Big Fun (Adventure of Meno) ReviewFrom the other reviews, you would think this isn't a fun and memorable book..My kids love this book.
The farting by Meno and his friend make them laugh every time.
My kids love to sing the Meno song at the end of the book and I hear them singing it when they think I'm not listening.
It's not a book to teach your kid proper english, but it is very entertaining.Big Fun (Adventure of Meno) Overview GREETINGS EARTHLINGS! I AM MENO. ELF OF SPACE, HERE TO VISIT HUMAN RACE! The Christmas Giant ReviewI got this in the mail today and read it to my one and two year old tonight. The illustrations were full of details like whorly hair on the giant's knuckles. The story is about a giant and an elf who run into trouble delivering a Christmas tree. They use the skills and talents they already have to solve the problem and deliver something better than what they started with. This is a kind tale, with no bad feelings or disagreements. The story gave us a chance to talk about feeling happy and feeling sad. The final solution is clever and beautiful. My kids loved picking out different things in the book, like trees, starts, beards, etc. When it was over, my three year old said, "Let's read it again." I can't say much better than that. I give out very few 5 star reviews, but this was a beautiful book that I highly recommend. Oh, and my kids loved feeling the texturized Christmas tree in the cover illustration. The Christmas Giant Overview

Why the Chimes Rang ReviewI remember reading this when I was young--it belonged to my mother when she was a young girl--it has always been my favorite Christmas book, capturing the true meaning of Christmas and of giving in a simple yet rich and beautiful story. If I could have but one Christmas book this would be the one.Why the Chimes Rang Overview"Why the Chimes Rang" by is a collection of highly imaginative modern fairy tales which inspire children to right behavior. Written by Raymond Macdonald Alden, this classic includes two Christmas stories--"Why the Chimes Rang" and "In the Great Walled Country", plus a variety of other stories (such as "The Knights of the Silver Shield) suitable for different seasons of the year. The title story, "Why the Chimes Rang," is a truly endearing narration about two young boys who dream of going to a special Christmas service at a somewhat distant church. It will take the boys all afternoon to walk to the church. Along the way they come upon a woman who has fallen in the snow and is in desperate need of help. The older brother stays with her and sends "little brother" on to the church for the Christmas service. Afterwards, he is to return with help. The Christmas chimes in this church have not been heard for many years, but they rang that night-all because of two young boys, who in all of their innocence truly understood about giving and Christmas. The favorite Christmas story of many, "Why the Chimes Rang" captures the true meaning of Christmas in a simple yet rich and beautiful way. If you could have but one book (outside of the Bible) for Christmas, this should be the one!

Annie Clark And The Pearls Of Wisdom Review"Annie Clark and the Pearls of Wisdom" is a magical fantasy for children of all ages. The author gets us right into the story with great economy, gradually revealing Annie's back story as we move forward in action. We sympathize right away with Annie, who tries to cope with the shocking news that she is not at all who she thought she was. Browne does an excellent job conveying Annie's mixed feelings of curiosity, excitement and anxiety over the new magical world that flamboyant Grandma Rose pulls her into. The promise of a centaur ballet and hints that Annie has not been told all there is to know about her own history keep us hooked to the story. I hope I get a chance to read the rest.Annie Clark And The Pearls Of Wisdom OverviewThirteen-year-old Annie Clark spends the summer in a magical land after unexpectedly learning she has special powers. She rides flying horses at her aunt and uncle's ranch and attends school where she meets new friends including a rebellious tooth fairy who hates to touch teeth and a centaur with a broken leg. An oracle, called the Pearls of Wisdom, indicates she must help with a complex spell. She attends a Royal Ball where her magic dancing shoes run away with her. Annie must find out who is trying to kidnap her while she helps her new friends and learns the truth about her family.A Publishers Weekly reviewer said Annie Clark and the Pearls of Wisdom is "reminiscent of pop fantasies like Ella Enchanted and Harry Potter" and the author, "shows promise, thanks to cute ideas like a disappearing opaky (invisible pet), Non-Stop shoes, an oracle who communicates via the pearls of wisdom and some dangerous 'expectacles'."

When Santa Lost His Ho Ho Ho ReviewI purchased this book for my 2 year old son in advance of Christmas, and thought it would be a cute book by the premise. I was disappointed in both the illustrations and the writing. There was nothing clever or amusing about this book at all, which is too bad since the premise should have led to a good childrens' story. It seems like something a teenager would write for a younger sibling. When Santa Lost His Ho Ho Ho Overview
It's almost Christmas, and everyone—from Mrs. Claus right down to the littlest elf—is getting ready for the big day. But there's something wrong at the North Pole. It's just a bit too . . . quiet. Oh no! Santa has lost his laugh! Where could it be? And how can there be Christmas without Santa's Ho! Ho! Ho!

From the author of Santa's New Suit and Who'll Pull Santa's Sleigh Tonight? comes a holiday romp that's sure to make readers giggle with glee.

Saving Santa's Seals (LeapKids) ReviewGreatest kids book I've read in a long time!! I am 43 years young and I thought this book was outstanding, I couldn't put it down and had to finish it!
I thought it was a great twist on Christmas with the Santa's Seals helping Santa bring presents by using underwater caves and beaches to meet him with the presents! You have to have beaches at Christmas!
I also loved that Murphy answered my question as a kid, How does Santa get in your house if you don't have a chimney or fireplace? Of course-magic keys for a one time use to get in the door!! Ingenious!!!
My 11 year old and 9 year old have read it and I'm reading it to my 5 year old now! And they love the book!
Just a great story line for any age!Saving Santa's Seals (LeapKids) Overview
"A fun read! Murphy sure knows how to weave a story. He had me from page one. Whether you're a young reader or an adult, you'll want to join the journey. And don't forget to admire the view: Adam Taylor's illustrations are as vivid and evocative as the writing."—Lisa Mullins, PRI's The World

"A captivating, fresh addition to a long list of Christmas titles. Murphy is one of those rare adults who is strongly in tune with his eight-year-old self, able to capture the excitement, adventure, and feelings of childhood, and the magic of Christmas. His tale of twists and turns, actions and dilemmas is told as if he actually lived it. . . . Perhaps he did!"—Martha Zschock, author of Journey Around Cape Cod

"A sweet, imaginative story about something that writers, budding writers and educators can relate to: writer's block."—Emily Chetkowski, author of Pumpkin Smile

Praise for the Belltown Mystery series:

"Murphy is a Robert Ludlum for the 10-14 year old set, but with more likeable characters and more fun amidst the terror. —Dan Scully, Boston Magazine

"A novel that middle school readers will devour."—ForeWord Magazine

When eight-year-old Ryder asks Santa to help his uncle Ted overcome writer's block and create another amazing story, he cannot know that they'll both be getting the best present ever. But is it real, or just a wonderful Christmas dream?

T.M. Murphy, featured in the new book 101 Highly Successful Novelists, is the author of the Belltown Mystery series, listed as a Favorite New Series by BookSense Children's 76. Murphy spends his days touring schools, motivating kids to write, and teaching young writers during the summer at The Writers' Shack in his hometown.

Adam Taylor's diversified illustration and animation talent has appeared in television, film, publishing and the Internet, with projects for MGM Studios, Disney, Virgin Records, CBS, National Geographic Kids, VH-1 and MTV. Productions include Pink Panther, Baby Pink Panther & Pals, Stargate Infinity, Bulletproof Monk, and the "Pink Panther's Penthouse Party" music video featuring Henry Mancini's Grammy-Award-winning "Pink Panther" theme. Adam, a Massachusetts native, now lives in Los Angeles.

The Time Entity Trilogy (Heaven's Jewel, The Eternity Stone, Futures Sown) ReviewI liked the interesting characters and settings and this is a unique version of time travel. It has a lot of symbolism and philosophy mixed with the action.Besides being one of the better sci-fi books I have read I like the relationships between the siblings. I have twin siblings and they definitely acted like this when we were growing up. It's like I got to reminisce. They are all striving to prove themselves and cope with difficulty. They have the normal arguments especially with relatives close in age.The kids in this book have responsibility and act with independence, but their elders are still in the background so it's like they have some supervision. That's not true in a lot of kids books. The whole story spans three generations. The grandchildren of the original characters have the most adventures but the older characters are still active in the last two books. This would appeal to a range of readers. I think kids would like it. I am forty-seven and I liked it.The Time Entity Trilogy (Heaven's Jewel, The Eternity Stone, Futures Sown) OverviewHeaven's Jewel: Aaron, Patrick, and Christine Wallace are trying to find a way home after surviving the plane crash that killed their parents and marooned them on a mysterious island. Thanks to the manipulative antics of the Time Entity, their quest will take many months and span many lands.Their journey is full of the unexpected. However, events such as encountering trolls and dragons in a magical garden, seeking the mythical Spidersong to free Jewel Trees from a curse, visiting a futuristic city, sailing beneath the Glacier of Dreams, and witnessing the birth of the Time Entity are nothing compared to the surprise of discovering that their actions hold the key to the survival of all of mankind. The Eternity Stone: As the time nears for the people of the planet to take refuge in the protected place known as Heaven's Jewel, the exact location of the mysterious island is as yet unknown. In order to buy time, the four grandchildren of the original travelers search for the Eternity Stone, the only object capable of stopping time worldwide. However, before the search for the stone can even begin, the four are called upon to tackle a set of challenges on Elmara Lodés in which they must survive encounters with phantasms, gooleegungs, and other foul creatures.Amidst the many twists and turns of their journey, the new travelers form unusual alliances and make difficult decisions that actually end up changing the events of the past for their ancestors.Once the stone is found, they must piece together an unusual puzzle in order to finally locate the safe haven for mankind.Futures Sown: What if Spidersong and the Jewel Trees never existed?Events might have taken a very different turn, and the place of refuge for mankind might never exist. In this final segment of the Time Entity Trilogy, the travelers must once again face a series of difficult and bizarre challenges in order to finally secure the safe haven. With the Time Entity still engaged in his quest to outmaneuver Death, the double twins once again traverse the Circles of Time to lay the foundation for the future.Joined by new friends, and familiar faces, their path takes them to a valley of clouds, through a deserted underwater city, and into a realm riddled by fire tornadoes and earth tremors. They must also pass an unusual test in a candy factory in order to complete their quest to locate the seeds to plant the Jewel Trees.Similar to their bargain to obtain the Eternity Stone, the travelers once again feel conflicted when called upon to help create Mirrorseed, the evil fortress of elf enchantments and experiments. However, under the guidance of the Fate Entity, they are eventually able to understand that even some very unpleasant things are meant to be. Timeline ofKey Events2010: The plane crash maroons Aaron, Patrick, and Christine on the island.2036: The original travelers pay a visit to RuinFoster's mother.2077: The double twins begin their own adventuresin Elmara Lodés.2089: The migration to the island begins.2115: The last of the settlers make it to Heaven'sJewel, and the Doorway in the Sea closes.6051: The Historian welcomes Aaron, Patrick, andChristine on their first visit to Heaven's Jewel.

Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel ReviewThis is an amazing adventure book that will more than appeal to middle-grade boys who have even the slightest sense of adventure - or just enjoy a good story.
Patrick O'Sullivan is a boy, the son of a simple potato farmer, who dreams of great adventures, and even goes out to create them. He pulls his best friend Barry reluctantly along with him. He thinks it's a grand adventure when he meets a faery named Elianne, but that doesn't compare to the adventure he gets when he meets the Leprechaun Grady. Grady tells him he needs Patrick's help to get the rainbow and pot of gold back from the trolls who have stolen it.
From faeries to elves to leprechauns, trolls, river monsters and witches, this books has a fairytale character for everyone. If you've ever wondered about the pot at the end of the rainbow, and what would happen if it were taken away, here's your story.
While I can guarantee the appeal of this book to boys between the ages of 8-14, I quite enjoyed it myself - and I'm a forty-something mom. It reminds me of the tales I used to tell my own sons when they were small. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good adventure story.Saving the Rainbow: A Patrick O'Sullivan Novel OverviewTwelve-year-old Patrick is a bored, potato farmer's son, irritated with his sister's nagging and his ordinary life.He dreams of adventure, but never expects these dreams to come true until he meets a leprechaun named Grady.Grady needs Patrick's help to rescue the rainbow, that has been stolen by trolls, along with the pot o' gold. After studying the boy from afar, Grady knows he's just the lad that will be up to a challenge like this.Aye, it was lucky he caught sight of the laddie in the first place.Patrick thinks of himself as fearless, especially after putting the frog in ole Ms. Flannigan's school satchel, so he's more than ready to go along on such a quest. The two set off on a journey across the Irish countryside, venturing into the demon-filled Black Forest where the trees come to life at sunset. They must cross a precarious foot bridge, face dark caves and are attacked by angry owls before Patrick endures the ultimate test of battling the trolls for the rainbow and pot o' gold. Will Patrick really be brave enough to rescue the rainbow?SAVING THE RAINBOW is a magical tale for children and young adults. It explores the nature of fantasy and reality, safety and danger, and what it means to grow up.

Owl Puke, the Book ReviewI was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It appears to be designed to appeal to kids, but turns out to also have stunning array of fantastic information, often more than you find in "serious" owl books (e.g., "North American Owls", or "Owls the Silent Fliers"). Also, maybe less than half of the book is directly about "owl puke", the rest being jam-packed with sections on owl calls, hearing and vision, hunting technique, how they stay cool, mating, digestion, puking in the animal kingdom (that's right, horses can't puke), a recipe for "owl puke" candy, etc. And naturally if your intent is to examine some owl pellets, then of course this is a great book for that too. Despite the great (and accurate) technical content, it would not be intimidating for a youngster to read. And it's sprinkled with humor. Highly recommended (by someone over 40).Owl Puke, the Book OverviewKids love science-especially when it's hands-on-and kids love yucky stuff. The Owl Puke Book and Owl Pellet brings the best of those two worlds together in a unique package that follows directly in the tradition of The Bug Book & Bug Bottle and The Bones Book & Skeleton (which together have 3.3 million copies in print). What is an owl pellet? It's the football-shaped object regurgitated twice a day by owls, which contains the skeleton of at least one owl meal, be it a mouse, vole, shrew, or small bird. Used in elementary schools to teach the food web--but virtually unavailable at retail--a professionally collected, heat-sterilized owl pellet is now married to a lively, two-color illustrated book filled with facts and related activities about these most amazing birds. And what a story the Owl Puke Book tells--of the food chain, animal anatomy, life in the forest; of a bird that could read the bottom line of an eye chart from one mile away; and of a fierce hunter that swallows its prey headfirst and digests everything but the bones, which it spits back up in a pellet. As for the story the pellet tells, kids need only a toothpick to find out. The package includes a tray to hold the bones and a chart to help identify the pellet's contents. It's a hoot.

Trip To The North Pole (The Polar Express: The Movie) ReviewSaid a kindly newspaper writer to a little girl who wasn't sure if Santa Claus was real. "The Polar Express" recalls the sentiment of this letter and in fine style, "Trip to the North Pole" takes readers on a memorable ride.
You know, one thing about trains --- It doesn't matter where they're going, what matters is deciding to get on. So says The Conductor, and in this case, readers will enjoy the chance to get back on board for another story based on "The Polar Express." This novelization takes what you like about the film and combines it with additional material from the original script. It even integrates a portion of the song "When Christmas Comes to Town" directly into the story.
Fans of the film who are old enough to read chapter novels will appreciate the extra attention to detail given in this story. Much of the dialogue is extended and there are also nice bonsues, such as the Hero Boy (who is referred to simply as "The Boy" in the text) shaking his head at a display he finds fake and extended ramblings from the Know-it-All Boy. If your kids enjoyed the film, but aren't yet old enough to read chapter boosk, you might consider reading this story aloud to them.
Normally, I find books based on movies that were based on books in the first place to often be so-so at best. But this is a Christmas treat for all fans of the film who truly believe. This book includes fifteen still photos from the film, all in color.Trip To The North Pole (The Polar Express: The Movie) OverviewStraight from the silver screen comes the story of the Polar Express, with an eight-page color insert of movie scenes.

The Completely Fantastical Edition: The Field Guide; The Seeing Stone; Lucinda's Secret; The Ironwood Tree; The Wrath of Mulgarath (Spiderwick Chronicles) ReviewThe short review: If you like the stories, and are not attached to the illustrations, or if you are somebody who just wants to read the book, but again, are not overly concerned about illustrations peppering the text, this book is great. The book is slightly larger than the other editions by a inch in height and a half inch in width (it's roughly the size of an old Book Club edition hardcover). Printing quality is good and the new cover is pretty and makes wonderful use of spot-varnishing (where some parts are glossier than others). In addition to the full text of all 5 books, it has the 3 "lost chapters" that were put out as three small paperbacks in cereal boxes to promote the film a couple of years ago. It also has 42 beautiful pages of sketches, drawings and notes from the artist, as well as 17 pin-ups by other artists.
However, for die-hard collectors, or lovers of the artwork in these books, you will want this new edition, but don't sell your individual books or throw those "cereal" books on ebay just yet. Here's an OCD-friendly list of what's been reproduced or not reproduced in the new collected edition.
** specific references use the format Book/Page (i.e. b1/p22 means Book 1, page 22). The "cereal books are "cb" instead of "b" **

- Hogsqueal pen & ink illustration from "cereal" books 2 & 3 (cb2/p59, cb3/p59).
- "The Boggart" pen & ink portrait from "cereal" books 1-3 (slightly modified version of b1/p69).
- "Sprite" pen & ink portrait from "cereal" book 3 (slightly modified from the "Basic Sprite Body" in the Care and Feeding of Sprites book, but cropped a little and featuring wings and "clothes" that are not on the original drawing).
- "The Grace Kids" pen & ink portrait from "cereal" books 1-3. It is primarily a composite/cropping of their three separate portraits (b1/p2, b1/p3 & b1/p16), but has been redrawn slightly to give Mallory a different shirt. This is similar to, but not the same as, the colored portrait from the back of box set's slipcase.
- Field Guide text entries from the back of "cereal" book 2 ("Goblins" and "Brownies")
- Field Guide text entries from the back of "cereal" book 3 ("Hobgoblins" and "Griffins")

- 2 watercolored pen & ink illustrations used as covers for "cereal" books 2 & 3. The Puzzling Puzzles: Bothersome Games Which Will Bother Some People (A Series of Unfortunate Events Activity Book) ReviewThis puzzle book is hysterical! I thought it would be a puzzle book just for little kids, and the puzzles would all just be really easy, but I love Lemony Snicket and puzzles, so I got it anyway. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this book has just as much Lemony Snicket humor as the series. Seriously, the puzzles are hysterical. And you have to read all the answers, because that's where most of the funny parts are. The puzzles aren't very challenging, but it's very fun. I'm in college, and I and my friends have loved looking through this book. The Puzzling Puzzles: Bothersome Games Which Will Bother Some People (A Series of Unfortunate Events Activity Book) Overview
From mazes and puzzles to word games and crafts, this book is as clever and entertaining as the series for which it is named.

Kringle ReviewLong ago, when goblins and elves roamed the earth, and ghosts and frost loomed all around, a young boy named Kringle came into existence. He was a quiet boy who lived a solitary existence. That is, until his twelfth winter. On his twelfth winter, goblins attacked young Kringle's home, casting him into the wilderness. Now, Kringle finds himself alone in the midst of a frightening world. But after a short time, fate intervenes. Kringle, after numerous encounters with pirates, elves, and the threat of goblins in search of an epic battle, Kringle realizes that he has a destiny to fulfill. One that will prove that even a lone boy, like himself, has the power to change the world forever as we know it.
It is impossible for me to pass up a book related to Christmas, so when I saw the display of Tony Abbott's KRINGLE at the bookstore a few weeks ago, I knew that I had to read it. KRINGLE is unlike any other story about Christmas on the market today. It is filled with danger, excitement, peril, and the joy of bringing happiness to others. The fact that Abbott has included a magic, fantasy-like touch to the story only makes it better. Overall, this is an enchanting new fantasy story that is perfect for any time of the year, be it Christmas, or the Fourth of July.
