Child of a Dead God: A Novel of the Noble Dead ReviewThis is supposedly the last book in the Noble Dead Series. The events in the book take place after Magiere and Leesil rescue Leesil's mother from her imprisonment in the Elven Territories. Disturbed by dreams guiding her to a mysterious castle, Magiere leads Leesil, Wynn, Chap, and their Elven protectors south. Her dreams have told her little else. On their trail is Magiere's half-brother, Welstiel, a vampire desperate to be freed from his bloodlust. For Welstiel, Magiere is the one who can guide him to this artifact.
The action was good and the description of the events was excellent. The ending was open for another adventure of Magiere and Leesil.
If you haven't read the other five books in the series, you will be confused about what is going on since the authors do not go into any real details of what happened in the previous five books. My biggest complaint about this book was that it seemed like every time you turned around there was a reminder that Welstiel was Magiere's half-brother.
Child of a Dead God: A Novel of the Noble Dead OverviewFor years, Magiere and Leesil have sought a long-forgotten artifact, even though its purpose has been shrouded in mystery. All Magiere knows is that she must keep the orb from falling into the hands of a murdering Noble Dead, her half-brother Welstiel. And now, dreams of a castle locked in ice lead her south, on a journey that has become nothing less than an obsession. Accompanying Magiere and Leesil are the sage Wynn, their canine protector Chap, and two elven assassins-turned-guardians who must fight their distrust of this sister of the dead. For forces more powerful than they are rallying around Magiere, arming her for the conflict to come. Because finding the orb may be just the beginning of the challenges that await her...

For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5) ReviewIn many ways, Rachel Morgan's problems come full circle in this fifth installment of the Hallows series. With enemies drawing closer than they ever have before, her palette of choices is fast becoming slim to none. In one power play after the next, Rachel's about to fall behind enemy lines, instead of the one step ahead we've been seeing.
It's back to Cincinnati after her desperate attempt to save her pixie partner's son and her ex-boyfriend, Nick. Rachel harbors a rather nasty curse trapped in a bone prison, the focus, which threatens to twist the realities of Weres and vampires alike, both of whom squabble over it like children. With Trent vying for it, someone killing for it and our favorite demon Al lusting after it, Rachel once again has to find a way to undo another problem forced upon her. As the delicate balance between her and Ivy begins to come to a roiling boil, it's all the earth witch can do to stay this side of good, acceptable magic. With her special blood and desire to help others though, it's near impossible for her to deflect the trouble that comes looking for her with a vengeance. Unable to unload the focus on just anyone, she'll have to decide who's the best choice...and none of them are looking particularly stellar.
The first of Harrison's series to be offered in hardback, it's a worthy installment for it, tipping the scales even further towards excellent. For a Few Demons More wraps up some of the problems that Rachel has been having over the course of the other books while of course unraveling others even further. Trent comes back into play and it's a totally different side of him than readers have read before. Ceri, the powerful ex-demon familiar, shows Rachel just how much she respects her and Rachel's pack mate David takes on a major role. The demon Newt is back and we get some interesting information and insights into that character too, though whether they help or hinder the outlook on Newt is the reader's choice. Ivy's dilemma with Piscary is excruciatingly dealt with and it was a struggle at certain points to get past the powerful emotions Harrison has written surrounding Ivy and Rachel. As always, Harrison manages to insert a shocking twist, one I never saw coming, involving Rachel and another of her closest friends. For a Few Demons More is inundated with its fair share of pain, angst and utter despair and readers most certainly may feel closer to Rachel than ever before because of it. It's not without it's glimmer of hope though and some very interesting new characters are introduced that I hope will continue to make appearances in the next book, most notably a mysterious organization of demon practitioners and Dr. Ford Miller, a psychiatrist for the FIB (Federal Inderlander Bureau, the human division to deal with Inderlanders). In the end, as much as Rachel has had to deal with, she's never appeared stronger to me. As always, the once-a-year release of Harrison's Hallows series just can't come fast enough and I only hope that there will be many, many more to come. For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5) Overview

The Doom Guardian: Chronicles of Cambrea ReviewOn the Kindle, it's hard to judge a book by its cover. Sometimes, though, when an author is particularly attentive to detail, you can judge a book by its epigraph. Julie Ann Dawson is one of those authors, and her novel The Doom Guardian is a book packed with such detail that a re-read may be in order. But first things first-turn to the first page after the copyright and you'll find this:
This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons living, dead, or undead is coincidental, and, truthfully, quite odd.
Now I don't mention this because it's central to the plot-if you remember that blurb I posted a really long time ago promising to get this review up a really long time ago (right...sorry about that), you'll know that this first book in the Chronicles of Cambrea series is populated by a whole host of humans, vampires, human-vampire hybrids called dhampirs, dwarves, elves, necromancers, spell-casters, capricious deities and the calculating priests who serve them. What the little disclaimer does do is hint at the author's sense of humor and exception attention to detail-two things that can never hurt in speculative fiction.
After that eerie little message to the reader, Dawson jumps right into the story: describing in gory detail a hideous birth scene in which our heroine Nadia dreams of a woman "tied down to the massive stone altar, screaming the scream of a woman about to give birth to some hell spawn from the deepest pits of the lower planes." On first read, I thought that was some sort of really elaborate simile, but I guess I didn't read the blurb closely enough myself, because our author means it literally.
Dawson doesn't mess around: her description is rich and, at times, gruesomely vivid, but with a plotline as twisted (and I mean that in every way) as The Doom Guardian`s, there's no room for extended metaphors. Step aside, English majors-we have a real storyteller in town.
What particularly interested me about the novel is its aspects of fantastical polytheism-Dawson does an excellent job drawing a society of many religions, where the gods actually answer your prayers (not often in the way you'd like-just ask the dwarf trapped in a stalagmite cage), and priests mediate between necromancers and cults of assassins. When it comes to our heroine Nadia, I get a sort of Constantine and The Lies of Locke Lamora (see Scott Lynch) vibe-some exorcisms, plus some corpses, plus some shadowy cults. And that's just fine with me.
Final Verdict:
D&D fans attention! Be not thrown off by the entrance of "chaos diamonds" into the story. In The Doom Guardian, Dawson fills a fully engaging society with an interesting cast of all the fantasy creatures of myth, legend, and nightmare. When it comes to pinning this story down to a genre, science fiction certainly isn't it (if you want your "magic" founded in quantum mechanics, look elsewhere). The Doom Guardian is closer to fantasy than anything else, with a little horror tucked in for good measure.
Reading Time: One month, for a college student between research conferences.
Availability: $4.99 in the Kindle store is, in my book (err, blog, I guess) still a little steep. I'd suggest sending yourself a sample and seeing how you like the first 500 locations before handing over your crisp green Lincolns. The Doom Guardian: Chronicles of Cambrea OverviewFor centuries, the Spirit Wall has protected the world from the terrible powers of the undead god Vagruth. But now the Spirit Wall has begun to crumble, and with it the only thing preventing the world from becoming overrun by undead hordes. Meanwhile, the demonic Felsworn seek to take advantage of the chaos and enact their own plans. In a world fractured by politics, greed, and apathy, fate will unite three unlikely heroes to save the Spirit Wall from destruction.Nadia Gareth knows all too well the evils that lurk in the hearts of the Vagruth's minions, the Necromancers. Nadia walks the land as a dhampir, a cursed thing trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead as a result of the Necromancers' vile experiments. Yet her curse also gives her the strength she needs to combat the forces that seek to turn everything around her into an undead waste. But this is one fight that may be too much for her to handle alone. Darseidon Stonecleaver survived the War of Reckoning, and now journeys to the Mouth of Chaos to retrieve the Chaos Diamond, the one thing powerful enough to save the Spirit Wall from destruction. As he enters his Twilight, the aging dwarf knows it isn't a matter of if he will die, but when. He can only hope to complete his last mission before it is too late. Nigel Stormthorn just wants to escape town with his stolen gems, but finds himself caught up in events that may determine the fate of the world. As his survival instincts wage war against his meddlesome empathy, he discovers that perhaps his gems are of less value than the secret that resides within him.

Attack of the Vampire Snowmen ReviewThe great thing about zombie authors is their dedication to the genre...just when I think they have reached the limits of the imagination, I stumble upon something that expands zombie fiction into other genres - engulfs them, really. NOM NOM NOM! While other genres add glitter to their monsters, one author has brought the zombie culture to the North Pole...and vampire snowmen -- a little something from various sub-genres of horror, mixed with suspense, without giving the little ones nightmares.
When I realized that I would be reading a story about vampire snowmen and zombie elves, I didn't know whether to laugh or beat myself with my laptop. After carefully noting in the intro that the author LOVES Christmas and the holiday season, I decided to approach this book with the same seriousness I would give to any fantasy tale. Keep in mind, this is young adult fiction, with the goal of appealing to both children and adults...so, not quite as dark as you might expect, and age appropriate for grade school & up. My 5yr old loved it & wants "the guy who made Nightmare Before Christmas (Tim Burton) to make the book into a movie."
There are Light Elves and Dark Elves; the Light Elves make the toys, and are enjoying a well-deserved night off at an enchanted amusement park. Laidenn realizes that they are about to be attacked by vampire snowman. This is where the author's talent for detail starts to show, when Laidenn prepares to fight with bags of salt. As Laidenn tries to make the other elves aware of the impending danger, we learn more about how the light and dark magic work at the North Pole. We also discover that there are actually two different breeds of vampires as well.
I laughed at the description of the horrible things that took place in Santa's workshop, for instance, Barbie heads with Ken bodies! (Not necessarily scary, but kids will understand how troublesome this can be.) Santa defends his workshop with the stealth and swiftness that would make Van Helsing proud. Don't let the fat, jolly appearance fool you - this Santa has the moves of a warrior. He also has command of zombie elves! This is the Santa I want at my house.
I appreciate that Alano doesn't slack off just because he's writing for a younger audience; too often, I read YA fiction that seems like the authors don't think they have to include as much detail. This is a great story for the whole family, especially if you're already fans of the classic monsters: vampires, zombies etc. I know Christmas will never be the same at our house again.
Happily, this is not the only YA tale from this author: check out Hand Puppet Horror.Attack of the Vampire Snowmen OverviewWith only a few days before the big night, Santa Claus is kidnapped by an army of vampire snowmen; it's up to Laidenn, Claus' only dark elf-in-training, to enlist the help of the living dead elves to defeat the snowmen and bring Claus back.

Mythe Vampire ReviewShiloh Walker's works can be terrific or a tragedy. The inconsistancey of her writing can make buying her books a bit of a gamble at times. Mythe Vampire is a great story and a safe bet for Walker fans. This fantasy tale brings a Vampire into the world of elves with interesting results.
Elf Princess Caet goes from bratty child to a mature woman during the course of this story. Watching her mature and work her way through her hurts is a pleasure. The vampire Ronal takes a brief dramatic turn worthy of a Shakespearian Tragedy, however, and that seems highly out of character. It's an odd scene that makes little sense.
I felt Ms. Walker skimped a bit on the world building. Perhaps because this was the second in the series she didn't feel the need to fill in the details, but this makes it a bit confusing if one hasn't read the previous book. I would have liked to see it stand on it's own a bit better. I understand books from EC tend to be shorter because they are primarily e-books, but Shiloh Walker is talented enough to fit in the needed details in limited space if she chooses to do so.
Overall Myth is a good read, and while I won't say its a "must read," it would definately be an enjoyable one for anyone who picks it up.Mythe Vampire OverviewMythe - Vampire By Shiloh WalkerBook 2 in the Mythe seriesRonal de Amshe knew he would not receive a warm welcome in the realm of the elves, and he got exactly what he had expected. Especially from the daughter of the Elf King.Caetria disliked him immensely, or so she told herself. But Caet had a lot to learn. About vampires, and becoming the woman she was meant to be. To her horror, the king ordered her to be Ronal's guide and companion while he remained within their realm. He couldn't possibly mean...At first sight of the princess, the dark, seductive vampire immediately envisioned the passion they could share...if she didn't loathe him so thoroughly. But it didn't take long for the elvish princess to warm to the vampire who watched her with intense eyes. Nor did it take very long to fall in love with him...but Fate stands ready to tear them apart.Ronal is a Gatekeeper in this land of Mythe and his destiny is written. Caetria will be Queen of the Elves one day and must remain with her people. Sacrifice will be expected from all the inhabitants of Mythe. War looms on the horizon...To overcome the obstacles they face and hold on to the happiness they have found will require a love beyond measure.

Dhampir (Noble Dead) ReviewI've read one previous novel by Barb Hendee, Blood Memories, and was impressed enough by the experience that I decided to read Dhampir. Let's begin by saying that I am not regretting that decision.
This is the first novel of a series, the next of which will not be available until January 2004. She is writing with her husband this time, J.C. Hendee, but the integration of their writing styles is seamless. If you liked the writing style of Blood Memories, you won't even notice that J.C. Hendee has come aboard. I count this as a good thing, because I liked Blood Memories quite a lot.
The story revolves around Magiere and her partner, Leesil (a half-elf), who are an awsome vampire slaying duo. Magirere is more special than she realizes; let's just say that she has some interesting ancestors. When the two decide to retire, their peaceful plans are interrupted by a trio of undead who know more about Magiere's birthright than she does herself.
This novel is set more in Tolkien's universe than in Laurell K. Hamilton's, Tanya Huff's, or P.N. Elrod's, but it should still satisfy fans of those authors. Still, it is one of the best introductory novels I've read in a long time. I hope that the rest of the series lives up to the promise.Dhampir (Noble Dead) OverviewThe launch of a major new vampire series-set in a classic fantasy universe... A con-artist who poses as a vampire slayer learns that she is, in fact, a true vampire slayer-a dhampir-whose actions have attracted the unwanted attention of a trio of powerful vampires seeking her blood.

Thief of Lives (Noble Dead) ReviewWhen I read Dhampir, I wasn't sure if it was intended for an extended run or not, but here is the next volume of what now appears to be at least a trilogy. This is good news, as the Hendee's have managed to create two strong characters and put together a plot that still maintains it's mystery and draw at the end of two volumes. Magiere is a dhampir, daughter of a vampire and a human. At the end of the previous volume (in which a vampire killing scam suddenly turns out to be serious) she discovers that dhampirs have significant and deadly powers of their own. Her companion is half-elven Leesil who also hides many mysteries. Trained as an assassin, Leesil was happily pursuing a life of crime until he met Magiere. Just for a moment, at the beginning of Thief of Lives, the couple has settled into the routine of running an inn.
Nothing lasts, of course, and in short order Magiere, Leesil, and Chap the wonder dog have been maneuvered into heading for the capital city of Bela to hunt the vampire responsible for killing the daughter of a prominent councilman. They arrive to discover that they are not particularly welcome - even less so when they announce that the killer may be one of the privileged classes. And instead of one vampire there are two, or maybe three, or ... Add a dog with unexpected skills, another elven killer, some mages, and a return visit by Welstiel Massing (who has hidden agendas of his own) and you have a good picture of what life is like for Leesil and Magiere.
Not counting their own relationship, which has become clouded by their discovery that being a dhampir is more than having a funny ethnic designation. The events of the previous volume (which include Leesil feeding Magiere his own blood to save her life) have triggered a series of psychological and physical changes in the young woman. Not feeling in control of herself, Magiere has taken to avoiding Leesil out of fear that she might hurt him. This has put their normally close alliance is under a strain and has left both of them prone to emotional mistakes.
The Hendee's manage this complex set of factors like long time writers, and the result is an active, flowing plot with a wealth of character and setting detail. While revealing a lot, they always manage to hold enough back so that there is always something new on the horizon. While this is a Gothic world, with Gothic vampires, there is a fresh newness to the plot that defies the stereotypes it works with. The book stands fairly well on its own, generally explaining what it inherits from the previous volume, but you are best of starting from the beginning - if for no other reason than the first book being equally enjoyable.Thief of Lives (Noble Dead) OverviewOn the heels of Dhampir, Barb and J. C. Hendee's acclaimed fantasy debut, comes a new novel featuring Magiere and Leesil, slayers of the undead... Magiere the dhampir and Leesil, her half-elf partner, are called out of their self-imposed retirement when vampires besiege the town of Bela-and are discovered to be in a league with the town's most prominent elders...

Even Vampires Get the Blues (The Dark Ones, Book 4) ReviewI'm a little dissapointed & I'll tell you why. I've come to expect great things from Katie Mac- no let me rephrase- I've come to expect fantasticly huge, gigantic surprises and fun from Katie Mac. She is one of my all time favorite authors AND one of the authors that I consider paves the way for eveyone else to follow in the paranormal romance genre. Even in her romance where there is no paranormal she kicks major butt and I fall in love with her leading characters despite myself. I've always been pleasurably surprised...until now.
Don't get me wrong this story was alright, I guess. But for a few bright exeptions (yes the Butterfly World scene cheif among them) this book just didn't dazzle me with Katie Mac's usual spark of brilliance. Deep sigh. Let's hope the next Aishling Gray in Mac's series holds up.
If your still interested in the book...Paen Scott, a Scottish Lord ( who doesn't speak like a scottsman but rather an Englishman, big difference), has a lesser demon visit to tell him dear old dad, who has trod off to the forests of Bolivia, forgot to mention something. He promised to give a demon lord a statue of the monkey god or forfeit Paen's mothers soul. Obviousley Paen is distressed, especially when he finds out he only has 5 days now to turn over the statue & by the way it's nowhere to be found.
Paen turns to a half sun elf/diviner named Sam, who has just opened her detective business to hunt missing objects down. She & her lingerie model/fairy cousin are on the case. However they kind of seem to be miserably bad detectives and they also end up doing nearly every sterotypical thing they shouldn't due. Noelle from early Dark One books shows up to help interrogate a 6 armed poltergeist named Rueben & some kilt clad ghosts wander around a bit.
I had a problem with liking the main charachter, Paen, other than his accent or lack there of. He goes out in noon day sun. Hmmm, ok, let me see...oh, yeah, HE'S a DARK ONE!!! AKA vampire. Sure Christian in Mac's other books in the series could tolerate being covered up & out in the last rays of the day, but not at noon! And all the action takes place over 5 days but 2 of those are skipped through since the couple are in different cities! I just don't feel happy about this one.It lacks the best aspects of the series.Even Vampires Get the Blues (The Dark Ones, Book 4) OverviewPaen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers, too, if Paen can't repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God-in five days. When he hires half-elf private investigator Samantha Cosse to help him, he sets her elf senses tingling. Which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Especially since Sam is convinced that she is Paen's Beloved-the woman who can give him back his soul, whether he wants it or not...

Skin Thief (Cassandra Farbanks Series.) ReviewSkin Thief
by
Sonnet O'Dell
I was not familiar with Auhor Sonnet O'Dell's work when a request was made for me to read and give a review of Skin Thief. From chapter one, the story captured and kept my attention. When that happens, I know I am going to understand and enjoy the rest of the book. I found that it had already revealed a nice surprise in the very first few chapters, and I looked forward to what followed.
Cassandra Fairbanks works as a Paranormal Investigator. The case that showed itself in the first few chapters, she was investigating how two people could switch bodies. One was a guard and the other a prisoner. While trying to find out how this was possible, she discovers that an amulet is what is responsible for what seemed impossible. She must find this amulet before more trouble is created.
Cassandra definitely has a life that is by no means boring. When she is not investigating the paranormal, she is getting the personal attention of a half-elf man named Magnus and a vampire named Arum. I was very excited when I found out a vampire was in the midst of things! And a bit surprised when the other character was a human who was half elf. A nice twist I have not come across before in a story.
I totally enjoyed this book and I hear this is the beginning of a series of adventures for Cassandra Fairbanks, and I intend on reading each and every one of them! Sonnet has put her own twist on this paranormal series that sets it aside as different from most of them that are out there. I found it to be well written and she makes sure she keeps the reader's attention with every turn of the page. I put it way up there with other paranormal reads I have reviewed over time.
I give Skin Thief five stars *****

Dragon's Reach: The Calling (Dragon's Reach Book Three) ReviewThis book in the Dragon's Reach short-novel series sets up more of the types of creatures which live in the universe where it takes place. We meet vampires and learn about the relationship between them and elves a bit more, and that even the monsters can have feelings. I liked it because the kids are more important than the adults in solving the problems which arise. The series is cool too because it fluctuates between werewolf politics and elf politics and how an ordinary human family can have more power than even creatures of magic!Dragon's Reach: The Calling (Dragon's Reach Book Three) OverviewIn Dragon's Reach: The Calling (Book Three), it was a special night at the Steward cottage. Serina had invited a few close friends over to witness the blooming of a rare and magical plant. Several werewolves, including her son Johnny's best friend Ren were there as well as Thessa the witch and the annoyingly arrogant Mathon, the Lord of the high elves in Dragon's Reach. When the flowers blossomed, they gave off a magical light and music, but they also called to the blood of the creature whose essence had been planted with the flowers. Serina expected something safe and familiar, but what the woman didn't expect were the frightening creatures which the flowers did call.On her way to the gathering, thirteen-year-old Millie, Ren's cousin, paused for her packmate Slash to catch up, but when he reached the girl's location, all that was left was her torch on the ground. Realizing that she'd been kidnapped, Slash raced to the cottage and told his Fenris, Kemick, what had happened. With the girl's abduction, they learned that a child-killer had already claimed three victims during the week before, and it seemed obvious that Millie would be the fourth. They had to find the girl before it was too late, but there were only so many hours of night left. If the sun rose, all chances of rescuing the werewolf would be gone.

Nocturne, Son of the Night ReviewI highly recommend this story for those who love fantasy and adventure for the escapism it provides.
A.J. Cooper presents the world of Varda with an ease of entry that is at once familiar and cozy, yet interesting enough to keep you there, wondering where he will take you next.

Nocturne himself is interesting as a main character and probably, because I'm not the most familiar with this particular genre of fantasy, the adventures of Nocturne reminds me a bit of Conan the Barbarian, in
that he is a wandering character, traveling, fighting, escaping, and having adventures. The ending was well done, leaving you satisfied at where the journey of Nocturne leaves us, yet wanting more of the world.

And even though the main character is Nocturne, I feel the world of Varda is the real character in the story. From what I've gathered from A.J Cooper's author page, this seems to be the case and I'm looking forward to more stories to come out of Varda in the future.
All in all, this was a great little gem for $0.99 and I recommend it if you like fantasy/adventure with a wandering, kick-ass vampire elf thrown in.Nocturne, Son of the Night Overview"Seeing the great darkness within the Elvenking's heart, the High God cursed his descendants with a thirst for blood..."Nocturne, one of those descendants, doesn't fit in with the other Druen. He has a heart for humans, something not well respected in his society. One winter night this "weakness" gets the best of him when he kills his neighbor to save a human slave. Forced to leave his life behind, he begins a world-spanning journey in pursuit of his true home. His search will take him from the frozen wilderness to the great Elven cities and beyond, perhaps even into the realms of humanity."The main character, Nocturne, is engaging and well-drawn... Cooper has created an intriguing and vivid fantasy world with a lot of plausible detail... [This book] is one of those Candide-type stories about the wanderer in search of himself and is quite compelling." - Inanna Arthen, author of MORTAL TOUCH

Dragon's Reach: The Friendship (Dragon's Reach Book One) ReviewThe Dragon's Reach novels are all shorter novels and focus on friendship between two boys, one a human and one a werewolf. They show how being bullied doesn't make you weak or that you can't do anything. And the characters are likeable except of course, for the bad guys. It's cheap and great for teenagers or anyone who wants a fun and easy summer read. Plus its a series and the apparently the plots get more involved over time, so that you get eased into the world of Dragon's Reach, which works for me!Dragon's Reach: The Friendship (Dragon's Reach Book One) OverviewIn Dragon's Reach: The Friendship (Dragon's Reach BOOK ONE), a young widow, Serina, moves to the deep woods a year after her husband's death. She and her twelve-year-old son, Johnny, reclaim the cottage of her husband's youth, unaware that the cottage is in the territory of the local werewolf pack.Serina is befriended by the local independent witch, Thessa, and Johnny becomes best-friends with Ren, the submissive son of the werewolf leader. All of which leaves them in the middle of local pack politics. To further complicate their social position, Kemick, the werewolf leader competes for her affection against Mathon, the High Lord of the elves--one with gentleness, one with arrogance, and all of their fates are tangled by the multi-threaded Friendship Oaths sworn to her dead husband during his childhood.

Beloved LifeMate: Song of the Sídhí #1 ReviewJodie B Cooper's book Beloved LifeMate: Song of the Sidhi #1 is a fantastic start for a new series! I loved the fantastical world Cooper created around Miranda and Colin. Her concept of having a LifeMate is unique and refreshing. I thought the change of emotions between Miranda and Colin was an extremely interesting idea. Although I do wish Cooper would've made Colin & Miranda's feelings for one another a little more subtle, I still found it engaging. I look forward to reading the following books in the series. I also thought it was great that the author included a glossary of terms for the world she created. It reminded me of Karen Marie Moning.Beloved LifeMate: Song of the Sídhí #1 OverviewSong of the Sídhí Series #117,000 wordsParanormal Romance~ ~ ~ ~What happens when a powerful elvish monarch opens a doorway from Sídhí to Earth? He stumbles upon a beautiful halfling who may spell doom for his entire world. Trellick Valley covered the same area of land as Tulsa, but in my home valley the river area was surrounded wilderness, not a big city. I wondered if the river looked as different as it smelled. On impulse, I turned off the paved path, heading into the forest of trees that skirted the river. The wooded area between the walkway and the river wasn't very wide, but had a thick undergrowth of spindly trees and bushes.A dozen feet into the wooded area I found a small clearing, not very big and not at all interesting. I crossed it with quick steps, eager to see the river before Fritz came looking for me. I was nearly at the far edge when the sudden presence of a gateway stopped me cold. The surge of power tingled across my skin, forcing chill bumps to bloom across my skin. Gateways existed all across the world, but since they didn't normally pop into existence, at the drop of a hat, the presence of one spelled trouble.I shuddered and fear skittered down my back. A random gateway was not normal; a single wild gateway might open every thousand years, but that was it. Whatever was going on, it must be really bad.Yeah, I was a true pessimist; it made me feel better when the bottom dropped out.I held my breath and turned toward the source of the surging power. Sure enough, less than ten feet away from me, a gateway stood open. A mundane human would never see it, but to my Sídhí eyes it glowed a soft yellowish-white. I glanced past the edges and into an expensively decorated room, realizing it definitely wasn't a wild gateway. I really wish it had been.Fear froze me.

Dragon Lust (Dragonfire Series) ReviewLoved this new series. The characters are great and the story line engaging. Already purchased the second book in the series and can't wait to read! Awesome.Dragon Lust (Dragonfire Series) OverviewMy name is Lexi Helyanwe and I am a Dragon. Well actually I am part Dragon, part Elf, with twist of Lust Demon thrown in. I too was bioengineered by my parents, whose goal is to save the Dragon race and maybe the Elves, too. Of course if that secret gets out it's likely I'll end up sliced and diced on a stainless steel table in some underground lab. My Father somehow managed to break the DNA code and engineer ten male Dragons and little ol' me. Not great odds when your goal is to save an entire race, but someone had killed his partners and trashed his lab. He'd had no choice but to go into hiding, which ultimately prevented any more experimentation. Lucky for me no one knew that Mom had been inseminated and I was already on a path that would lead me to this room some twenty five years later. Up until recently I'd managed to live a quiet life in which I was a mild mannered manual writer during the day. However, my nights were a different matter entirely. During the wee hours of the night I liked to skip through the highways and byways of the seedy part of town, working to ensure decent folk were safe from the local non-human underbelly inhabiting San Francisco. This just happened to be one of the reasons why at this exact moment I was sitting in the conference room surrounded by the heads of the most prominent non-human crime organizations. Of course none of them know I'm the one they're looking for, except of course Jace and Gareth. But then , it was their conference room and their meeting.

Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire (Sídhí Summer Camp) ReviewThis book was a surprise! I didn't really know what to expect but the story grabbed me and pulled me in right from the very first page. The writing was very smooth and flowed well throughout the entire book. Although there are a ton of books out there with vampires, fairies, werewolves, elves etc..., the author presents a unique viewpoint with lots of little twists and surprises and the story never slows down.I also enjoyed the way the author handled the relationship between the two main characters. She allows it to grow and doesn't rush it and the minor intimacy between them is appropriate and honest. The secondary characters are well developed and I'm looking forward to reading more about them in future books. Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire is definately an interesting and fun read!
I think this book would be a great read for teens and adults alike. I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series!Forbidden Temptation of a Vampire (Sídhí Summer Camp) OverviewDragon Council Proclamation:In order to remain undetected by mundane humans on Earth, The Dragon High Council has decided peace between the Sídhí races is critical. Therefore, all Sídhí Valleys will participate in a summer camp hosted by Dragon Valley. It is believed the unique blending of races within the summer camp will achieve the first step toward peace. Participants shall include the eldest two teenage children (or direct descendants) of each council member.Participation in the Peace Camp is not optional. If any Sídhí Valley refuses to participate, all known gateways within that valley will be shut down immediately.A copy of this proclamation has been dispatched to the governmental bodies of all known valleys. ~ ~ ~ Seventeen-year-old, Katie McQuillen is a halfling (vampire/elf mix) in a world where halflings are not acceptable members of polite society. Unfortunately, her grandpa is chairman of the Vampire High Council and she is forced into attending a summer camp meant to create peace between the Sídhí races. She is in the middle of Sídhí puberty - going from scrawny to beach bunny in less than three weeks - when she and her twin brother arrive at camp.Camp starts off with a bang when vampire hottie, Jared Andrews, becomes one of her new seven cabinmates, especially when he can't keep his eyes off her. But is he interested in her, her family's money, or her blood? She might actually enjoy summer camp, if she can stop finding dead bodies and if people stop trying to kill her. ~ ~ ~ 76,000 word count.~ ~ ~ Excerpt“I saw you snitching that last slice of coconut cream pie mom made. You should be ashamed of yourself for not sharing with your beloved brother."She grinned as her twin walked toward her. He was so busy teasing her he didn't notice the slowly rotating ceiling fan. He had a bad case of tunnel vision, or maybe she should say, once he got something stuck in his thick head, he chewed it to death, it rattled around in his hard head and would not go away. For all his teasing, she should let him walk into the fan, but his head would break her ceiling fan.“Mitch," she said, pointing up at the fan in warning. He ignored her, chattering on about how much she was eating during puberty. He was almost there. “Mitch!" She waved her hand to stop him, waiting for the inevitable ker-chunk.“Aargh!" He bellowed and his eyes bugged out. Ducking at the last minute, he neatly avoided the thin wooden blade of the fan. Looking up, he glared at the fan.Katie's laughter filled the room. Talk about priceless. Though, she was glad his cement-hard head hadn't broken her ceiling fan. “Very funny, Katie. Ha. Ha," he grumbled, turning his good-humored glare on her; his lips twitched, trying not to laugh with her.“I tried to stop you."“Just wait until you start your growth spurt. Next week you'll be whining and complaining that nothing fits anymore."“I think it might be sooner than next week. I'd guess a couple of days max." Her clothes were loose, but they irritated her skin. Every time she moved, she felt the brush of her shorts and soft cotton halter-top slide against her sensitive skin. Her skin had started tingling yesterday afternoon. She sighed in resignation, being tender was normal a few days before she started the final growth spurt. “Honestly," Katie said. “I can't wait. To think, I'll actually have'" “Laa! Laa! Laa! Laa!" He loudly bellowed with a sick look on his face and fingers stuck in his ears.“I was just going to say hips," she said, planting her hands on her hips. She grinned at his pained expression. He gave a long-suffering sigh and removed his fingers. She couldn't resist the urge to tease him. “Oh, and I'll finally have boobs." Her giggles turned to laughter as his mortified expression turned beet red. He tried to say something, but only a gurgle came out, while the tips of his pointed ears turned rosy red.Thank you for considering Forbidden Temptation!

The Elf of Luxembourg ReviewIt's not all fun fairs and ice-cream in Luxembourg. Here there is a certain standard to maintain, and vacationing with Elves and Vampires is just too old school. But can Alex convince her younger sister, Jackie, of that? Nope, of course not. Because beneath the ancient city of Luxembourg there lies a secret. The Vampires believe it is protected by The Elf. However The Elf has different ideas... Can Alex and Jackie fulfill the prophecy and end the war between The Elf and the Vampires before it is too late?
My Review:
This story was fun- a true young adult adventure full of intriguing, fun characters. This is the first time I've been introduced to Alex & Jackie and it was an enjoyable ride. I had fun taking an adventure through Luxembourg with the girls and meeting the townies. The characters were cunning and full of witty repertoire. This book goes back and forth between the ancient, tragic journey of Cuchaquicha and the current day happenings of both Alex & Jackie.

Make sure you're on your toes and paying attention- it is a bit confusing to read. This is both good and bad- I felt as if someone was personally speaking to me and telling me a story rather than something more formal- I love that. However, I truly wished there was more story on the Alex & Jackie adventure and less Cuchaquicha. Cucha made the story seem a little dry at times although his story was intriguing and incredibly sad. I found myself skimming through Cucha's parts quickly to get to Alex & Jackie. I was dying to find out what those two would get into next... Who wouldn't, though? Ancient elves, vampires, prophecy and two pretty blonds? Sounds good to me!

Now, I haven't read the first Alex & Jackie adventure- First Night, but I do intend to. I can't wait to find out if Weston's writing style in this book accurately reflects the writing in First Night. I'm not a huge fan of the overwhelming geographical and historical facts on Cuchaquicha, but if you can drudge through those parts it is well worth it once you get to the fictional story.

I hope Weston decides to give Alex & Jackie more adventures. But if you're looking for an easy, quick read- look else where. As refreshing and fun as The Elf of Luxembourg is, I suggest it to those who like an educational adventure story. ;)The Elf of Luxembourg OverviewWhat's an older sister to do? It's not all fun fairs and ice-cream. Well, it is - but that's beside the point. When one is in Luxembourg, there is a certain standard to maintain, and vacationing with Elves and Vampires is just so old school. But can Alex convince her younger sister, Jackie, of that? No, of course not, so she may as well get used to it.But deep beneath the ancient city of Luxembourg there lies a secret. The Vampires believe it is protected by the Elf. The Elf believes it is protected by a prophecy concerning Alex and Jackie. And the sisters? They believe shoes in Luxembourg are too expensive. Why are the Vampires going toe-to-toe with an Elf for the pleasure of the sisters' company? Why does the Elf think Alex and Jackie can sing? And just who let Sir Walter Raleigh and the Conquistadors into this story? To answer these questions will take all of the sisters' cunning, bravery and imagination, as well as some souvenir shopping. Because this is the Elf of Luxembourg and this is an Alex and Jackie Adventure.
