Bearing An Hourglass (Incarnations of Immortality, Book 2) Review"Bearing an Hourglass" is the second volume of Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, dealing with the Incarnation of Time. The series began successfully with "On a Pale Horse", but this instalment is a little more cautious in approach, and suffers somewhat from sequel syndrome.
Like several other characters from the Incarnations series, Norton is just an ordinary man who unexpectedly has the mantle of Chronos (Time) thrust upon him. He must learn to fulfil the duties of his office and deal with its peculiarities- such as living backwards in time!
The temporal quirks and paradoxes that Norton must explore create some added interest in the storyline. Overall, however, the plot lacks the verve and interest of the first book, wandering from the path in places and losing direction.
As a whole, the series is definitely worth reading, and "Bearing an Hourglass" is worth reading as a part of the series. As a stand-alone volume, however, it doesn't quite satisfy. Read it in context: the complex interlinking plots of the seven books that make up the Incarnations series are partially explained by this book, but it remains one of the weaker links in the series.
6 stars out of 10Bearing An Hourglass (Incarnations of Immortality, Book 2) OverviewWhen life seemed pointless to Norton, he accepted the position as the Incarnation of Time, even though it meant living backward from present to past. The other seemingly all-powerful incantations of Immortality--Death, Fate, War, and Nature--made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps and he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good....

Golem in the Gears (The Magic of Xanth, Book 9) ReviewI love the Xanth series and this one remains my personal favorite. Grundy is a great, unlikely hero. The resident lilliputian smart-mouth of earlier Xanth novels, he shows us here us that wise-acres have feelings too, as he goes on a great quest that may or may not bring him true love.
The thing I like about Piers Anthony's Xanth series are the things its detractors hate about it: its pure whimsy and silliness. Modern fantasy can sometimes be grim and self-important, whereas a trip to Xanth is anything-can-happen day.
I know of no books which I digest more easily than Anthony's Xanth series. They are full of silly sexuality, engaging cleverness, emotional frailty and eternal optimism.Golem in the Gears (The Magic of Xanth, Book 9) OverviewGrundy Golem got no respect. So, to prove himself, he volunteered for a quest to find the long-lost dragon, Stanley Steamer. On the way, he somehow manages to free a damsel in distress-- but not without incurring the wrath of the Sea Hag in the process. And when it comes to avenging herself on Grundy, the Sea Hag will never give up....

Letters To Jenny ReviewIf you are looking to see where Letters To Jenny ties in with the Xanth Series, don't.
The two have only one thing in common and that is Jenny Elfs portrayer...
Letters To Jenny is about a young persons life hanging in the balance after a cruel twist of fate and the hands of a drunk driver tried to end her precious life. I found most of the letters very insperational for her inner soul to heal, and hope to see what becomes of Jenny Elf in the Xanth series.
I gave this book 4 stars for the in depth information on the progress of this young persons daily tasks for life, and the heart of a wonderful writer to reach out and pull her back to the living.
It's folks like Piers Anthony and many others similar to him that help folks of all ages take a moment out of their hectic lives and dream of something more adventures.Letters To Jenny Overview"Dear Mr. Anthony,"I need your help. I'm at wit's end and am grabbing at straws, so I decided to write to you in hopes that you might take a few minutes of your time for my daughter Jennifer."Jennifer is twelve years old, and has very much enjoyed your Xanth series. Unfortunately, at the moment, she is in no condition to be able to enjoy your latest offering. On December 9th, 1988, while walking home from school she was struck by a drunk driver, and she has been in a coma ever since...."Piers Anthony responded to this mother's plea with a long letter, only the first of many. Jenny responded. Slowly at first, she began fighting back toward consciousness, and then health. Through it all, her favorite author sent her encouragement and sympathy and laughter and love. These warm, compassionate and wise letters to Jenny offer an unusual glimpse into the heart and mind of one of America's bestselling writers, and a look at reasons behind his personal relationship with his legions of fans.
