Night Elves: Wicked Pleasures ReviewI didn't find this to be an especially memorable book. The plot was weak and the sex scenes were pretty tame for an erotica.
The heroine wasn't as freaked out as she should have been, and she was pretty accepting of her situation and her relationship with the hero too quickly. Then, suddenly, she develops this incredible power because she's a descendant (reincarnation?) of one of their ancients? Where did that come from? And, while there was sex in this book, I would not say it was "erotic".
It ended with the implication that there would be a second book, but I was so unimpressed by this one that I won't be buying the sequel. Dark Elves: Taken ReviewFirst off, I want to say that this opinion is mine alone and I expect no one to agree with me, or disagree as the case may be. I just want to lay down some thoughts to help anyone else who may be considering purchasing this book. Anyway, to the review!
Wow. You know, I don't expect a whole lot in a book, but, I do find it interesting and handy to at least get a description of the main character before the erotica starts. Tall, thin, fat, short, blonde, red head. Something. What you will get from this book is... female, and dark brows. Eh? What? You usually get more of a description from the stories in Penthouse forum. The print in the book is big, widely spaced, and they get down to naughty action by page 7. Enough said.
If you want a book that doesn't mess around with nonsense such as description and gets right to the primal action. This book is for you. If you are like me, and want to be swept into a fictional world where interesting characters with at least a little depth interact with one another, just skip this one and save your money. I do love the elves and find R.A. Salvatore's books better. Counterpoint (Book I of Song of the Fallen) ReviewAyden is an elf and Freyrik is a human. They live in a time of chaos - war always pressing and hatred running high. Hundreds of years of bad blood and contempt between human and elf have left the world vulnerable. When Freyrik's men capture Ayden he wonders why he feels immediately drawn to him. Ayden agrees to be Freyrik's slave to save his sister - but as time passes how does he fight his growing attraction to a human - and not only attraction but admiration - for Rik's great care for his people stuns Ayden. As politics, intrigue and danger dance closely together will this slave conquer his master or will the master become the slave?
So first I do not read much what I consider "high" fantasy - mostly just Tolkien and a few others. If I read fantasy it's normally paranormal or urban and comes with biting and shifting. From the first moment I started reading Counterpoint I was completely captivated by the story. For what appears to be a first effort this novel is spellbinding. The language is lyrical and perfectly fits the story and the dialogue is sharp, witty, and very in tune with creating the tension that a reader loves to really immerse into the story. Ayden, as an 800 year old elf, always has a snarky comment and Freyrik is always struggling between his desire to do what he wants and the responsiblity to do what he must. It seems neither will bend - yet there are occasional hints that speak of something underneath the surface - and the tension created keeps you completely on your toes waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.
The characters have such depth as to cement their places in your heart and mind seamlessly. The story of the world Ayden and Freyrik live in is painted vividly - a master stroking the canvas. There is a perfect blend of show and tell - neither taking precedence over the other. The story sweeps you along and propels you forward and nothing mars that feeling of taking a ride down the river and just living with these people - being part of their world.
I think my heart was racing more than Ayden and Freyrik when they first made love. It was beautiful and ethereal and sublime. Like everything else in this book each part fits together in harmony - and that is a feat for any author. I noted several places where things could have broken down but the writing stayed strong and never gave in to cliche or hackneyed plot device. My only complaint is the cliffhanger ending - now I cannot wait for Part 2!

Fairy tales and dark fantasy done the right way make a formidable combo. Add Goldie McBride's straightforward and wonderfully picturesque writing style to the mix, along with a fascinating montage of characters going up against despicable villains, and all I can say is that Lamentation of Swans will put Fed Ex out of business when it comes to delivery.
There's tragedy, passion, adventure, and an array of things I'd rather not divulge. Dark themes transpire, matched by beauty and quirky twists to thicken up the plot soup. As for the characters, forget everything you know about unicorns, dark elves, dragons, and rescuing maidens. This is not a sticky sweet romantic tale where good and evil collide. I'm thankful for the author's originality and the fact that she was willing to stretch the limits. I wasn't always sure if I liked Caelin, Faine, and Drake; sometimes I grew impatient at the way Gwyneth accepted whatever came her way. Yet, Ms. McBride has her pen on the pulse point of the story and she made me feel every step of their journey until I grew to care.
Lamentation of Swans is remarkably inventive, soaring and subsiding towards a perfect landing with characters that break the boring mold. If that's not enough, then the cover featuring Caelin and the sizzling sex is sure to make you break out in a sweat.Patrice F.
