The Christmas Giant ReviewI got this in the mail today and read it to my one and two year old tonight. The illustrations were full of details like whorly hair on the giant's knuckles. The story is about a giant and an elf who run into trouble delivering a Christmas tree. They use the skills and talents they already have to solve the problem and deliver something better than what they started with. This is a kind tale, with no bad feelings or disagreements. The story gave us a chance to talk about feeling happy and feeling sad. The final solution is clever and beautiful. My kids loved picking out different things in the book, like trees, starts, beards, etc. When it was over, my three year old said, "Let's read it again." I can't say much better than that. I give out very few 5 star reviews, but this was a beautiful book that I highly recommend. Oh, and my kids loved feeling the texturized Christmas tree in the cover illustration. The Christmas Giant Overview

The Fat Man: A Tale of North Pole Noir ReviewKen Harmon's first novel takes you to the gritty side of Kringle Town and all that goes down while pulling off the Holiday of holidays. You'll find a new appreciation for those characters that strive to keep the meaning of Christmas as pure as the wind-driven snow - no matter what it takes to do it!
This mystery will make you laugh out loud, as well as sit on the edge of your seat, hoping for a Christmas miracle. I would definitely recommend this book to those who love the spirit of St. Nick, as well as a good detective story! The Fat Man: A Tale of North Pole Noir Overview

Santopia - Book One: Santa & the Lost Princess ReviewFar north, in the magical realm of Santopia, the current Santa has a new son. The Wizard issues a prophesy for this new heir to the kingdom, which says baby Nicky will marry the first girl born after him.
But over in the kingdom of Drear, the Countess is nearly about to give birth. After hearing the prophesy, she induces labor and is pleased when her daughter, Dazzle is born. That is, until she learns another couple has also given birth to a daughter, who may have been born before Dazzle.
Upsetting the Countess of Drear is never a good idea, so this poor couple needs to do something quickly before they and their new daughter lose their lives. Escape is dangerous and nearly impossible, and intrigue and treachery abound.
This story is set at Christmas, and is full of colorful holiday imagery. Many of the Santa traditions are included, making the story feel real. But one thing I found a little confusing was the different races at Santopia that all ended in "elves" - Gelves, Trelves, etc.
I enjoyed this story, and found myself cheering for the young couple to save themselves and their daughter. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the ending, which left the story at an obvious cliff-hanger. If you love Santa and Christmas, I think you'll enjoy this fast-paced and fun tale.

Attack of the Vampire Snowmen ReviewThe great thing about zombie authors is their dedication to the genre...just when I think they have reached the limits of the imagination, I stumble upon something that expands zombie fiction into other genres - engulfs them, really. NOM NOM NOM! While other genres add glitter to their monsters, one author has brought the zombie culture to the North Pole...and vampire snowmen -- a little something from various sub-genres of horror, mixed with suspense, without giving the little ones nightmares.
When I realized that I would be reading a story about vampire snowmen and zombie elves, I didn't know whether to laugh or beat myself with my laptop. After carefully noting in the intro that the author LOVES Christmas and the holiday season, I decided to approach this book with the same seriousness I would give to any fantasy tale. Keep in mind, this is young adult fiction, with the goal of appealing to both children and adults...so, not quite as dark as you might expect, and age appropriate for grade school & up. My 5yr old loved it & wants "the guy who made Nightmare Before Christmas (Tim Burton) to make the book into a movie."
There are Light Elves and Dark Elves; the Light Elves make the toys, and are enjoying a well-deserved night off at an enchanted amusement park. Laidenn realizes that they are about to be attacked by vampire snowman. This is where the author's talent for detail starts to show, when Laidenn prepares to fight with bags of salt. As Laidenn tries to make the other elves aware of the impending danger, we learn more about how the light and dark magic work at the North Pole. We also discover that there are actually two different breeds of vampires as well.
I laughed at the description of the horrible things that took place in Santa's workshop, for instance, Barbie heads with Ken bodies! (Not necessarily scary, but kids will understand how troublesome this can be.) Santa defends his workshop with the stealth and swiftness that would make Van Helsing proud. Don't let the fat, jolly appearance fool you - this Santa has the moves of a warrior. He also has command of zombie elves! This is the Santa I want at my house.
I appreciate that Alano doesn't slack off just because he's writing for a younger audience; too often, I read YA fiction that seems like the authors don't think they have to include as much detail. This is a great story for the whole family, especially if you're already fans of the classic monsters: vampires, zombies etc. I know Christmas will never be the same at our house again.
Happily, this is not the only YA tale from this author: check out Hand Puppet Horror.Attack of the Vampire Snowmen OverviewWith only a few days before the big night, Santa Claus is kidnapped by an army of vampire snowmen; it's up to Laidenn, Claus' only dark elf-in-training, to enlist the help of the living dead elves to defeat the snowmen and bring Claus back.

Squidge: Little Elf, Big Trouble ReviewSquidge is set for youth ages 4-8, and the next time my god children come over I plan to have them read it to me and ask if they like it. As an adult I can see where a child would be entertained by the story, the pictures are clear and the story is about what someone in that age group can identify with.
The theme of the story is when we make mistakes we cannot run and hide from them we have to stand up and face the consequences. A much needed concept for our children today. An underlining theme stay a child for as long as you can, because when you try to grow to fast you make mistakes moving in a larger world.

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition (With Blue-eyed Girl Elf Wearing Skirt) ReviewI love this girl version of the Elf on the Shelf, and bought it for my daughter last year. It is an absolute favorite tradition in our house. My daughter still talks about it and keeps asking when the elf is coming to stay. My husband had a lot of fun with her and making up stories about the elf on a daily basis and the funny places I found it daily (this elf mysteriously moves around the house to keep an eye on all of us). We used it not only as inspiration for our daughter to be on her best behavior but it kept us - parents - in line, too!! Kids aren't the only ones who get crabby, ya know? The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition (With Blue-eyed Girl Elf Wearing Skirt) Overview
