The Annotated legends (Dragonlance Legends) ReviewThe Legends Trilogy definitely deserves a 5-star rating. I rate this edition as 3-star strictly because of the annotations.
Legends follows up the great Chronicles trilogy, with Raistlin, Caramon, and Tas embarking on a time-traveling adventure with enormous consequences for the entire world of Krynn. The story takes on a much more personal feeling in Legends, with the focus being narrowed to a few key characters and the plot seemingly less epic than the previous trilogy (even though the events have a larger potential impact on the world). This trilogy also has a darker and more serious feel, with much more emotional clarity and desperate circumstances. The characters are forced to make difficult sacrifices and each seems to fight their own form of depression.
The main premise focuses on Raistlin's efforts to become the most powerful mage of all time and challenge the gods themselves. Caramon and Crysiana fight their own personal battles to discover themselves and achieve peace with the world. Tas basically tags along in innocent curiosity and a desire to help his friends.
The annotations of this version add nothing to the story. I was hoping for interesting insights from the authors telling about their views of what the various characters are thinking or what really happened in alluded to events. Instead you get a whole bunch of repetitive and obvious commentary along with self-important glorifications of the authors' talent and foresight. This was my fourth journey through the Legends trilogy and it was by far the least enjoyable due to the distracting influence of pointless annotations. You would think that you'd be able to just ignore the commentary, but its impossible as you keep telling yourself that there must be at least a little useful information only to be disappointed time and again.

When Santa Fell To Earth ReviewBen is just beginning to get excited about the forthcoming holiday season, when he learns that his parents have decided to forgo the chilly weather, and head to a tropical environment where they can hang out in the sun, and sip fruity drinks. Cornelia Funke is certainly one of the most intrepid new fantasy writers to hit the scene in years, and the release of her holiday novel, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH, only illustrates that fact even more. Funke's trademark magical scenes, and enchanting moments prevail in this fantastical account of two children looking to help the "real" Santa Claus save Christmas. Funke adds her own little touches regarding the holidays, from making Niklas Goodfellow look quite different from what Santa Claus is known to look like; to giving the elves snippy personalities laced with bad language and fierce tempers. The angels Matilda and Emmanuel are saintly characters, whose good-natured, loving attitudes stay true to the spirit of Christmas; while the marzipan-loving Twinklestar is a supreme trouble maker, who you can't help but love. The friendship that develops between Ben and the unlikely Charlotte is quite a treat to witness; while the snowy world of Yule Land is a beauty all in itself. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations (sometimes full-page ones) by Paul Howard, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH is a wonderful, fantastical joyride into the world of Santa Claus, and the many hardships he encounters each year. An unstoppable holiday thrill ride that will leave everyone in the Christmas spirit!

Herlund weaves thru out the tale wonderful life lessons for our youth to learn or us aged to be reminded of in terms of the beauty of the light, of nature, of community and commitment to those we love (all of which seems to be in short supply in our lifes today).
I am fortunate as a mother of a 10 year old girl and 12 year old son to have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Herlund personally and buying 3 copies, one for each of us, but as a mother of 49 and a regular reviewer on Amazon I felt it necessary to be the first to rant and rave about this new masterpiece with six more promised in the works. One copy for my family was not enough so to keep the peace so I bought three!!The World of Illusions: The Wise and the Mighty OverviewThis is not simply a story of grand adventures, wizards and magic, but a record of the author's memories of the future brought into the present through the dimensions of time. Krondor the Betrayal:: Book One of the Riftwar Legacy ReviewThe problem with this book is that it reads like a computer game. It lacks depth of character and atmosphere; the conversation is stilted, the achievements superhuman. The plot is formulaic, and obviously leads from fact finding to consequential action. If you played the game (which I haven't) you probably get to "practice" killing the bad guys - if you fail, you can always start again from where you last saved. The game, no doubt, has some level of challenge to it. The book doesn't.
I can see what Feist was trying to do here - continue a line of books with what must be one of my favourite characters, Jimmy the Hand. Put James in a tight spot and he'll invariably get out. Tragically, the squire totally lacks any hint of personality in this book and the two sequels. Mr Feist, as a WRITER, could have used a little more imagination to pull the reader into a fantastic story. Instead he follows the rather basic plot line of a simple computer game.
Sadly, this sub-series does not improve with time. It gets worse. I'm currently reading book three: Krondor, Tear of the Gods. It's so bad, I'm considering not finishing it at all (which would be the first for a Feist book for me ... I love the guy).
The first book and even the second at least deal with elements roughly defined within Feist's series on Midkemia: the Oracle, the stone at Sethanon, dark elves, etc. The third borders on the ludricous - vampires in Midkemia? ... honestly!... Obviously, the game developers took over and Mr. Feist took a back seat in his own world.
I'm actually quite outraged that this series was published at all. They should have left it as a game and not bothered with this half-hearted attempt at a book. I've never quite felt so cheated of my money before --- and that is probably Mr Feist's greatest accomplishment in this trilogy.Krondor the Betrayal:: Book One of the Riftwar Legacy Overview

Bearing An Hourglass (Incarnations of Immortality, Book 2) Review"Bearing an Hourglass" is the second volume of Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, dealing with the Incarnation of Time. The series began successfully with "On a Pale Horse", but this instalment is a little more cautious in approach, and suffers somewhat from sequel syndrome.
Like several other characters from the Incarnations series, Norton is just an ordinary man who unexpectedly has the mantle of Chronos (Time) thrust upon him. He must learn to fulfil the duties of his office and deal with its peculiarities- such as living backwards in time!
The temporal quirks and paradoxes that Norton must explore create some added interest in the storyline. Overall, however, the plot lacks the verve and interest of the first book, wandering from the path in places and losing direction.
As a whole, the series is definitely worth reading, and "Bearing an Hourglass" is worth reading as a part of the series. As a stand-alone volume, however, it doesn't quite satisfy. Read it in context: the complex interlinking plots of the seven books that make up the Incarnations series are partially explained by this book, but it remains one of the weaker links in the series.

The other seemingly all-powerful incantations of Immortality--Death, Fate, War, and Nature--made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps and he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good....

Once a Hero ReviewI started reading this book very critically because I feel that a lot of the Star Wars / Star Trek / Dragonlance / Forgotten Realms / RPG novels are extremely poorly written. Michael Stackpole has a background writing RPG games (very good ones, I might add), Star Wars and Battletech books. Despite myself, I wasn't expecting much, but what I got was one of the very **best** books I've ever read. Michael Stackpole writes rings around all but the best and the greatest of writers, with whom he stands proudly shoulder to shoulder. "Once A Hero" has started me on an addiction for Michael Stackpole's **stunning** fantasy. I've torn through "Talion: Revenant" and "A Hero Born" as quickly as I could get my hands on them and was not disappointed. Sadly, this book, "Once A Hero" is out of print, although it's readily available online used. Michael Stackpole has other fantasy books in print and if you're a lover of quality, engaging, high-spirited fantasy then you'd be mad not to seek them out. I will read his books over and over again as the years go by. They're that good...Once a Hero Overview

Progeny: The Children of the White Lions ReviewThis is the coming of age story for Nikalys, Kenders and Jak. Their home and village has been devastatingly ripped apart by an unknown elf, causing them to be orphans. Now they must figure out how to bring this elf to justice, as well as cope with who they are. Kenders discovers that she is capable of using the magic strands, only, that is against the law in their land. They must find help soon, or be caught and possibly accused of the devastation in their village. When they meet a silent and powerful stranger on their journey they must decide whether or not to trust him with their lives. It soon becomes apparent that the evil elf is only the tip of the iceberg and that their whole world is in danger.
That is a short encapsulation of a wonderful tale. R. T. Kaelin has created some of the best characters I've read in a long time. Even the evil beings are well rounded and interesting to read about. His world has depth and history and great creativity. Though he uses some of the standard fantasy population, elves, hobbits and orcs, they quickly have a story of their own, becoming unique to this tale.
The one criticism I have is that the characters spend too much time retelling their story as they meet with new people in the book, but that is easily skimmed. I am in wonder that this is the author's first novel, and I eagerly look forward to the next part of the tale.Progeny: The Children of the White Lions OverviewNikalys and his sister Kenders grew up living a peaceful life in the quiet farming village of Yellow Mud' until the blistering hot day when they go to the nearby lake for a swim. When they reach the lake, they spy an unknown mage conjure a massive water creature hundreds of feet tall. They watch in horror as the water creature plunges toward their home, apparently drowning all in its path, including their parents and older brother, Jak.As the only survivors, brother and sister strike out on their own, hoping to discover the reason their home and family was destroyed. They must make their way through a countryside where magic is outlawed, punishable by imprisonment or even death while struggling with the revelation that Kenders has magical abilities herself.Although Kenders can feel and touch the many-colored 'strands" of magic she has no idea how to use them until she and Nikalys are attacked by a pack of wolves and Kenders instinctively summons a bolt of lightning, immediately collapsing when the effort drains her of all her energy.From nowhere a giant lynx appears and saves the pair from certain death and then miraculously morphs into his natural self, a seven-foot-tall man. The shape changer's name is Broedi and when the time is right, he reveals to the siblings that he is one of the original White Lions and he recites to them an ancient prophecy that tells of the coming of a new and even more terrible war than the one centuries ago. The evil Gods of Chaos, Strife, and Sorrow and Pain would combine efforts to unite the orcs, gnolls and razorfiends --- normally sworn enemies.The forces of good would be led by two children of other White Lions; those children are Nikalys and Kenders, the Progeny.As brother and sister struggle with the revelation that the only parents they could remember were not their birth parents, some of the Gods and Goddesses were busy setting other events in motion. Dragon Wing (The Death Gate Cycle, Book 1) ReviewThis series (starting with Dragon Wing, of course) was the first fantasy novel I'd ever read. My husband was "into" fantasy and recommended it to me. It was not what I expected at all and I have read the entire series twice since then.
Dragon Wing is the first of seven novels in the "Death Gate Series." Long ago powerful sorcerers called the Sartans sundered Earth as we know it into four separate planets -- air, fire, stone, and water. Onto each planet they placed dwarves, elves, and humans, and of course many of their kind to watch over everything. They also created a prison world for their ancient enemy, the Patryns. I don't want to give away anything from the novel, but that is the set-up for the series.
A problem with most fantasy novels is the "good vs. evil" plot. It's all so formulaic. Evil is dark, good is light. Even "The Wheel of Time" series and the "Lord of the Rings" series, the two most popular fantasy series, succumb to this pitfalll of fantasy writing. The Death Gate series has a much more intricate plot. There's no "dark one" trying to take over the world. It's more true to life in that there is no clear-cut right and wrong.
If you decide to start this book, I want you to know what you're committing to: after the first fifty pages, you will be sucked in and forced to read the entire series. All other aspects of your life will seem trivial except for what is happening in your book. The plot becomes more and more intricate until everything will suddenly come together marvelously for a beautiful climactic ending.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. This is just a review of the first book. There's only one real problem with the first book: it's not clear who the main character is. First I thought it was the dwarf, then Hugh the Hand. But ignore the review that says it's just a set-up for the series. Actually, the world on which this book takes place is my favorite of the four, because it is the most developed. This is an excellent book to start reading fantasy. The only problem is that it will spoil you. I haven't found any fantasy novel or series that is better, and since The Death Gate Series I have read a lot.

Counterpoint (Book I of Song of the Fallen) ReviewAyden is an elf and Freyrik is a human. They live in a time of chaos - war always pressing and hatred running high. Hundreds of years of bad blood and contempt between human and elf have left the world vulnerable. When Freyrik's men capture Ayden he wonders why he feels immediately drawn to him. Ayden agrees to be Freyrik's slave to save his sister - but as time passes how does he fight his growing attraction to a human - and not only attraction but admiration - for Rik's great care for his people stuns Ayden. As politics, intrigue and danger dance closely together will this slave conquer his master or will the master become the slave?
So first I do not read much what I consider "high" fantasy - mostly just Tolkien and a few others. If I read fantasy it's normally paranormal or urban and comes with biting and shifting. From the first moment I started reading Counterpoint I was completely captivated by the story. For what appears to be a first effort this novel is spellbinding. The language is lyrical and perfectly fits the story and the dialogue is sharp, witty, and very in tune with creating the tension that a reader loves to really immerse into the story. Ayden, as an 800 year old elf, always has a snarky comment and Freyrik is always struggling between his desire to do what he wants and the responsiblity to do what he must. It seems neither will bend - yet there are occasional hints that speak of something underneath the surface - and the tension created keeps you completely on your toes waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.
The characters have such depth as to cement their places in your heart and mind seamlessly. The story of the world Ayden and Freyrik live in is painted vividly - a master stroking the canvas. There is a perfect blend of show and tell - neither taking precedence over the other. The story sweeps you along and propels you forward and nothing mars that feeling of taking a ride down the river and just living with these people - being part of their world.
I think my heart was racing more than Ayden and Freyrik when they first made love. It was beautiful and ethereal and sublime. Like everything else in this book each part fits together in harmony - and that is a feat for any author. I noted several places where things could have broken down but the writing stayed strong and never gave in to cliche or hackneyed plot device. My only complaint is the cliffhanger ending - now I cannot wait for Part 2!

Elminster in Myth Drannor: The Elminster Series ReviewAs one reviewer noted, there are a few problems with the portrayal of the elves, such as the Coronal snoring. However, I take issue with the other aspect's of that person's review. The "fact" that the most beautiful of all elf-waifs falling in love with Elminster isn't even true. The most beautiful elf-waif wants to USE Elminster and loves him less than the rest of his enemies. Two elves love him: The Keeper of the Tomb, and his fellow captive. Secondly, the elves are portrayed with quite a bit of realism, just not in the way that the reviewer would like. Many people read about elves and dream of being one to escape dirty, greedy, selfish humans. If you are one of those people, this is not for you.
However, if you like to read about what an ancient people with thousands of years in their lifespan might be like, it is for you. Ed portrays the elves as being much like White Wolf's vampires. If you aren't familiar with the concept, they are selfish, greedy, malevolent, manipulative beings, bent on controlling everything and being quite egomaniacal about their own nature. If you have read this book, this will immediately sound familiar to you, as this is exactly how all of the elves behave.
In short, Ed Greenwood did that most forbidden of fantasy novel things: He didn't leave the ugliness of our world behind when he wrote it, and, thus, created characters that you can hate. Characters that aren't even noble while they are evil, but are simply selfish and cruel. The elves are insulated and xenophobic, casually cruel in places, and concerned only with their own existence. In short, they are all you would expect of an arrogant race that lives thousands of years. They are realistic. None of this noble houses of morality banalness. Rather, they are believable. You will hate the Starym, and you will smile at Elminster's charisma and wisdom as he lives amongst the elves of Myth Drannor.
It was wonderfully written, a beautiful piece. It dares challenge the belief that fantasy is all about escapism, alone earning it five stars. But, in addition to all of that, it is satisfying, fun, and pleasant. Well done. Buy this book, read it, enjoy it, and read it again.

Heart Of Fire ReviewI can't tell you how refreshing I found this book. This title is as fine as any classic fantasy tale I've read in a long while. And classic fantasy romance it is--complete with a very alpha elf (of the tall-dark-handsome-fearless-dangerous variety) and a halfling heroine. I especially loved the portrayal of the cervidae--think deer shifters--and their bucolic world. But it's not so happy for Jessalyne, and within the first chapter I really felt her heartsickness and wanted a happy ending for her. It took me a hair longer to warm up to Ertemis, our buff elf, but I did--especially when his life is in jeopardy.
I don't mean this as a negative, but I cared less about the plot to save a kingdom than the worldbuilding itself--immediately accessible, consistent, believable, and written with extraordinary care. I've written enough fantasy to know that's a tough thing to do well. And I've read enough bad fantasy to know the difference.
I also want to give a hearty nod to Kristen's dialog. I'm a big fan of good dialog--and usually someone who writes such lush description like that found in this book is not as good at dialog--that all important quality to help define characters. Kristen is great at both. Oh, and there's subtle humor here in the dialog that warms one to the characters. Well done!
I would recommend this title to anyone who likes romance, fantasy (not of the darkest horror variety), unique "species" for want of a better word, and flawless, flowing writing. I cheered for the protagonists to have a well-deserved happy ending, and they did. I would also recommend this book especially to older teens--although I think fans of light classic fantasy romance of any age will adore it.
I have read every classic fantasy tale out there, I think. The Obsidian Phoenix ReviewThe good: I thought the story was fairly interesting. While the premise is somewhat trite: Orphan Girl is mysteriously found and surprise, surprise...has magical powers and has...surprise, surprise a mysterious past and eventually turns out to be surprise, surprise the key to saving all that's good in the world; the story itself is presented in an interesting manner. The story is absorbing and moves at a good pace.
The bad:
-- The protagonist is a Mary Sue. Now I've never said that about any other character in any other book...and I've read VERY many. I actually like characters who are larger than life. So when I say she's a Mary Sue, and I say it negatively, you can be sure that this character is over the top. She's not only a Mary Sue to start with; her powers grow almost with every chapter. You could make a game trying to figure out what new power the author will have the protagonist "discover" in the next chapter. By the time the book ended, I honestly didn't know why the protagonist bothered with such things as gathering friends, armies, and the like...one more chapter and she should be able to snap her fingers causing the defeat of all evil, and have everyone singing Kumbaya as well.
-- The dialogue is amateurish. Nothing flowed. The story was told in first person, which can make it tough to establish why the various supporting characters would act as they do, but the author often simply doesn't make what happens very credible. Moreover, the sentence structure in the dialogue is simply "off" in my opinion. I am not a writer myself; I am not a grammarian. But in my opinion the sentences are too short, too simplistic, too shallow in what they are trying to convey. It's as though the author established some reading comprehension level target, ran her manuscript through some kind of program, and had all of the sentences dumbed down to meet the target...which was obviously too low for my tastes.
The Nitpick: When authors use modern slang in a "sword and sorcery" type of book, it's jarring to me. This author didn't do it often, but it was noticeable the few times she did. Example: Supporting character tells main character (who has just done a strange magical thing): "You're creeping me out".
In summary: it's light reading, not horrible, good to pass time with. Like, say, on an airplane. At the time I bought it on Kindle for $2.99, it's worth the price. But if a sequel is published, I likely won't buy it.The Obsidian Phoenix OverviewCrimson and Jerrik are the sole survivors of the merciless slaughter of their people, the elves of the White Forest. Follow them as they seek vengeance and struggle with loss and life changing events. Discover Crimson's true identity and travel with her on her journey to find the Dark One who slaughtered her father and sister. The battle will be bloody, retribution will be hers.
