When Santa Fell To Earth ReviewBen is just beginning to get excited about the forthcoming holiday season, when he learns that his parents have decided to forgo the chilly weather, and head to a tropical environment where they can hang out in the sun, and sip fruity drinks. This news instantly sends Ben into a downward spiral, leaving him upset, and wishing that Christmas vacation will never come. But there is one thing lurking about Niklas that could put him out of business for good. An extreme evil known only as Gerold Geronimus Golynch - a bad Santa who wants nothing more than to take Niklas' boots, and turn him into a bar of chocolate. Cornelia Funke is certainly one of the most intrepid new fantasy writers to hit the scene in years, and the release of her holiday novel, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH, only illustrates that fact even more. Funke's trademark magical scenes, and enchanting moments prevail in this fantastical account of two children looking to help the "real" Santa Claus save Christmas. Funke adds her own little touches regarding the holidays, from making Niklas Goodfellow look quite different from what Santa Claus is known to look like; to giving the elves snippy personalities laced with bad language and fierce tempers. The angels Matilda and Emmanuel are saintly characters, whose good-natured, loving attitudes stay true to the spirit of Christmas; while the marzipan-loving Twinklestar is a supreme trouble maker, who you can't help but love. Dragon Champion (Age of Fire, Book 1) ReviewE. E. Knight's Dragon Champion continues the popular tradition of animal perspective fantasy, but instead of rabbits, moles, or other woodland creatures as the protagonists, he carries it a step further with an animal which itself is a fantasy - dragons. It's a very clever concept, and like Knight's Vampire Earth series, he executes the basic concept with wit, excitement and flair.
Told from the viewpoint of Auron (later AuRon, when his wings develop and he can fly), it's a tale of a dying breed among men, Elves and Dwarves, and one dragon's quest to learn his place in the world and how he might change it.
This is not a fairy tale, for there is plenty of graphic violence, and the novel opens with a rather savage birth ritual involving survival of the fittest from a clutch of hatching dragon eggs. Knight blends his story with fascinating dragon lore, and manages to cover nearly everything you've ever heard regarding dragons, keeping the legends plausible, while maintaining his narrative pace and picaresque plot.
Knight does not make the mistake, as so often occurs in this sub-genre of fantasy, of making every human character evil. There are good and bad men, and there are good and bad dragons.
This novel is complete in itself, but my understanding is that Knight plans to continue the series with novels told from the perspectives of AuRon's surviving sister and brother, and then a grand finale fourth volume tying all three together.
Get in on the beginning, readers. It's going to be something special.Dragon Champion (Age of Fire, Book 1) OverviewAfter escaping those who killed his siblings, Young Auron, a rare, defenseless gray dragon, fears he might be the last of his breed. The Paper Bag Christmas ReviewTypically, one would find my wife and I having dissimilar tastes in what we read. She prefers to soak in the 'suspenseful heart-wrenchers', while I tend to enjoy more of the adventurous and humorous stories.
We do, however seldom, find a work of Literature that satisfies us both. "The Paper Bag Christmas" is one such gem that we discovered, love and have added to our family collection. I would highly recommend you do the same.
Milne writes in such a way that you quickly become woven into the fabric of the story, hardly able to stop reading once you have begun. The experiences of the characters become personal and you share every tear and laugh along the way.
A more appropriate recommendation would be to buy two: one for yourself, and one as a gift for a loved one. You are guaranteed to want to share it after you read it. Buying them together will save you on shipping.The Paper Bag Christmas Overview

The Land of the Silver Apples (Sea of Trolls Trilogy) ReviewI love this woman. I love every single thing she's written, albeit some more than others, so I am admittedly very biased when it comes to her works.
The book takes place after The Sea of Trolls when, among other things, Jack's sister Lucy is taken by elves and he has to travel underground to their lands to get her back.
The Land of the Silver Apples is such a good middle book. The story moves along at a great pace, and not once did I want to put it down. She has a delicate touch with the religious issues inherent in writing in this time period (Christian vs. Druidic vs. Nordic), and writes each in such a way that none of them are put down. It's quite lovely to not have to put up with an author hammering their beliefs down my throat.
I also adored her take on elves. I've never seen anything like it. Very refreshing and original, things quite lacking in the general portrayal of elves.
All her vivid, distinct characters are what really what give this book it's umph, though. Jack has matured, though he still has a lot of growing up to do, and seeing the great variety of characters through is alternately wise, sympathetic, jealous, and juvenile-ly hateful perspectives is just wonderful. A great amount of the cast from the Sea of Trolls returns, and the new additions to the cast are fully-fleshed and original.
The only disappointment I had was that there wasn't a greater role for the Picts. Or, rather, the Pictish Beast. ...it just seemed odd that one of the chapter headers was a Pictish Beast, it's mentioned once in a chapter, it's in the glossary, but... there's nothing else on it. Well, I guess it's such an indistinct beastie that I can say I wouldn't have wanted to tackle it myself.
All in all, another amazing book from an amazing author. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book!The Land of the Silver Apples (Sea of Trolls Trilogy) Overview

Dragon Precinct ReviewHey, I like Keith R.A. DeCandido's genre work elsewhere. He's done some great stuff in the Trek universe, particularly with Klingons in the IKS Gorkon series. But here, in his first novel with original characters, he doesn't quite measure up to his previous efforts.
We are introduced to Danthres and Torin, two lieutenants in the City Guard of Cliff's End. She's a human/elf hybrid, and none too happy about that fact. He's from a family of civilized deep thinkers but wanted to see the world and bust some heads. Together, they make up...well, a couple of world-weary seen-it-all cops in a fairly generic fantasy setting.
On their current case, they're investigating the murder of a famous hero from a band of epic adventuring types. Said hero was minding his own business when he dropped dead in his room at an inn, his neck broken. The wizard detached to civic service says that there are no traces of magical involvement, so evidently the big galoot just...uh...had a bad neck. Or something. Needless to say, the investigators are a bit dubious about the "naturally spontaneously snapping neck" theory and they press on to find answers. And to collect overtime pay.
Meanwhile, we also follow several other cases, which are being pursued by the colleagues of Danthres and Torin. Their comrades include Old Grizzled Vet, Obnoxious Incompetent Newbie, Snarling One-Eyed Captain, Faux Rastafarian, and Generic Guy. Various leads are checked out and witnesses interrogated. And papers are filed and the brass downtown keeps getting in the way of hard-working guards.
So, yeah, it's pretty much a police procedural with a fantasy twist. Is it successful? Well...blandly so. The investigations and their resolutions aren't altogether compelling and the setting isn't really too well-drawn. Efforts at conveying street talk are mainly just embarrassing. And many characters frankly just seem like buffoons or legends in their own mind (although one of the leads gets to reveal the Dark Secret that has made them who they are). Largely, the book serves as the launchpad for a series that the author clearly hopes will follow, where we can see both the protagonists and their environment developed in greater detail.
It's not a bad foray into this type of thing. It's just not that great. I prefer Martin Scott's Thraxas series, but your mileage may vary. At any rate, at less than 300 pages, this novel at least won't suck up a lot of your precious time, so you make the call.Dragon Precinct OverviewGan Brightblade is one of the world's greatest heroes and a personal friend of the Lord and Lady of Cliff's End. So when he's brutally murdered in grubby lodgings in Dragon Precinct, on the eve of a great quest, the Captain of the Guard puts his two best investigators on the case.

Santopia - Book One: Santa & the Lost Princess ReviewFar north, in the magical realm of Santopia, the current Santa has a new son. The Wizard issues a prophesy for this new heir to the kingdom, which says baby Nicky will marry the first girl born after him.
But over in the kingdom of Drear, the Countess is nearly about to give birth. After hearing the prophesy, she induces labor and is pleased when her daughter, Dazzle is born. That is, until she learns another couple has also given birth to a daughter, who may have been born before Dazzle.
Upsetting the Countess of Drear is never a good idea, so this poor couple needs to do something quickly before they and their new daughter lose their lives. Escape is dangerous and nearly impossible, and intrigue and treachery abound.
This story is set at Christmas, and is full of colorful holiday imagery. Many of the Santa traditions are included, making the story feel real. But one thing I found a little confusing was the different races at Santopia that all ended in "elves" - Gelves, Trelves, etc.
I enjoyed this story, and found myself cheering for the young couple to save themselves and their daughter. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the ending, which left the story at an obvious cliff-hanger. If you love Santa and Christmas, I think you'll enjoy this fast-paced and fun tale.

Unlike the brilliant works of J.K. Rowlings who depicted the wonderful story of Hogwarts and Harry Potter et. al. this author not only blends the most of descriptive of poetic and graphic writing to tell his tale but in a dimension J.K. Rowlings never achieved Temple H. Herlund weaves thru out the tale wonderful life lessons for our youth to learn or us aged to be reminded of in terms of the beauty of the light, of nature, of community and commitment to those we love (all of which seems to be in short supply in our lifes today).
I am fortunate as a mother of a 10 year old girl and 12 year old son to have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Herlund personally and buying 3 copies, one for each of us, but as a mother of 49 and a regular reviewer on Amazon I felt it necessary to be the first to rant and rave about this new masterpiece with six more promised in the works. One copy for my family was not enough so to keep the peace so I bought three!!The World of Illusions: The Wise and the Mighty OverviewThis is not simply a story of grand adventures, wizards and magic, but a record of the author's memories of the future brought into the present through the dimensions of time. The Keepers of Elenath ReviewSoon after I started this book, I could easily tell it was Bradburn's first novel. The beginning of the plot was confusing: it revealed something awfully quickly, and I couldn't discern the direction of the storyline at all. These starting events were necessary, but could have been written better. About 100 pages in, the story took a solid form and I began to enjoy it. I was a little disappointed when there wasn't too much of the training-in-secret-practices scene that I always enjoy, but it looks as if that will come in the second book. I noticed that many terms were used a few times too many ("former princess," for example) in a short space of time. Overall, the plot and characters steadily improved as the book progressed.
What this means to a Christian: There are many people in the world who call themselves Christians. Many actually are, but some may not have a true understanding. It is the job of those who do to give them, and everyone else, the truth, and an opportunity to know Christ.The Keepers of Elenath OverviewEvil is stirring in Elenath. A rapid chain of events: a righteous king's murder, a dark queen's seizure of the throne, and the stirring of ancient peoples opens a new chapter in Elenath's history. Dark powers seek to control all and a bare few stand against the sinister forces. At the center of the tempest lies Gwaeron, princess of Anirum. Secrets surround her true identity, and the strange gifts she is capable of are sought after by both sides of the silent war. Tales From Gundarland: Eight humorous stories from the land of the incongruous ReviewThis delightful collection of six short stories and two novellas is set in the mythical realm of Gundarland on a planet named Gundar, which, according to Quense, was named after "the omniscient god who accidentally created the universe with an explosive sneeze caused by snorting a larger-than-average dose of His favorite recreational powder." As you can gather, this work is only for older kids and their insightful parents...
Gunderland itself is populated by such diverse races as "dwarfs, humans, elves, half-pints, yuks and a few lesser races...[that]...live cheek-by-jowl in many cases and get along with no more than the usual interracial hostility". And, don't worry, you definitely don't have to be a geek to enjoy their adventures, despite two of the pieces in Tales from Gundarland being satires of two of the Great Bard's (i.e. Shakespeare's) most popular works: "Romeo & Juliet" and "Merchant of Venison" (a send-up of The Merchant of Venice). A few of the tales are under ten pages, while the others vary substantially in length. All of them, however, are side-splittingly funny, and, if you enjoy the writings of Terry Pratchett, you should enjoy these too. Quense's irreverent take on the world of fantasy is most amusing, I find, when he describes the relationships between fellow characters and between man and beast. Mind you, the characterization of the yuks is also a key source of humor, and reminded me somewhat of the trolls in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Their poor grasp on the English language is most evident in the verbal spats between the yuk brothers, Rolf and Ralf. Quense promises to return to these two characters in other stories, as he likes them too much to ignore them.
In "Chasing Dreams", a hilarious spoof on The Mask of Zorro, and a number of other westerns, the showdown at Okidoky Corral is accompanied by cheer-leading molls, who raise some dust linking arms and performing multiple high leg kicks. In fact, one might say that the women tend to be a feisty bunch throughout the tales, including one princess who refuses to be rescued from a tower by a Warrior-Cook, for fear that she will never be able to show her face at court again if she is saved by anyone other than a nobleman ("Boggerts Blue"). The pages teem with loads of swashbuckling adventure, both on land and sea, with heroes and villains aplenty--just don't expect them to be archetypal!
Quense acknowledges the help that he received from an international group of critics known as the Critters, who helped him to shape the stories. Another group of writers who also provided input into the stories was drawn from as far away and as diverse locations as the Canary Islands, Greece, Britain and Ireland. Saving Santa's Seals (LeapKids) ReviewGreatest kids book I've read in a long time!! I am 43 years young and I thought this book was outstanding, I couldn't put it down and had to finish it!
I thought it was a great twist on Christmas with the Santa's Seals helping Santa bring presents by using underwater caves and beaches to meet him with the presents! You have to have beaches at Christmas!
I also loved that Murphy answered my question as a kid, How does Santa get in your house if you don't have a chimney or fireplace? Of course-magic keys for a one time use to get in the door!! Ingenious!!!
My 11 year old and 9 year old have read it and I'm reading it to my 5 year old now! And they love the book!

The Halfling's Gem (Forgotten Realms: The Icewind Dale Trilogy, Book 3) ReviewFirst off, this is the conclusion of the Icewind Dale Trilogy. I would strongly recommend reading the first two novels in the series, The Crystal Shard and Streams of Silver, to truly enjoy this book. This story picks up with Artemis Entreri, running off with Regis from Mithral Hall, the halfling, to return him to Pasha Pook the leader of the largest thieves' guild in Calimport. Drizzt and friends chase after Entreri to save Regis from the almost certain death that awaits him in Calimport. The plot is pretty straight forward, but there are definitely enough complications to keep it interesting.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was the best book in the trilogy. The Halfling's Gem regains the continuous fast paced adventure that was lost in part of Streams of Silver. I found the supporting characters in this book much better conceived and interesting. The battle scenes in the boat and at Pasha Pook's palace were at least as good as any of the battle scenes in the other two books. Also Drizzt's attempt to find himself and what he stands for really progresses in this book. This continues in the Dark Elf Trilogy, which occurred before he reached Icewind Dale, but was written after the Icewind Dale Trilogy. All in all the writing in this novel has really improved from the first two books. This same quality continues through the rest of the Drizzt series. I was completely and fully blown away. I was not expecting much when I first started this novel as the beginning felt like history class but then before I new it I was on the most amazing trek through the most amazing world and I have this author to thank. If you can stomach a little dry history to get to the juicy details then this novel is sure to please. DYING MOON ReviewI edit novels for LBF Books and I first encountered DYING MOON in a batch of novels that were submitted for publication. To me, this was clearly the standout of the batch and the one that I recommended for publication. Shawn Oetzel seamlessly blends crime drama and fantasy in his debut novel. As the tale unfolds, he explores the clash of elven and human cultures in the modern world and spices it up with enough action that it'll keep you turning the pages.
In the novel, an Elf called Dre Fao'lain is intent on the destruction of all his kind and enters into the world of 21st century Los Angeles to perform the magical ceremony necessary to accomplish his mission. Leaving a series of bodies in his wake, the Elf is pursued by the LAPD. In the meantime the Elves send Kalen Or'Wain, Captain of the Elven Royal Guard, to stop him. He teams up with a special agent who knows about the Elven world, an officer from the LAPD and even a street gang to stop Dre Fao'lain. I really enjoyed the way Shawn Oetzel merged two seemingly disparate genres in this novel.

Wide Eyed (Little House on the Bowery) ReviewOne of the best short fiction books to come out in years. Don't bother reading the summaries because they make the book sound like the rantings of a space case. But I swear the prose comes together to create a series of gorgeous moments that come together into a beautiful, fun, and sad whole. My girlfriend and I read these stories out loud to each other as bedtime stories, and both of us read it on our own. If you like Dave Eggers, Denis Johnson, Isabel Allende, or David Sedaris, I can recommend this book. In Trinie Dalton's tweaked vision of reality, psychic communications between herself and Mick Jagger, The Flaming Lips, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, and Pavement are daily occurrences. In "Oceanic," she resolves to marry a manatee after a drunken pre-party for her best friend's wedding. In "Tiles," four vignettes about bloody accidents in tiled bathrooms intermingle with scenes from Dalton's favorite scary movies.

Featuring oddball prose in the traditions of Dalton's literary heroes--Denton Welch, Robert Walser, and Jane Bowles--these stories have a dreamy, imaginative quality that reveal a peculiar state of mental ecstasy. To be inside the mind of Trinie Dalton is to be escorted into bliss.
