The Crimson Shadow ReviewBefore I picked up this trilogy, I had heard whispers of Luthien and his halfling companion Oliver DeBurrows. Then I actually read the trilogy. I was surprised. Salvatore is well known for great characters, and in this trilogy he doesn't dissapoint, especially with Oliver (who he actually roleplayed for along time) The only character I wasn't too fond of was the half-elf, but she grew on me. The story itself was good as well, though at parts it did seem kind of rushed. Anyways, the Crimson Shadow trilogy is something that Salvatore fans, and fantasy fans will enjoy.The Crimson Shadow OverviewTHE CRIMSON SHADOW is an omnibus reissue of R.A. Road of the Patriarch (Forgotten Realms: The Sellswords, Book 3) ReviewRoad to the Patriarch by R.A. Salvatore is the third, and final, book in the Sellswords Trilogy. The first being Servant of the Shard and the Second being Promise of the Witch-King. This book takes place right after the events of Promise of the Witch-King and continues the tale of Jarlaxle and Artemis and their journey together as Artemis seeks to come to grips with his past.
As with most Salvatore books this one has a decent mix of characters and plot, however, no matter how well constructed this plot is - this book is largely about character development. Fans of Salvatore have watched both Jarlaxle and Artemis grow as characters through several books, aside from the Drizzt books, the growth of Artemis in this book may be the single biggest development in a character in one book I have read in a long time. We learn a little about Jarlaxle's past, but this book focuses mainly on Artemis. Jarlaxle is merely along for the ride. There are some things in this book that are not usually found in Forgotten Realms books, some of the content - but to say more about that would be giving spoilers. I will say that the journey that Artemis undertakes in the second half of this book is gritty and filled with heartache.
The plot of this book can really be divided into two parts. The first part focuses on Jarlaxle and Artemis' time dealing with Grandmaster Kane and the Citadel of Assassins in the Bloodstone Lands, while the second half focuses quite a bit of Artemis' individual journey that leads to some shocking moments. I will say that the second half of the book seemed, at times, slightly rushed. Mostly because Salvatore knew what he wanted to happen and needed to fit it all in. I am guessing this book could have been 400+ pages easily. The plot is well laid out and everything that happens makes perfect sense. Salvatore obviously invested a great deal of time making sure the story stayed true to the characters and their situation. This allows the reader to care that much more about what is going on in the story.
Salvatore has a knack for weaving a believable story with characters that seem so real. We all know Artemis is a very skilled assassin, yet, while reading this book you can't help but care deeply for his story and his past and how that played a part in who he is. If you are looking for large scale battles, this book may be a disappointment to you. If you are looking for wizard battles and lots of magic, this book may be a disappointment to you. However, if you are looking for an excellently crafted character driven story, I am pretty you will enjoy this. This is classic Salvatore and fans will surely find something in this book to enjoy.
Fans of the Forgotten Realms and Salvatore will find this book and enjoy it. New fans would be encouraged to go back and read the rest of Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books before reading this one, that way all the events and discussions will make more sense. However, picking up the Sellsword Trilogy should be ok as well. I will continue to recommend Salvatore as an author I enjoy a great deal. This was a ride well worth taking.

The Sundered Arms (Dungeons & Dragons Novel) ReviewWhen a chapter is titled "Dissention" (sic), you know the editor is asleep at the switch. There are unfortunately more instances of bad grammar, as well as a quote from The Empire Strikes Back that take this from an average dungeon crawl to less than average.
We have three returning characters, Devis the half-elf Bard, Vadania the druid and Lidda the halfing rogue. Vadania and Lidda are uncharacteristically besotted with Devis though they are both experienced enough to know better, particularly Vadania. Tordek a dwarven fighter is the new iconic addition and Vadania is given a wolverine companion.
That being said, the actual adventure is fairly good. Some really powerful enemies and enchanted weapons with a satisfying ending. It is really too bad that this series suffers from an editor who shows such disregard to the readers by allowing such continuity and basic english mistakes.The Sundered Arms (Dungeons & Dragons Novel) OverviewThis title chronicles the latest adventure of various iconic characters from the Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks. The Fallen Fortress (Forgotten Realms: The Cleric Quintet, Book 4) ReviewI should first say that I grew up on Salvatore's books and have always considered him as a master of fantasy writing... until I read this one. Having enjoyed Canticle, been ok with In Sylvan Shadows, and absolutely loved the concept of the Ghearufu in Night Masks - The Fallen Fortress, as title suggests, fell flat on its face.
Suddenly, Cadderly's steady growth as a character ground to a flat halt. In Fallen Fortress, he is omniscient, all-powerful, etc, etc. He can do anything; nothing affects him. The rendition of his emotional turmoil in this book is flat and hard to sympathize with. This makes for very boring reading. Maturity of characters? I don't think so - everyone here is predictable and does not grow.
Plotwise, there is nothing interesting - there is nothing to match the invention of Cadderly's yo-yo or crossbow in the earlier books, or the originality of the evil artifact mentioned above. Instead, potential plotlines are disappointingly dashed aside. Eg. I was intrigued when a certain villain "came back" - that would have made perfect material for advancing the plot. But instead, the book kills him off unceremoniously, without exploiting his potental (to the plot) - what a waste.The Fallen Fortress (Forgotten Realms: The Cleric Quintet, Book 4) OverviewR.A. Locked Inside ReviewLocked Inside is about a sixteen year old girl name Marnie. Her mother had died 5 years ago and her guardian is a man name Max. Marnie goes to this boarding school, she isn't studying as hard as she should be and ends up not doing well in school. She spends most of her time playing this game online with is guy identified as Elf. After her mother's death, Marnie hasn't really want anyone to get close to her, bascially like disconnecting herself from the world. She soons get kidnap by her teacher name Ms. Slaight where she also meets the guy name Elf in person. I don't want to disappoint anyone by telling the ending so read it to find out. This is an excellent book and I recommend people from ages 12 and up. I really like this book because the author is telling everyone a very important message. I can't wait to read The Killer's Cousin. I have read a lot reviews saying that it is an outstanding book even better than this one. Anyways this is a really REALLY superb book and I hope you read it, you won't be disappointed.Locked Inside Overview

Immortalis (The Second DemonWars Saga, Book 3) ReviewIn this final volume of the Demon Wars saga, Salvatore delivers a truly great story. Combining the settings and storylines of the two previous books, Mortalis and Transcendence, Salvatore succeeds in wrapping up many storylines.
In the northern kingdom of Honce-the-Bear, Aydrian, the son of Pony and Elbryan, is consolidating his rule while striking out in new directions. He sends forces to the southern land of Behren, where Brynn Dharielle threw off the tyranny of the capital Jacintha and plunged that kingdom into chaos. Aydrian's forces are perhaps too ambitious, and Brynn's To-Gai-Ru get involved with resisting the northerners, along with her faithful companions Pagonel (an excellent character reminiscent of other Salvatore characters) and Agradeleous the Dragon.
In the north, Pony seeks to warn her friends of the danger of her son, after he let her go free. She also seeks something of retribution from the elves for their misguided rearing of him.
Prince Midalis, the rightful king after Aydrian the usurper killed Midalis' brother, is rallying allies to oppose the ambitious boy. His distance from the seat of power and lack of numbers does not fare well for him.
The elves are faced with a danger unlike any they have ever faced, in a demon-corrupted boy of incalculable power who knows where they live and hates them. The result of his vengeful attacks comes back to haunt him.
There are MANY instances of remarkable and heroic self-sacrifice, though too much success for those who work evil. There is a gathering in this book of heroes, a gathering perhaps unmatched since Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring (Please note that I am not making a comparison here, simply trying to cite a previous example of a large band of larger-than-life heroes that readers might identify). Opposing them, however, is an array of evil that in many ways equals them. Miscalculations, overestimations, and plain old mistakes combine with derring-do, cunning and courage to bring about the resolution of the many conflicts in this storyline. Note that many threads are not completely resolved, perhaps being saved for a new series.
There were points in this book that I thought were too like Mortalis, in which evil simply seemed unstoppable and would win the day. The glimmers of light through that dark cloud are too few. I can say that the final 250 pages or so were riveting. The stage had been set and the action and scheming were nearly unrelenting. There are some telling losses, but also some great victories. There was a surprising number of grammar errors and typos, which I felt did detract slightly from the enjoyment, but near the end I did not notice them as the story was too gripping. The ending is so heartwrenching that I cannot really describe it.

Luthiens Gamble (Crimson Shadow) ReviewR.A. Salvatore proves with this book that he was, at the time, running short on original ideas. Drizzt is my favorite character of all time, so I am fully aware of Salvatore's talents, but this book is lacking - much like the others in the series. For starters, there are just TOO many similarities to Tolkien to be ignored - the names Luthien and Eriador have been ripped right out of Middle-earth. The battle with the dragon is clearly the confrontation between Smaug and Bilbo modified to fit into Salvatore's story. And lastly, the character Brind'Amore, though a decent character, seems very much akin to Gandalf and therefore lacks in originality. The two major things that make this book worth reading, however, are Salvatore's trademark action scenes and the wonderful "highway-halfling," Oliver De'Burrows. But if you haven't read any of the Drizzt books, read them instead.Luthiens Gamble (Crimson Shadow) OverviewIn this sequel to The Sword of Bedwyr, the Crimson Shadow must rouse the peasants and fierce tribes of Eriador to fight the demonic Wizard-King Greensparrow's bloodthirsty warriors and save their beloved city of Caer MacDonald.

Salvatore has shown us that he still has the ability to write a great adventure after doubts sprung from the continuation of the legendary Drizzt saga which is beginning to spiral out of control. The book follows a well structured path which leaves the reader spending countless hours turning page after page with no realisation of time. The Demon Spirit (The DemonWars Trilogy, Book 2) ReviewI just literally finished reading The Demon Spirit about two minutes ago. While I was expecting a good read, I wasn't expecting one quite of this calibre.
The description of this book sounded something like that of the first one. The Goblins/Powries are still rampaging, Elbryan & Pony are still fighting, and Markwart (I don't feel right giving him the title of Abbot) is still scheming to get those stones back, and has made not one, but two Brothers Justice.
But this book takes entirely different turns from the first one. And it was even darker, which in itself is quite astonishing. (Though not so much so that you are left without hope, even at the end)
About the only real complaints I have with this one is the battles. They are well written, in the usual Bob style, but I felt that there were too many, particularly near the beginning of the book. But this is very much a minor complaint in what is otherwise an excellent novel.
Arguably, this was the best book thus far in Salvatore's career. (Though I really liked Homeland)
And to think that the next book is due out any day now...

Annihilation: War of the Spider Queen, Book V (R.A Salvatore Presents the War of the Spider Queen) ReviewThis is - in my opinion - the WORST book in the series. Be warned!
Where previous books were maintaining a clear and consistent tone in terms of charactes, this one is just WAY off.
The characters seem to converse in much different manner, more simplifieg, often childish, lacking the depth and substance that the in the previous books.
Nearly ALL conversations are broken up - it's very annoying, tiring, and makes the story hard to follow.
Quenthel telling Pharaun "I hate you" close to the beginning of the book dispels the magic that the previous four books have successfully woven together.
This book is filled with this type of "gems" that made me wonder if author actually read the previous ones before sitting down and writing it.
The characters also are reacting and thinking differently, almost as if they had personality changes.
While I understand different authors' styles, this book has offered the least consistency in the character department.
After blazing my way 4 books back-to-back, I have lost interest in the story because of this single book.
The book also has several continuity issues that have not been quite addressed. Those of us that do remember what happened in the previous parts of the storey, can spot those easily.
Honestly, it makes me wonder whether this was a first attempt of the author into writing, it was so bad. ARGH!

The Demon Awakens (DemonWars) ReviewI've been a Salvatore fan since I first read the Icewind Dale Trilogy, and I actually am enjoying this series a little more. The story follows Elbryan, a youth in Dundalis who is left orphaned after his town is sacked by goblins and giants, Pony, Elbryan's playmate and love interest who grew up with him, and Avelyn a monk studying the magic holy stones in the Abellican church. They all come together and must face off against an evil demon dactyl that is gathering an army of powries, which are evil bloodthirsty dwarves, goblins, and giants.
The transitions between each character work well by chapter, and you really end up caring about each of the main characters. The difference between this and the Drizzt novels is that all the charactes are vunerable. In other words, some of the characters you come to love may not last, let's just leave it at that.
The only problems are the usual problems with Salvatore's writing, overuse of certain words (ex. stoic, stoically...). It's a small price to pay for such a fun and exciting book. The holy stones make magic seem new and interesting also.
Definitely pick up this book if you have the chance, you won't regret it.The Demon Awakens (DemonWars) Overview

Earthbound ReviewArtemis Greenleaf (no relation to me!) has done a splendid job writing about an Irish girl who dies young and stays at the farm to watch over her sister and father. An interesting collection of friendly (and not so friendly!) spirits round out the story.
A nice story for all ages, with a few life lessons thrown in. Warmly recommended by me. Sudden Light: Donegal's NovelEarthbound OverviewSchuyler Ramsey just wants to be like the other kids in school. Too bad she's dead. She haunts a farm in windswept western Ireland, along with some of its previous inhabitants. When she partially materializes in front of her sister at breakfast, she is propelled on a quest to stop a fake TV psychic and ghost hunter from visiting the farm and stirring up trouble. Along the way, she visits a famous pirate, helps a mermaid rescue a basking shark from fishermen, and encounters Nicniven, queen of the dark elphs. But Schuyler soon finds that the Haunted Planet television show is the least of her problems. As her world unravels, can she find the strength to save her sister from a monstrous terror?

Prince of the Elves (The Frontmire Histories - Book I) ReviewPrince of the Elves was a good read. While it contains all the fantasy elements such as Elves, Giants, Faerie, Dwarves, Trolls and magic there are often surprises that defy sterotypes. Readers of Tolkein and Robert Jordan will enjoy this saga.
Jehard's quest is filled with the unexpected. The companions he picks up along the way are likeable and well developed. I especially like the way the female characters are defined. It is interesting to watch Jehard mature during his trek.
I am looking forward to the next books. I find myself wondering about some of the lesser characters and hope to see them developed into stronger characters in future releases. The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries ReviewThis book was written in the early twentieth century, and my opinion is that no faery book has yet been written to equal it. Evans-Wentz was a sophisticated scholar, and yet treated faery beliefs with the utmost of respect, and even devoted a chapter to scientific and psychological findings that render such beliefs valid. Without looking down his nose on anyone (except maybe stuffy fellow scholars who lost their imagination somewhere along the line), he reports stories of faery encounters in every Celtic nation. He interviewed great numbers of Celtic people in his travels, and collected a vast treasure trove of tales. These range from firsthand accounts to "a friend of a friend" legends to stories handed down through the generations.
After presenting a mass of information on the modern faery faith, he goes on to relate the ancient faery beliefs held by the Celts of old, as recorded in their mythology. Many pages are devoted to the adventures of CuChulainn, Arthur, Bran, and other figures who moved in and out of the Otherworld. He also discusses the Otherworld itself, the misty land where the faeries, the gods, and the dead dwelled. Especially stunning is his assertion that the Celts participated in mysteries much like those of Eleusis. The mythological evidence IS THERE, as Evans-Wentz proves. I only wish someone in those days had written something down to indicate whether or not this is true!
This is the best book ever written on the fae, IMHO. It ought to be on every Celtophile's shelf right next to Squire's _Celtic Myth and Legend_. As a matter of fact, the two books make excellent companions for one another.The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries OverviewThis is one of the most in-depth and scholarly attempts to explain the phenomena of the Celtic belief in fairies. Based on Evans-Wentz' Oxford doctoral thesis, it includes an extensive survey of the literature from many different perspectives, including folk-lore, history, anthropology and psychology. The heart of the book is the ethnographic fieldwork conducted by Evans-Wentz, an invaluable snapshot of the fairy belief system taken just on the cusp of modernity. There are regional surveys of the fairy-faith in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany and the Isle of Man. Evan-Wentz later went on to become one of the leading authorities on Buddhism, and published many of the key documents of Tibetan Buddhism including the Tibetan Book of the Dead.Evans-Wentz examines each of the hypothetical explanations of the fairy phenomena. Among these are the theories that fairies were a reclusive race of dwarfs, that they are disembodied spirits, or that they are a figment of our imaginations. Evans-Wentz concludes that they may indeed be a manifestation of inhabitants of a higher reality that only some of us are able to view, let alone understand.We come away from this study with a multi-dimensional view of the fairies, who, much like the grey aliens of UFO belief, inhabit a narrative which seems too consistent to be the product of insanity, yet too bizarre for conventional explanation.--J.B. Bane of Existence ReviewThis book may not be for everyone, after all it contains both drugs, death and same sex love, but I loved it. It is not a simple book, and the caracters in it does not have a simple road to follow. I love the complexity of Bane and Kel, and also all the other caracters. I find myself wanting to know what will happen to them next...

Black Frost ReviewOverall Feedback: As with all of his novels thus far Conroe exceeds expectations and does a fine job with entertaining us for another chapter in the Demon Accord Series. I would not rate this as the best in the series but I still think it is well worth the read.
Point of View: Only adds to the storyline and stays within the concept of the series.
Voice: Stays in line with the series and drives the reader through in a flash.
Character Development: By now we already know the characters but just when you are happy in your knowledge Conroe brings in some more details.
Plot: Perfectly aligned with the series and shows that the Author paid attention to the series overall and not just to each story. Only issue is some things were left unsaid and a novice gun owner would be a bit confused.
Dialogue: Flawless as expected by this author.
Pacing: Again lightning fast and over before you want it to be.
Setting: Conroe is excellant at placing characters in a believable place, time and circumstance.
Continuity: Does not miss a beat and drives home the thought and I my opinion view of the story. "How would you deal with loss?"Black Frost OverviewWhat would you do to protect a loved one? Would you kill? Widower Ian Moore will do almost anything to protect his daughter from a threat that comes straight out of our darkest fairytales.If he has his way he'll prove that Ashley was the absolutely worst target they could have picked.In fact, you might want to take notes, 'cause your family may be next.
