared, who feels the study of faeries is the only thing he's been really good at refuses, and instead suggest visiting great-aunt Lucinda, the daughter of Arthur Spiderwick, who might have some answers to their questions.
From the visit at the old person's home to the discovery of an old map in Arthur's libary, the three children decide to set out and discover what actually happened to Arthur. This leads them to the riddle-speaking Phooka (one of the book's best characters yet!) and the court of the noble, beautiful, but extremely suspicious elves, who are the guardians of the realm of faery, and not at all pleased that humans have breached their domain...
I am loving the Spiderwick Chronicles, and personally can't wait until the next installment "The Ironwood Tree" is published, as it promises even more faeries, including dwarfs! As the poem at the back of "Lucinda's Secret" says: "And beneath the old quarry, just outside of town, lives a king with a kingdom, but who wears the crown?" It is almost cruel that publishers make us wait so long.
To a point, "Lucinda's Secret" was not quite up to the success of the two previous books, as the story was quite clearly split into two: the visit to the nursing home, and the trek into the faery realms. Perhaps if they had found the map earlier, and shown it to Lucinda, the book would have felt more fluid. As such, I'm getting a tad concerned at the outcome of this series - its been established that there's only five books in the series, but so far more and more characters and situations are being introduced, with nothing really getting resolved. On top of the theme of the children inflicting on the secret world of the faeries (a theme I thought was more than enough to carry the series along) there were hints here that a good and evil plot strand is arriving soon, with mention of one Mulgarath the ogre gathering malevolent forces to him. Of course, its rather useless worrying about it yet, but I'd hate to be disappointed in this great series, and the sheer shortness of the books (I read "Lucinda's Secret in half an hour) means that there's a lot of ground to cover in the remaining two books, and I'd hate to see Thimbletack, Hogsqueal, Byron or the Phooka shortchanged in wrapping up the story.
Likewise, the promised "Lucinda's Secret" wasn't so much of a startling revelation than simply a little background to the Spiderwick family and reassurting what the children already know - not much of a secret! However, the faery lore that Holly Black places within the context of the story is truly wonderful - any long time scholars of faeries will delight in seeing the dangers of faery food, the technique of wearing one's clothes worn inside out, the faery use of stray sods and the power imbued in a name put to good use. And Tony DiTerlizzi's illustrations are an absolute delight. The beautifully clear and intricate pictures perfectly capture what the text describes, and creates what I consider the *real* nature of faery - not a silly, pretty little world, but quirky, intricate, and a little dangerous. Any fans of Brian Froud will adore Tony DiTerlizzi's drawings, and I myself almost wept with delight at his depiction of the unicorn - no sweet little pony, but small and stunted, with lion's paws and tail and a goat's beard: exactly how the original unicorns were depicted.
Finally, the presentation of the book is stunning, especially in regard to the way the author creates it as a 'real story', with the children of the story actually writing to the authors with their story (and their letter is included!) The Spiderwick Chronicles are perfect for bringing lore of faery to a new generation, and I can't wait for the next book!Lucinda's Secret: Movie Tie-in Edition (The Spiderwick Chronicles) Overview

Wizard's Bane (The Sojourn Chronicles) ReviewThis is the first book in a series. It's the standard fish out of water, high technology meets high magic. In this case our hero Dale is somehow stranded on a magical world. There is the promise of a great battle against overwhelming odds to come, but in this volume we are treated to a very long trip through the woods, lots of making and breaking camp and meeting various magical and non magical character that may or may not be important to the final conflict. The plotting and setting didn't impress me much, for the most part it was like reaidng about someone else's camping trip. What I did like, and why I'll keep reading, was the characterizations. The hero is a bit one dimensional, but the supporting cast that is collected includes some interesting characters and I'd like to see what becomes of them.
Having seen about as much to the forest and moutains that I can stand, I'm hoping that future books move us inside expose us to more magic adn and more wonder.Wizard's Bane (The Sojourn Chronicles) OverviewWizard's Bane is the first book in The Sojourn Chronicles series. A glorious adventure set on a low tech planet populated with magical creatures, wizards and all manner of fantastic marvels awaits the reader.Dale, a member of an intergalactic space fleet, is stranded here. Bereft of his powers, without access to his fleet, and chased by monsters known as Gorg, he discovers that not only must he survive but the fate of the world sits squarely on his shoulders. Either he finds a way to stop the massive Gorg invasion, or they will over run the planet and destroy all life upon its surface... including him!

Enchanting Elves: Paint Elven Worlds and Fantasy Characters ReviewI've bought other books by Ms. Lanza and Enchanting Elves doesn't disappoint. For those looking to learn how to draw the Elven realm, Ms. Lanza walks you step by step through the inital design through the completed painting without bogging the reader down in overly detailed or not-needed information. As with Ms. Lanza's other books, the first pages discuss materials such as paints and brushes; how to prepare your paper for painting (which is essential!); how to work with color, and the use of light/shadow in painting. Ms. Lanza provides a number of different drawing/painting demonstrations for the reader to try and walks the artist through each step of the demonstration. If you're looking to improve your faerie drawing skills or are new to the faerie art world, this is a good book to have in your collection.Enchanting Elves: Paint Elven Worlds and Fantasy Characters OverviewLearn the basics of painting elves, sprites, gnomes and dwarves in natural surroundings. This book is suitable for beginners yet realistic enough to expand skills and provide inspiration. Materials, techniques and step-by-step demonstrations go from simple to more intermediate. The demonstrations feature individuals and groups, from simple subjects without backgrounds to those with various background elements. This book covers watercolour techniques in a popular, sweet style that makes this unique in its appeal.

One Wizard Place ReviewBehind the glass doors, guarded by stone statues of giant winged creatures, is the headquarters of numerous governmental offices. These include the Mythical Bureau of Investigation (MBI) and the Incantation Enforcement Agency (IEA). Justin Kasey Hobskin (known as Kace), works with his partner Murdox as an agent of the Counter-Curse division of the IEA. This is a position he took after a very nasty curse left his father turned into a wolf, and Murdox a talking wolf-dog(an unfixable condition that has left him very out of sorts). The counter curse department is a small one whose agents are in charge of righting magic that has gone wrong. It's a tough job to have. It is too bad that there are only the two of them doing it.
After returning back to the office after a long, tough job of clearing a house of a particularly nasty infestation of nixies, Kase and Murdox are given their next assignment. The elf king of Greylock has accidentally drunk a potion which is slowly turning him to stone. Upon visiting the king, the partners discover that in order to cure him they need a very rare and hard to get ingredient. They will have to travel far, find the needed ingredient, and get back to the king with only ten days before the spell becomes irreversible!
In this, his first novel, author D.M. Paul has created a wonderful world where technology and magic mix. He introduces us to city named Cloudview that is a hundred levels high, each level a city in its own right. Where its inhabitants travel around by slug system(what was once the bus system), the vertical train (between levels), and the horizontal tube(a one level train-like system) It is populated by a myriad of inhabitants who don't always seem to be what they are. This book, while written for younger readers, will enchant and delight adult fans of fantasy fiction as well. This is the first book in a three book series, Book two Sentinel will be released later in 2006.
One Wizard Place OverviewIT'S TIME TO RIGHT MAGIC THAT HAS GONE WRONG!Young Justin Kasey Hobskin (known as Kase) and his faithful partner Murdox (who just happens to be a talking wolf-dog) are agents for the Incantation Enforcement Agency, Counter-Curse Division. In a world where magic and technology are intertwined; they have the unpleasant job of righting magic that has gone wrong. Following the completion of the difficult task of rousting some pesky nixies (wily little blue vermin), they learn that their next assignment involves saving an elf king who is slowly turning to stone after drinking a mystical afternoon tea. What begins as a typical quirky assignment turns out to be a quest that takes them to forbidden lands where they encounter magical beasts and unique challenges destined to test all their skills and intelligence.

Sidhe (One Wizard Place) ReviewI absolutely loved this book. After my son read the first one and requested all three, I thought I would give this one a read through. The book is written for Middle Grade kids, but it's really fun to read even for an adult. D.M. Paul's style has really improved from the first book (which I liked as well) and I would say is now on par with any of the other big time kid novelists.
It's a must get if your child loves fantasy/sci-fi
Sidhe (One Wizard Place) OverviewOn a dig where the Sídhe, or faerie race, were thought to have originated, an elderly archeologist has discovered one of their two great staves of power. The artifact has been taken for authentication to a museum in the multi-layered city of Cloudview, but before it can be examined fully, thieves steal the ancient staff and disappear into the wilds of the vast Park that comprises the 13th level of the metropolis. While on a routine reconnaissance mission in the Park's immense forest region, sylvan-elf scout Kestrel Greenleaf encounters a curious enchantment drifting on the wind. She follows the trail of magic back to the realm of the Faerie Queen, where she witnesses a powerful surge of energy that can only have come from one source. With the help of a brave young Sentinel and a High Wizard from Greylok, as well as two physically mismatched agents from the Incantation Enforcement Agency, Kestrel embarks on an adventure that takes them all deep into the wilderness on a quest to stop the Faerie Queen before her destructive magic grows beyond their control.

Oathbreaker (A faery tale) ReviewThis was a really fun read. It was short and had all the elements of good fiction. I am not usually into magical tales but I like this story because little to no magic was used to solve their problem. Oonzil was a fun pixie to follow as he got himself into trouble and out of it. It had a nice plot and I loved the ending! :DOathbreaker (A faery tale) OverviewOonzil Windlestraw, a pixie with a serious temper problem, befriends a wizard and his eagle familiar. The trio are forced into fantastic dramatic action when a human fairy hunter nabs a fae girl with the intent of grinding her into pixie dust for profit. This is a 30 page story with another full, flash fiction story called 'The Blood of Coldfrost' included in the file. This is the perfect read for fantasy fans who are inbetween large novels. It has plenty of pixie-fighting, eagle-riding action and lots of tense excitment. In order to make your 10% preview longer I have also attached a (3) chapter sneak preview of 'The Royal Dragoneers', which is due out in mid Oct. 2010Heres a snippet from "Oathbreaker":The next morning, as they prepared to go wasp hunting, Oonzil wondered how the eagle had managed to get the doily out from under the teapot. He never had the chance to ask about it, because no sooner had the curiosity came on him, Igor leapt from the ground, and went flapping lustily after a wasp.It was all Oonzil could do to keep from tumbling off of Igor's back, as the eagle started after the unsuspecting bug. Igor was strong. He surged through the air swiftly. Just as Oonzil had instructed him, the eagle got as close as he could to the wasp before he swept past.Oonzil was thrilled. The feel of the wind in his hair, and the forces generated by Igor's sharp swooping turns, caused his heart to soar. Using the rigged up doily like it was a throw net, Oonzil timed his toss and threw. He yanked on the makeshift draw string he had attached. The net pulled closed just like it was supposed to. Excitedly, Oonzil had Igor sit them down near the firefly cage Oonzil had borrowed from the village bug man. Both of them were disappointed to find the doily net empty, but they weren't discouraged. The setup would have worked perfectly, if only Oonzil would have timed his throw better."You'll have to slow up a bit when we come upon the buzzers," he told the eagle, with a grin."Aye, Ooonzy," Igor exclaimed, gleefully. "It worked just like you said it would. We just need to get closer, I think."It took a few more attempts to get the timing of the approach and the throw down, but they did it. By evening, the cage was buzzing with angry wasps. With much pride, and more than a little satisfaction, Oonzil and Igor delivered the prize to the wizard at his supper table."What's this?" The old man asked. He rose from his soup bowl to see the pixie boy sliding off of Igor's back. The cage the eagle put down at the end of the table, buzzed and vibrated in angry response."Oh ho!" Master Zarvin chuckled with a big smile showing in the crinkled corners of his eyes. "Wasps!""Wasps for a bargain, good wizard," Oonzil clarified. "A full Baker's dozen of them, all alive and whole.""A bargain?" Master Zarvin's brows wiggled with curious delight. "Well, Oonzil Windlestraw, let's strike a deal then."Also by M.R. Amber Magic (Haven Series #1) ReviewNow this is something different. GOOD and different, a nice combo.
At first, when you are reading this book, you start thinking it is all rather namby-pamby. The characters are so very likeable and the mysterious bad guys you see hanging around at a distance are traditional, Tolkien-type bad guys. But after a while, especially at the end and as you read the sample for the next one... things get kind of creepy. The world is full of baddies that are nightmarish, alien, strange... inhuman. They become really cool. They don't even understand how humans think, they are so weird and carelessly evil. They might dance with you, or kill you, or give you something, all with a smile. And what they do makes sense from their strange point of view. In fact, this series is part horror I would say. Not gory, but disturbing. I guess if there really were elves and dwarves and other races they would be alien and scary, not just short humans who talk like scotsmen or something. I especially liked the Wee Folk, who are funny, strange, sneaky little bastards.
My main complaint was that wished it was longer. There were too many short chapters, too. The later books in the series are longer, but this cheap one was the shortest. I'm used to big fat fantasy books, like Jordan books. I would complain more, but it was so cheap. It's a great fantasy for a buck, and it is different, so I can't complain. I mean seriously, this book cost me less than a bottle of water.
Amber Magic (Haven Series #1) OverviewThe humans have no magic and are hunted for sport, but that is about to change. War is coming....The Sun Dragon spawned nine lesser dragons which devoured their parent for the power the elder possessed. These young dragons fought for choice bits of the Sun Dragon, but each only managed to eat a portion, thus giving them specific powers. Over time, these foul dragons were hunted down and slain by heroes of old. When each body rotted away, nothing remained save for nine Jewels--each the lens of a dragon's left eye. These Nine Eyes, or Jewels, form the basis for all magic in the world. The Haven Series is a fantasy epic about the Nine Jewels of Power, each of which represents a different form of magic. The Red Jewel, known as Sang, gives the wielder power over Blood Magic. The Blue, named Lavatis, can call the Rainbow and rules the Sky. Amber Magic is a short introductory book in this epic series of fantasy novels by bestselling author B. V. Larson.

Schleich Turag ReviewI bought this and a few other characters to go with my sons' new Schleich castle. All of the characters are honestly beautiful, very well-made and fun to play with. This guy in particular seems to come off of his horse somewhat easily, but my sons haven't complained about it at all, so maybe it's only something an adult would notice.
These are a little pricey, but I feel it's worth it. You definitely get what you pay for with toys, and with these, I expect them to last for a long time.Schleich Turag OverviewTurag, the dark army commander of the shadow elves.
With his glistening vambraces and greaves, Turag is always ready for battle. His pitch-black hair goes with his dark wings interwoven with silver just as it does with his night-coloured coat. Ephaam, his black horse is just as wild and fast as his master. Over the years, Turag's power and cunning have taken him to the head of the elf army. Just like Ophira, he seems to be a loyal subject of his Princess Nuray. But he also harbours, like many shadow elves, a dark secret.
