When Santa Fell To Earth ReviewBen is just beginning to get excited about the forthcoming holiday season, when he learns that his parents have decided to forgo the chilly weather, and head to a tropical environment where they can hang out in the sun, and sip fruity drinks. This news instantly sends Ben into a downward spiral, leaving him upset, and wishing that Christmas vacation will never come. But when he encounters a strange young man named Niklas Goodfellow, all of Ben's cynical emotions fly out the window. Niklas has seemingly appeared on Ben's street out of nowhere, his colorful caravan sitting in a strange spot. On a dare, Ben runs up to the door of the caravan, and meets the peculiar person, and so starts the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Ben soon learns that Niklas is the last real Santa Claus, and that his caravan - pulled by his currently missing, marzipan-loving reindeer, Twinklestar - crashed to earth in the midst of a storm, and is now stuck on this oft-times money-hungry street as he searches for the snow white colored reindeer, and attempts to fix the wheels on his broken caravan. But Niklas is not alone. He has brought two chubby angels with him - Matilda and Emmanuel - who flit around the good-natured man; along with a chest full of little elves who are preparing presents for all of the good little boys and girls. But there is one thing lurking about Niklas that could put him out of business for good. An extreme evil known only as Gerold Geronimus Golynch - a bad Santa who wants nothing more than to take Niklas' boots, and turn him into a bar of chocolate. But now, with the help of Ben, and a bug-eyed girl named Charlotte, along with her dog Mutt, Niklas plans to fight off Gerold, and bring the true spirit of Christmas back to every girl and boy in the world. But if he fails, Christmas may be lost forever.
Cornelia Funke is certainly one of the most intrepid new fantasy writers to hit the scene in years, and the release of her holiday novel, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH, only illustrates that fact even more. Funke's trademark magical scenes, and enchanting moments prevail in this fantastical account of two children looking to help the "real" Santa Claus save Christmas. Funke adds her own little touches regarding the holidays, from making Niklas Goodfellow look quite different from what Santa Claus is known to look like; to giving the elves snippy personalities laced with bad language and fierce tempers. The angels Matilda and Emmanuel are saintly characters, whose good-natured, loving attitudes stay true to the spirit of Christmas; while the marzipan-loving Twinklestar is a supreme trouble maker, who you can't help but love. The friendship that develops between Ben and the unlikely Charlotte is quite a treat to witness; while the snowy world of Yule Land is a beauty all in itself. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations (sometimes full-page ones) by Paul Howard, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH is a wonderful, fantastical joyride into the world of Santa Claus, and the many hardships he encounters each year. I was disappointed in both the illustrations and the writing. There was nothing clever or amusing about this book at all, which is too bad since the premise should have led to a good childrens' story. Holidays on Ice: Stories ReviewThe holidays bring out something truly special in David Sedaris, making this more a "best of" than a mere holiday book. It's simply brilliant and, as many reviewers have experienced, one of those rare books that may cause you to laugh out loud in spite of yourself. Its only flaw is that it's a short book, but in content it's a giant.
Avid NPR listeners will instantly recognize the first essay in this book, "Santaland Diaries"; the author's reading of that story is their single most requested encore. His description of becoming a Christmas Elf at Macy's is a true guilty pleasure; scathingly unkind and screamingly funny. If you ever held an undignified job, this is somehow your story - even if you never (pardon the pun) stooped so low as to play an elf.
Sedaris writes like a post-modern Mark Twain, with a dry and piercing wit that drips with charm and cynicism in equal measure. The Undead That Saved Christmas ReviewI got my copy of this book this weekend for my boyfriends son, whom couldn't get his nose out of it all weekend. I thought this would be a really great review due to the fact that he is 7 years old and there isn't an age limit for reading this book. I read a few stories in it to ensure it was OK for him to read and he loved it. It has an index in the front and great graphics. He started with all the comics inside the book first and then read the stories that sounded interesting. He ended up reading the whole book in 2 days. Wonderful job to all the people who put the time in to make this happen. The Man in the Cinder Clouds ReviewTHE MAN IN THE CINDER CLOUDS is one of those middle grade books that the grown-ups get sucked into along with their kids. You think you bought if for your young reader but after you browse chapter one you just sort of... can't stop.
For the kids: The story starts with an adventure gone dreadfully boring as a boy accompanies his dad on an expedition to the North Pole. He discovers that the exotic location can't overcome the drudgery of hanging out with scientists for a few weeks, even if Santa Claus is reputed to live somewhere nearby. The scientists make a discovery in the ice, though, that captures not only Jason's imagination but everyone else's. For one thing, not even the scientists can figure out why the book they've found appears to each person in his native language.
If the book they've uncovered is what it seems, it tells the tale of how Santa Claus came to be the figure we all know today. The traditions and images we associate with Santa are all rooted in his first Christmas venture to find one example of goodness in humanity. He fulfills his own quest while helping a brother and sister who desperately need an ally.
For the grown-ups: THE MAN IN THE CINDER CLOUDS is intricate, with two stories unfolding together as Jason discovers the history of Santa Claus and the children in the Santa story overcome their own hardship by taking care of each other. It's also funny, with humor and references the kids will get but doesn't rely on lowbrow jokes that an older reader would just find silly. The wit shines through in chapter one and the story carries you right through to the end.
I'm going to recommend this one to my school librarian as well as my kid's teachers.
