The Keepers of Elenath ReviewSoon after I started this book, I could easily tell it was Bradburn's first novel. The beginning of the plot was confusing: it revealed something awfully quickly, and I couldn't discern the direction of the storyline at all. These starting events were necessary, but could have been written better. About 100 pages in, the story took a solid form and I began to enjoy it. I was a little disappointed when there wasn't too much of the training-in-secret-practices scene that I always enjoy, but it looks as if that will come in the second book. I noticed that many terms were used a few times too many ("former princess," for example) in a short space of time. Overall, the plot and characters steadily improved as the book progressed.
What this means to a Christian: There are many people in the world who call themselves Christians. Many actually are, but some may not have a true understanding. It is the job of those who do to give them, and everyone else, the truth, and an opportunity to know Christ.The Keepers of Elenath OverviewEvil is stirring in Elenath. A rapid chain of events: a righteous king's murder, a dark queen's seizure of the throne, and the stirring of ancient peoples opens a new chapter in Elenath's history. Zack Kahler is ready to leave New York and return to his hometown, Kahlerville, Texas, where he has bought the local newspaper. He slips on the ice, and six-year-old twin waifs swoop down and help him up. In the process, they relieve him of his wallet. He goes to the orphanage where they live, to leave money for their care, and ends up adopting them.
So Zack, along with Curly and his sister, Charley, arrive in Kahlerville by rail. They settle in the local boarding house, where Zack stays busy taking over the newspaper and keeping the twins out of trouble. Zack renews his friendship with Chloe Weaver, who works at the boarding house. Back in their school days, when she often had no food, Zack brought her a sandwich for lunch every day. This she remembers, as well as her feelings for him. She has loved him ever since.
The children are endearing and they interact with Zack and Chloe, as well as others, including Mrs. Scott, schoolteacher, and Simeon, the cook. The owner of the boarding house plies Chloe with unwanted attention, and she begins to wonder if romance with him is all she can expect. But she hopes for the love of her heart.
A Christmas miracle is what they all need. The Winter of Candy Canes (Sweet Seasons Novel, A) ReviewThis is the third book in the Sweet Seasons series and it's written for the teen audience (but you don't have to be a teen to enjoy it!).
I haven't read the first two books in the series but I really felt like this could be read as a stand alone and I didn't feel weird jumping in without reading the other two first.
Candace gets hired to work at The Zone once again as a seasonal employee. This time she is given the dangerous job of being Santa's elf. What's so dangerous about that? Plenty.
But in the midst of the usual teen concerns of earning extra spending money and what to get her boyfriend (and other friends) for Christmas, Candace learns how to look beyond herself and what she sees is quite eye-opening.
Working at The Zone has broadened her friendships and in looking for just the right gifts for them she finds out what life is really like for one friend in particular. Candace has a big heart and she's more than willing to do what it takes to make a difference for her friend.
Also, Candace is the leader for a bible study group and is extremely nervous about it, especially when Joy, the holier-than-thou girl, tests her limits.
Candace will probably remember this Christmas season for a long time.
I enjoyed The Winter of Candy Canes and will gladly let my daughter read it and the rest of the series. It was a light, fun read full of action, age-appropriate romance, and spiritual growth. I like that Candace was her own person and didn't form herself around her boyfriend. She's a down-to-earth kind of girl, not a drama queen (although her best friend is one...they make a great pair!).
I also appreciated the various roles Candace played. From home life, to student, to bible study leader, to employee, to friend, to girlfriend. She handled them all very well and showed that teens don't have to have 'tudes. She didn't come across as some perfect, unattainable character. She's the kind of girl you want your daughter to be...and to be friends with.

The Mark: The Beast Rules the World (Left Behind #8) ReviewI've enjoyed these books and yet I have one REAL BIG problem with them so far. Everyone knows that when you read fiction you have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and tell yourself: "Okay, it's just a book. Everything doesn't have to make sense."
That's fine to a point.
But the LEFT BEHIND series is about events described in the Bible, and it seems to me should be held to a little bit higher standard. I don't expect perfection: the Bible is perfect, everything else is just a book. But I do expect a Christian novel to be thought out well enough by the author(s) that it's not shot full of holes by anyone with a high school education.
I have struggled with this since I read the first book in the series, but have not wanted to criticize the books when there was nothing better on the subject out there to recommend. Well, now I've found something, THE CHRIST CLONE TRILOGY by James BeauSeigneur. BeauSeigneur has done so much to insure credibility and accuracy in all the broad range of areas he covers in his series, that you'll find yourself believing it could all be true. And the way the story depicts the fulfillment of end-times prophecy will have you convinced that the author's got that nailed too.
I suppose I should say that some Christians get upset because the characters sometimes use a four letter word here and there. But, guess what, folks, non-Christians do that from time to time! (Confidentially, I've heard that even Christians have been know to utter a four-letter word.) Still the profanity is very limited. If you get disgusted with a PG-rated movie, you may not want to read these books. But even this is all just part of the accuracy. Does anyone who's read LEFT BEHIND really believe that Leon Fortunado NEVER cusses???
I could go on, but suffice it to say that if you want to read an end-times series that doesn't strain your ability to believe what you're reading, THE CHRIST CLONE is for you.The Mark: The Beast Rules the World (Left Behind #8) Overview

Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire (Sídhí Summer Camp) ReviewThis book was a surprise! I didn't really know what to expect but the story grabbed me and pulled me in right from the very first page. The writing was very smooth and flowed well throughout the entire book. Although there are a ton of books out there with vampires, fairies, werewolves, elves etc..., the author presents a unique viewpoint with lots of little twists and surprises and the story never slows down.I also enjoyed the way the author handled the relationship between the two main characters. She allows it to grow and doesn't rush it and the minor intimacy between them is appropriate and honest. The secondary characters are well developed and I'm looking forward to reading more about them in future books. Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire is definately an interesting and fun read!
I think this book would be a great read for teens and adults alike.
