Arawn's Quest: The Zen Chronicles Book One (Volume 1) ReviewArawn's Quest is a classic fantasy formula told in a very enjoyable way. Arawn is on a quest to get the gems of power and bring his people back to where they belong after being banished for a very long time. Along the way he meets the people who eventually will become his friends and traveling companions: a mysterious and powerful old man, a youth training to be a wizard, an ex pit fighter, a priest, and an elven ranger. The interactions that the characters share make the story a very good read and the world that is built here is described very well.
The end of the book was done perfectly to wrap up a part of the story, but still pave the way for one or more sequels. Star Raiders is Elysa Hendrick's 2nd futuristic romance and is loosely based in the same world as her first book Star Crash. However, in Star Raiders most of the story occurs on a space ship. I loved the feeling of being in space and this book is sure to be a favorite for futuristic fans because even though it is set in space the story feels genuine and I immediately felt the attraction between the 2 main characters.

Shy Kendar was an innocent until she discovered the man she loved was actually under cover on a personal mission to arrest her father. Shy unknowingly betrayed her father and since that time has been unable to visit him since his capture. Even though Shy was unaware of her father's activities as a smuggler she is unwilling to forgive her naiveté and misguided trust in a heartless man. On the run and on her own, Shy becomes fearless and independent. But it is the secrets she hides that could be her downfall.

It is 10 years later and Shy is now a smuggler herself. She has her own moral code that includes helping the underprivileged. Although she does break the law she is careful to stay under the law's radar. Most of her smuggling includes helping poor planets or saving slaves from being sold to unscrupulous buyers. Now her old lover has returned and has the audacity to ask for her help after ruining her life. His bargaining chip, pardons for her and the rest of her crew.

Grayson Dane has changed since he first met Shy and his views are no longer black and white. He realizes now that Shy did not have any involvement in her father's activates and as a result has become close to her father. Through his job at Earth League's Anti-smuggling/Piracy he has tried to use his resources to shield Shy' s activities from authorities. But now there is a bounty on her head and she is accused of terrible deeds he knows she couldn't be responsible for. Torn between his lost love and duty, Grayson decides he must find a way to prove her innocence. But first he must convince Shy to help him find the real culprit.
The first thing I loved about this book was how the author set most of the story on a spaceship. I really felt the characters were in space; their travels and battles were amazing to read. I also enjoyed how the author created new species of crewmates on Shy's ship and I can't wait for them to have their own stories?! (I would particularly like to discover more about Bear and Silky's past.) But best of all I liked how the 2 main characters had a history together, it definitely notched up the tension between them. It made them feel more interesting and intriguing to read. I also enjoyed some cool plot twists that will definitely surprise readers.

However, readers who have read her first book will soon discover that this story does not have the angst of her first book. And what I found surprising about the Star Raiders story is how quickly the 2 main characters got `together' after the initial animosity on Shy's part. Comparing this book to her prior futuristic novel I feel that this romance is more mainstream and I think any futuristic fan will find it a guaranteed exciting read.

The Obsidian Phoenix ReviewThe good: I thought the story was fairly interesting. While the premise is somewhat trite: Orphan Girl is mysteriously found and surprise, surprise...has magical powers and has...surprise, surprise a mysterious past and eventually turns out to be surprise, surprise the key to saving all that's good in the world; the story itself is presented in an interesting manner. The story is absorbing and moves at a good pace.
The bad:
-- The protagonist is a Mary Sue. Now I've never said that about any other character in any other book...and I've read VERY many. I actually like characters who are larger than life. So when I say she's a Mary Sue, and I say it negatively, you can be sure that this character is over the top. She's not only a Mary Sue to start with; her powers grow almost with every chapter. You could make a game trying to figure out what new power the author will have the protagonist "discover" in the next chapter. By the time the book ended, I honestly didn't know why the protagonist bothered with such things as gathering friends, armies, and the like...one more chapter and she should be able to snap her fingers causing the defeat of all evil, and have everyone singing Kumbaya as well.
-- The dialogue is amateurish. Nothing flowed. The story was told in first person, which can make it tough to establish why the various supporting characters would act as they do, but the author often simply doesn't make what happens very credible. Moreover, the sentence structure in the dialogue is simply "off" in my opinion. I am not a writer myself; I am not a grammarian. But in my opinion the sentences are too short, too simplistic, too shallow in what they are trying to convey. It's as though the author established some reading comprehension level target, ran her manuscript through some kind of program, and had all of the sentences dumbed down to meet the target...which was obviously too low for my tastes.
The Nitpick: When authors use modern slang in a "sword and sorcery" type of book, it's jarring to me. This author didn't do it often, but it was noticeable the few times she did. Example: Supporting character tells main character (who has just done a strange magical thing): "You're creeping me out".
In summary: it's light reading, not horrible, good to pass time with. Like, say, on an airplane. At the time I bought it on Kindle for $2.99, it's worth the price. But if a sequel is published, I likely won't buy it.The Obsidian Phoenix OverviewCrimson and Jerrik are the sole survivors of the merciless slaughter of their people, the elves of the White Forest. Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire (Sídhí Summer Camp) ReviewThis book was a surprise! I didn't really know what to expect but the story grabbed me and pulled me in right from the very first page. The writing was very smooth and flowed well throughout the entire book. Although there are a ton of books out there with vampires, fairies, werewolves, elves etc..., the author presents a unique viewpoint with lots of little twists and surprises and the story never slows down.I also enjoyed the way the author handled the relationship between the two main characters. She allows it to grow and doesn't rush it and the minor intimacy between them is appropriate and honest. The secondary characters are well developed and I'm looking forward to reading more about them in future books. Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire is definately an interesting and fun read!
I think this book would be a great read for teens and adults alike.
