Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel ReviewThis is an amazing adventure book that will more than appeal to middle-grade boys who have even the slightest sense of adventure - or just enjoy a good story.
Patrick O'Sullivan is a boy, the son of a simple potato farmer, who dreams of great adventures, and even goes out to create them. He pulls his best friend Barry reluctantly along with him. He thinks it's a grand adventure when he meets a faery named Elianne, but that doesn't compare to the adventure he gets when he meets the Leprechaun Grady. Grady tells him he needs Patrick's help to get the rainbow and pot of gold back from the trolls who have stolen it.
From faeries to elves to leprechauns, trolls, river monsters and witches, this books has a fairytale character for everyone. If you've ever wondered about the pot at the end of the rainbow, and what would happen if it were taken away, here's your story.
While I can guarantee the appeal of this book to boys between the ages of 8-14, I quite enjoyed it myself - and I'm a forty-something mom. It reminds me of the tales I used to tell my own sons when they were small. If you are interested to learn about these creatures from the lore of Northern Europe, this book is a must for you. Now, be forewarned that these you'll not find in a Disney movie, but in the original stories collected by the Brothers Grimm.
This book organizes the little people into three main groups: Light Elves, Dark Elves and Dusky Elves. This classification fits the creature nature and place they habitat. However, you will notice that the vast majority of creatures shown in this book is comprised of Dusky Elves. There is a good reason for this as, according to the author, these creatures are easier to identify due to the limitations in the environment where they live.
For every creature listed, there is a description which include information such as physical description and habitat, and a wonderful illustration. Even in some instances, there is a brief story included, which fleshes out the encounters of human with such creatures.
