The Fairy Rebel ReviewDon't be fooled by the slim length and simple, straightforward telling of this story-- this is a treat for adults as well as for children. The simplicity of the storytelling reminds me of the Mary Poppins books-- there's more here than meets the eye.
I especially love that the story begins by telling us that if we go to school in London we might meet a little girl called Bindi, with an unusual history. That immediately makes this world of magic "real!"
Unusually for a children's book, the story begins by having us empathize with Jan, a sad bride and former child actress whose career was cut short by a leg injury, and who wants more than anything else to have a child. She is out in the garden weeping over her loneliness when she is startled by Tiki, a fairy who has been "earthed" (i.e., touched a human) when she couldn't follow her friend Wiljic through Jan's toes. Wiljic is mischievous and knew that Tiki was too fat to get through!
Tiki is wearing jeans under her frilly fairy skirt, although it's forbidden by the fairy queen-- "we love her"-- Tiki says loudly-- and fascinated by Jan's loneliness and tears. The lovely insouciance of all of the fairies-- when we eventually meet Wiljic it's too discover he longs for savory foods like boiled egg and is sick of nectar and nasturtium-- is just one of the many details that lend reality to this story. We also know right away that there is trouble in fairyland if the queen makes her subjects so nervous.
Tiki arranges for Jan to have a fairy baby (start a pregancy with a little help) and gets herself and Wiljic in trouble. Meanwhile, Bindi is a nearly perfect human child, with just a small tuft of blue hair... but the fairy queen has not forgotten the disobediance that led to her birth!
This story has all the elements of classic fairy tales but is set in a recognizable modern world. Characters are drawn quickly but have enormous personality-- in the chapter where Bindi wears a wasp necklace sent by the fairy queen which influences her to misbehave, we quickly get a feeling for her school companions, too. That kind of clear, sharp writing reminds me a bit of Lewis and the Narnian chronicles.
My only complaint about this book is that it isn't longer-- although it's just the length it needs to be!
A must-read for anyone needing a smile and a flash of delight.The Fairy Rebel Overview

Fairies and Elves (Fantasy Chronicles) ReviewIf you think fairies are just those magical little creatures that dance in flower gardens you are sadly mistaken. Of course "no one has ever proven that fairies or elves are real," but they do have a long and mysterious history that began in the 1300s. In Shakespearian times the words fairies and elves were actually words for the same thing and the only difference was that elves were considered to be a "bit smaller than fairies." Most people these days have a positive image of these lovely little creatures, but many years ago it would bring back luck upon you if you so much as talked about them. People actually had strategies to keep the evil ones away. Wooooooo!
This booked is packed with information for the fairy lover and, if you don't like them you can read up on a few strategies to keep them at bay. It has been said that they cannot be trusted. You can read about a boy named Robin Jones who unwittingly followed some dancing fairies into Fairyland and was never seen again. You will learn about fairies around the world, their different physical characteristics, vengeful fairies, evil fairies (Unseelie), gentle fairies (Seelie), fairies who steal human children, when people started to not believe in fairies, naughty and nice fairies, why we call some stories "fairy tales," why you should stay silent if a fairy helps you, how some fairies enjoy being tricksters, the tale of a "pixie-led" farmer, "fairy foolery," modern day fairies, the Cottingley Fairies, the "mummified fairy," book fairies and more!
This was a very whimsical and charming book to read. I loved not only this history and folklore of fairies, but also the interesting tales illustrating how people viewed them throughout the ages. The writing was fascinating, very clear, concise and it made it a definite page turner. The graphics in this book were amazing and I felt I was in a little dark fairy land while I was reading it. In the back of the book there is an index, a bibliography, and additional recommended book and website resources. Working With Fairies ReviewI enjoyed this book, though I found the sub title a bit misleading about the book's contents. I was expecting to see page upon page of spells and charms but was pleasantly surprised by very thorough history lessons on many of The Wild Folk.
The eight chapters in the book contained a wealth of information of historical accounts of fairies from around the world. Where they live, what they do and how to obtain their help as well as avoid their ire comprised major portions of each chapter.
Chapters were divided into sections like The Other World, Devas and Dryads and Elementals. The last one was the most extensive filling about a third of the book with informational tidbits, poems, meditations, correspondences, and suggested rituals for each of the four Elemental Fae.
I have never been a big "fairy" person per se, but I found the historical accounts fascinating and well worth the read. The glossary in the back was a helpful addition to the book. Keeping track of who's who and what is often difficult in books like these. Having a well-formatted index with easy to read bold headings in the back made it easier to keep track of that.
In the chapter called Fairy Families, I especially liked the listing of the Muses and what their `specialty' was. This is something that I often wanted to know in the past but was unable to find the information as accessible as it is presented in this book. Information such as this is presented in a factual, straightforward manner. The author includes dates, places and names when possible as much of her source material came from historical accounts of `witch' trails.
The recipes included in the book are made with common ingredients for the most part, making it possible for those interested in deepening their relationships with fairies to try their hand at making them.
If you are interested in fairy lore, or want to include fairies as part of your practice, this is a good book with plenty to hold your interest.

It starts with the origin of the term and then documents the development of the ideas and tales of Fairies in many cultures. This book is full of summaries of stories, portions of text in their original language (some of which also appear translated), footnotes to naming conventions, pronunciations, criticisms, etc. I agree with the other reviewer that this book is not for everyone and in many cases is a tough read, but it is well worth it. Clay Characters for Kids ReviewKids are going to love this book - so many wonderful ideas for making their own gifts for family and friends. I think a lot of adults are going to like this book, too. Every project begins with simple steps, but the results are polished and beautiful.
Thirty projects, lots of great basic info about colors, color mixing, making shapes, combining shapes, changing expressions, etc.
Everything is illustrated in imaginative ways - even the basic color wheel is a whimsical thing.
The elves are adorable and the dragon beautiful - a huge range of critters and creatures in between - all appear to be quite do-able.
I think this would be a great book even for an adult who wants to try sculpting/modelling - you'll get some great inspiration from this! Plus, the "story-process" in the second half of the book is terrific and all the pictures are just gorgeous! :)

Lucinda's Secret: Movie Tie-in Edition (The Spiderwick Chronicles) ReviewThe mysterious tale of the Spiderwick legacy continues in the third installment of the Chronicles, as the twins Jared and Simon Grace and their elder sister Mallory run into more members of the faery world in their ongoing study of great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Faery World.
After moving into the Spiderwick Estate with their divorced mother, the three siblings found the secret library of Arthur, who vanished several years ago, leaving only his comprehensive guide to the faery world that surrounds his home. It is this world that the Grace children are gradually getting to know, and already they have a couple of brownie/boggart and hobgoblin friends and an injured griffin in the barn. But it just so happens that after centuries of abuse and destruction, the faeries aren't so keen on humans learning about their world once more, and so are out to stop them by any means possible. Mallory and Simon are rather keen on ridding themselves of the Guidebook and thereby getting themselves out of trouble, but Jared, who feels the study of faeries is the only thing he's been really good at refuses, and instead suggest visiting great-aunt Lucinda, the daughter of Arthur Spiderwick, who might have some answers to their questions.
From the visit at the old person's home to the discovery of an old map in Arthur's libary, the three children decide to set out and discover what actually happened to Arthur. This leads them to the riddle-speaking Phooka (one of the book's best characters yet!) and the court of the noble, beautiful, but extremely suspicious elves, who are the guardians of the realm of faery, and not at all pleased that humans have breached their domain...
I am loving the Spiderwick Chronicles, and personally can't wait until the next installment "The Ironwood Tree" is published, as it promises even more faeries, including dwarfs! As the poem at the back of "Lucinda's Secret" says: "And beneath the old quarry, just outside of town, lives a king with a kingdom, but who wears the crown?" It is almost cruel that publishers make us wait so long.
To a point, "Lucinda's Secret" was not quite up to the success of the two previous books, as the story was quite clearly split into two: the visit to the nursing home, and the trek into the faery realms. Perhaps if they had found the map earlier, and shown it to Lucinda, the book would have felt more fluid. As such, I'm getting a tad concerned at the outcome of this series - its been established that there's only five books in the series, but so far more and more characters and situations are being introduced, with nothing really getting resolved. On top of the theme of the children inflicting on the secret world of the faeries (a theme I thought was more than enough to carry the series along) there were hints here that a good and evil plot strand is arriving soon, with mention of one Mulgarath the ogre gathering malevolent forces to him. Of course, its rather useless worrying about it yet, but I'd hate to be disappointed in this great series, and the sheer shortness of the books (I read "Lucinda's Secret in half an hour) means that there's a lot of ground to cover in the remaining two books, and I'd hate to see Thimbletack, Hogsqueal, Byron or the Phooka shortchanged in wrapping up the story.
Likewise, the promised "Lucinda's Secret" wasn't so much of a startling revelation than simply a little background to the Spiderwick family and reassurting what the children already know - not much of a secret! However, the faery lore that Holly Black places within the context of the story is truly wonderful - any long time scholars of faeries will delight in seeing the dangers of faery food, the technique of wearing one's clothes worn inside out, the faery use of stray sods and the power imbued in a name put to good use. And Tony DiTerlizzi's illustrations are an absolute delight. The beautifully clear and intricate pictures perfectly capture what the text describes, and creates what I consider the *real* nature of faery - not a silly, pretty little world, but quirky, intricate, and a little dangerous. Any fans of Brian Froud will adore Tony DiTerlizzi's drawings, and I myself almost wept with delight at his depiction of the unicorn - no sweet little pony, but small and stunted, with lion's paws and tail and a goat's beard: exactly how the original unicorns were depicted.
Finally, the presentation of the book is stunning, especially in regard to the way the author creates it as a 'real story', with the children of the story actually writing to the authors with their story (and their letter is included!) The plot tells a story and teaches a lesson. What I enjoyed most was the visual imagery that was throughout the story. They screamed out for a child to illustrate the pictures that were made by the words. As dragons go, he probably is.He's kind, soft spoken, a good friend and cannot, for the life of him, breathe FIRE! Emma, an earthling girl, plays in the woodland forest next to her farm.The loveable villain is a raven named City Slick, the Third. A lady bug, named Persnickety is Stanley's best friend and side kick.Thomas, the sea turtle, and Cheets, the elf, are just a few of Stanley's new friends.Slick lures Stanley away from the forest and sells him to a circus. It is Donald, a faerie, and Emma's quest to find Stanley and rescue him. The fable addresses bigotry and kindness to others even though they might be different from us. While this is an adventure story and full of laughter, it teaches children that no matter what, it is never a good idea to run away from home and is frequently very dangerous.

Blood Magic (Haven Series #5) ReviewEach book in the Haven series is short, so I read the books back to back in order to make one big fantasy book. Because of this, I am rating the whole series as if it was one book. The Haven series is a great read, and a worthy addition to my Kindle library! Fans of the Fantasy genre will love it, as it includes all the things a fantasy fan craves, without becoming stale and predictable. The many races I have come to know and adore/loathe as this 'book' developed are the Riverfolk, Wee folk, Fae, Kindred, Gnomes, Kobolds, Goblins, Merlings, and the Dead. Though the races are many and varied, the plot never becomes too confusing, and I was always able to keep track of what was going on without difficulty. The author manages to make each race separate and best of all, intriguing. My favorite part of the series was the idea of the jewels of power, and seeing how each jewel worked, and what they could do. It was interesting to see how each race was affected by who had which jewel, and to see all the consequences. There was great character development and great race development throughout the series. I enjoyed the characters immensely, though they all have their flaws. There is one thing that I noticed throughout the series, and that was sub par editing (that being said...sorry for any grammar mistakes I've made in this review!). It DID NOT detract from the story in any way, though, so it didn't bother me. I can't wait to read what is next by this author.
