The Wonderful Adventures of Nils ReviewThough this story easily deserves 5 stars, it suffers slightly due to the author's agenda (she was commissioned to write a geography book for children). Knowing this, it is easy to hurl criticism at those chapters that seem to exist solely for the purpose of education. Nonetheless, once this minor fault (and I am not really sure you can call it a fault) is recognized, the story of Nils is a fantastic one, seemingly not at all distant from native folklore and fairy tales, rich with an earthiness that simply doesn't exist in modern children literature. Of course, Lagerlof does more then simply make a modern day fairy-tale. There are passages here that are simply too delightful for description; one which comes to mind is a gathering of all the animals to celebrate the coming of spring--the image and significance crafted by the author are bound to stay with the reader for a life-time. I haven't read anything else by Lagerlof, and only found this book by accident at a local vendor. If I have any complaint it is that Dover does not offer the sequel to this work (at this writing anyway), though apparently another publisher offers it at a much higher price. I think anyone who enjoys folktales/folklore and whimsical animal fantasies (I.E. Wind in the Willows, the Moomin books, etc.) will find this book very rewarding and enjoy the opportunity to read an unknown classic (in Sweden, Nils actually appears on their money!)The Wonderful Adventures of Nils OverviewThis is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. I bought several to give away, as it makes a wonderful gift for a child or expectant parents. When the box arrived, yesterday, it was indeed a glorious day! Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel ReviewThis is an amazing adventure book that will more than appeal to middle-grade boys who have even the slightest sense of adventure - or just enjoy a good story.
Patrick O'Sullivan is a boy, the son of a simple potato farmer, who dreams of great adventures, and even goes out to create them. He pulls his best friend Barry reluctantly along with him. He thinks it's a grand adventure when he meets a faery named Elianne, but that doesn't compare to the adventure he gets when he meets the Leprechaun Grady. Grady tells him he needs Patrick's help to get the rainbow and pot of gold back from the trolls who have stolen it.
From faeries to elves to leprechauns, trolls, river monsters and witches, this books has a fairytale character for everyone. If you've ever wondered about the pot at the end of the rainbow, and what would happen if it were taken away, here's your story.
While I can guarantee the appeal of this book to boys between the ages of 8-14, I quite enjoyed it myself - and I'm a forty-something mom. It reminds me of the tales I used to tell my own sons when they were small. A True Princess ReviewGive me more of Diane Zahler's stories, please. She's new to the YA fantasy genre, and A TRUE PRINCESS seems to be only her second book in this. But I enjoyed it, read thru it in one sitting (it helps that it's only 182 pages long). It's a retelling of the classic "The Princess and the Pea," done up sort of like a fractured fairy tale but not so pop culture savvy and hip. The story sustains enough of the classic fantasy elements that it doesn't feel jaggedly modernized or cynical. There is, however, a pamphlet on "How To Tell A True Princess" floating around in these pages. Present as well is that message of girl empowerment. And that, of course, is very okay.
Twelve-year-old Lilia chose to flee rather than be sold to the cruel local miller as his new servant. Lilia, who was found floating in a rough basket down a river when she was two, never got the hang of being a peasant, wasn't adept at chores, anyway. She tends to be flighty and half-asleep all the time and her cooking is seriously atrocious stuff. Running away, Lilia heads north, thinking to trace her steps, look up her family. Big task for a little girl. It helps that her two friends, Karina and Kai, accompany her.
But, in the menacing Bitra Forest, Kai falls in the clutches of the dreadful Elf-King's daughter. To save him, Lilia and Karina must hire on as maid servants at the palace of the kingdom of Dalir and there unearth a hidden enchanted artifact. Never mind that this item, once in the grasp of the Elf-King, constitutes horrible times ahead for everyone.
In this same palace a different search is being conducted, some mysterious test to reveal a true princess, someone who'd be a match for the prince of the realm. Except that so far none had passed the test, which takes place in a locked chamber. A chamber Lilia means to break into. She thinks what she's looking for is somewhere in there.
It's a crowded field already, but move over some, Gail Carson Levine, Tamora Pierce, Margaret Peterson Haddix and all. I got caught up in reading A TRUE PRINCESS. It gives you equal doses of adventure and fantasy, peril and a touch of romance, and just enough tongue-in-cheek whimsy to make the reading come off fresh. Lilia is one of those plucky, selfless heroines you simply root for. She's brave enough that she soon wins over the respect of Dalir's lords and knights. She braces the deceitful Elf-Lord. She wins the day. If you know the story of "The Princess and the Pea," then you're already down with the hook of this story. But the writer weaves in some new twists, expands the plot to include sinister forest elves, a surly nisse (a household guardian spirit), falcons in the nick of time, and the fearsome Lord of the Hunt. No, Lilia doesn't get the handsome prince, but she and the prince weren't like that. It's still a happy ending. It's still a wonderful read for those who eat up YA fantasy material. So now I've got to look up THE THIRTEENTH PRINCESS, which is Diane Zahler's reworking of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," another classic fairy tale.A True Princess Overview
Twelve-year-old Lilia is not a very good servant. In fact, she's terrible! She daydreams, she breaks dishes, and her cooking is awful. Still, she hardly deserves to be sold off to the mean-spirited miller and his family. Refusing to accept that dreadful fate, she decides to flee. With her best friend, Kai, and his sister, Karina, beside her, Lilia heads north to find the family she's never known. But danger awaits. . . .

As their quest leads the threesome through the mysterious and sinister Bitra Forest, they suddenly realize they are lost in the elves' domain. To Lilia's horror, Kai falls under an enchantment cast by the Elf King's beautiful daughter. The only way for Lilia to break the spell and save Kai is to find a jewel of ancient power that lies somewhere in the North Kingdoms. Yet the jewel will not be easy to find. The castle where it is hidden has been overrun with princess hopefuls trying to pass a magical test that will determine the prince's new bride. Lilia has only a few days to search every inch of the castle and find the jewel-or Kai will be lost to her forever.

Stanley, the Stalwart Dragon: The Fabled Forest Series ReviewThis book has an excellent story line that children of all ages can enjoy. The characters are well defined and lively. The plot tells a story and teaches a lesson. What I enjoyed most was the visual imagery that was throughout the story. As an educator, I could see how this book could be use to stimulate a child's ability to make pictures in their mind. The descriptions of the settings and the characters were vivid. They screamed out for a child to illustrate the pictures that were made by the words. I can't wait to use this story with my classes at school.Stanley, the Stalwart Dragon: The Fabled Forest Series OverviewStanley, a young dragon has run away from home.He feels that he is a failure. As dragons go, he probably is.He's kind, soft spoken, a good friend and cannot, for the life of him, breathe FIRE! Emma, an earthling girl, plays in the woodland forest next to her farm.The loveable villain is a raven named City Slick, the Third. A lady bug, named Persnickety is Stanley's best friend and side kick.Thomas, the sea turtle, and Cheets, the elf, are just a few of Stanley's new friends.Slick lures Stanley away from the forest and sells him to a circus. It is Donald, a faerie, and Emma's quest to find Stanley and rescue him. The fable addresses bigotry and kindness to others even though they might be different from us. While this is an adventure story and full of laughter, it teaches children that no matter what, it is never a good idea to run away from home and is frequently very dangerous.

The Man in the Cinder Clouds ReviewTHE MAN IN THE CINDER CLOUDS is one of those middle grade books that the grown-ups get sucked into along with their kids. You think you bought if for your young reader but after you browse chapter one you just sort of... can't stop.
For the kids: The story starts with an adventure gone dreadfully boring as a boy accompanies his dad on an expedition to the North Pole. He discovers that the exotic location can't overcome the drudgery of hanging out with scientists for a few weeks, even if Santa Claus is reputed to live somewhere nearby. The scientists make a discovery in the ice, though, that captures not only Jason's imagination but everyone else's. For one thing, not even the scientists can figure out why the book they've found appears to each person in his native language.
If the book they've uncovered is what it seems, it tells the tale of how Santa Claus came to be the figure we all know today. The traditions and images we associate with Santa are all rooted in his first Christmas venture to find one example of goodness in humanity. He fulfills his own quest while helping a brother and sister who desperately need an ally.
For the grown-ups: THE MAN IN THE CINDER CLOUDS is intricate, with two stories unfolding together as Jason discovers the history of Santa Claus and the children in the Santa story overcome their own hardship by taking care of each other. It's also funny, with humor and references the kids will get but doesn't rely on lowbrow jokes that an older reader would just find silly. The wit shines through in chapter one and the story carries you right through to the end.
I'm going to recommend this one to my school librarian as well as my kid's teachers. Charming, satisfying, warm, and plain old fun to read.The Man in the Cinder Clouds OverviewThe freezing temperature is the only thing cool about Jason's trip to the North Pole, but things heat up when his father discovers a book buried deep in the ice.This is no ordinary book, mind you. For starters, it was written by an Elf. And if that's not enough, the book proves the existence of Kris Kringle-you know, Santa Claus.Born human but abandoned as a baby, Kris is rescued by Elfs and grows up among them'but he doesn't really fit in. Kris embarks on a quest to find his true family among the humans by delivering presents on Christmas day. But there's a catch: the High Council of Elfs is convinced humans are wicked at heart, and Kris can't return to his Elfin home unless he can prove otherwise. His journey takes him all the way to the legendary Great Northern Glen, and from there to the town of Oldenton, where he finds two orphans who are about to lose everything they have to a greedy uncle.With only days before Christmas, Kris must try to help the kids, deliver his presents, find his family, and prove that human virtue does exist'even in the most unexpected of human hearts.

Elf Love: An Anthology ReviewElf Love is a great anthology for any fantasy afficionado. Pink Narcissus's first effort is a sampling of fiction from a wide variety of authors embarking on their literary careers, from a high school student to a professional visual artist to a college professor, and many points between.
While for many of the authors these shorts represent their first opportunity at publication, the work is anything but amateurish. The collection represents virtually every genre that the "elf love" theme could possibly be applied to: high fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, fairy tale, noir mystery, saga, even sci-fi. Nor is the theme followed too strictly: make no mistake that "love" is here interpreted in every possible way, from the romantic to the purely sensual, including some potentially disturbing combinations and a fair helping of fantasy violence.
Editors Mambert et al have done a great job of tying these disparate tales together to form a cohesive collection, while maintaining a lightness and sense of vairiety that makes for a truly entertaining read.
