Realms of Fantasy is a dazzling collection of the dark and the light sides of the soul. Each story is well paced and well written with humorous characters that radiate emotions so intense, you feel them come to life. The erotic, sultry love scenes produce an increase in body temperature. The extraordinary Shayne Carmichael and Mychael Black created stories I found unparalleled. Each saga is incredible; I developed a real fondness for the demon Alael.

He thinks it's a grand adventure when he meets a faery named Elianne, but that doesn't compare to the adventure he gets when he meets the Leprechaun Grady. Grady tells him he needs Patrick's help to get the rainbow and pot of gold back from the trolls who have stolen it.
From faeries to elves to leprechauns, trolls, river monsters and witches, this books has a fairytale character for everyone. If you've ever wondered about the pot at the end of the rainbow, and what would happen if it were taken away, here's your story.
While I can guarantee the appeal of this book to boys between the ages of 8-14, I quite enjoyed it myself - and I'm a forty-something mom. It reminds me of the tales I used to tell my own sons when they were small. Luthiens Gamble (Crimson Shadow) ReviewR.A. Salvatore proves with this book that he was, at the time, running short on original ideas. Drizzt is my favorite character of all time, so I am fully aware of Salvatore's talents, but this book is lacking - much like the others in the series. For starters, there are just TOO many similarities to Tolkien to be ignored - the names Luthien and Eriador have been ripped right out of Middle-earth. The battle with the dragon is clearly the confrontation between Smaug and Bilbo modified to fit into Salvatore's story. And lastly, the character Brind'Amore, though a decent character, seems very much akin to Gandalf and therefore lacks in originality. The two major things that make this book worth reading, however, are Salvatore's trademark action scenes and the wonderful "highway-halfling," Oliver De'Burrows. But if you haven't read any of the Drizzt books, read them instead.Luthiens Gamble (Crimson Shadow) OverviewIn this sequel to The Sword of Bedwyr, the Crimson Shadow must rouse the peasants and fierce tribes of Eriador to fight the demonic Wizard-King Greensparrow's bloodthirsty warriors and save their beloved city of Caer MacDonald.

Chasing the Dragon (Quantum Gravity, Book 4) ReviewCHASING THE DRAGON, the fourth installment in Justina Robson's "Quantum Gravity" series, opens with our cyborgified heroine Lila Black wandering the beaches of Otopia -- that is, Earth -- distracted and silent, in a tattered dress. It's fifty years after the main events of the previous book, GOING UNDER, but only a few months have passed for Lila since she parted from the mostly-dead Zal, nearly killed by the late and unlamented faery Jack the Giantkiller. It's not clear why Lila and her demon husband Teazle got kicked forward in time at the end of GOING UNDER, but a lot has changed on Otopia and elsewhere, and not for the better.
Having lost her parents, her sister, her sister-in-law Sorcha, her husband Zal, and others, not to mention being displaced from her time, Lila is depressed, suicidal, homicidal, and most of all desperately seeking Zal. She sends Teazle off on a mission that involves him slaughtering half of the ruling demons in Demonia, and gets recruited by the seriously weird new Agency head Temple Greer (a dead ringer for James Lester in the TV show "Primeval") ... to hunt down and kill Teazle. Meanwhile, Zal is being held in some kind of strange limbo, Teazle gets caught in a serious trap, and Ghost hunter Calliope Jones washes up, along with a whole lot of ghost ships, along Otopia's shores. Somebody, somewhere, is doing something intensely dangerous and foolish, and it is up to Lila and her friends to figure out who, what, where, why, and how to stop him/her/it.
As in the earlier books, Lila spends the first half of the book or so in Otopia as the scene gets set, and then ventures off into a new realm -- in this case, the boundary between the ghost lands and the Void, the place from where the first dragon -- or whatever she was -- came forth to create the universe. I have to say that, even though this place gives Robson space to contemplate a warped version of contemporary cosmology, it isn't all that interesting. The goose that's being chased also turns out to be an odd and not very compelling bird, and the resolution of the chase -- the cataclysmic climax that we've come to expect from the three earlier books -- is a serious let-down.
On the plus side, CHASING THE DRAGON continues the development of a cast of interesting characters and continues to deepen our understanding a of a complex set of parallel worlds. It is sprinkled with humor, including not only Lila's sardonic takes on events, but Temple Greer's facetious remarks and the behavior of Lila's faery armor-with-a-mind-of-its-own, which sometimes kits her out as a southern belle, and at other times tends towards the even more bizarre. On the minus side, the book lacks a clear focus. The identity of the "villain" -- and even the existence of such a person -- doesn't come until very late, and we learn much less about dragons than you might expect from the title. Some of the side plots, like about the rogue "androids", lead nowhere, and others are too lengthy. In other words, CHASING THE DRAGON isn't likely to meet the high expectations of fans, but also isn't likely to be a huge disappointment.Chasing the Dragon (Quantum Gravity, Book 4) Overview

Selling Out (Quantum Gravity, Book 2) ReviewIf Amazon would let me I'd give this book a 4.5. The culture and descriptions of Demonia were great. Sometimes I felt that if I closed my eyes I'd be able to see Demonia perfectly. I really like that her cultures for each race are so different and that she didn't make the mistake of "humanizing" all her races like so many other authors. If it takes a sci-fi author to write some really great futuristic/urban fantasy I say please, please, please!
There's only two problems I can see anyone having with this book and the first isn't all that bad once you get used to it. Instead of just following Lila like in the first book we are following Lila, Zal, and Malichi and for most of the book they're all in different worlds which is a little more confusing than just changing characters. The bigger problem, to me anyway, is that there are a lot of loose ends and no real ending in this book. A few loose ends are to be expected in a series book, but I like there to be a clear ending to every book. Don't get me wrong, this isn't one of those cliffhanger endings either, but after stirring up that much trouble, solving hardly any of it, and then turning a few pages only to find the end was a letdown.Selling Out (Quantum Gravity, Book 2) Overview

To Light a Candle: The Obsidian Trilogy, Book Two Review
The middle book in many trilogies often seems to lack *something* in comparison to the first and last installments, but that is not the case with this second installment of the Obsidian Trilogy.
It took me much of the first book, "The Outstretched Shadow," to really get to know the characters, and it wasn't until the latter half of the book that I really became invested in the story. But Lackey and Mallory have managed to keep that investment from waning even a bit with this book. It starts out where the last left off, and doesn't slow down for a moment. It kept me glued to the story from cover to cover and left me wanting for more. I'm ready for the third book, now!
In "To Light a Candle," the characters I've come to know and care about in the fist book of this trilogy evolve a great deal, as does the overall plot. Kellen finally comes into his own, his sister and best-friend unite, and the Endarkened's plot to destroy human-kind continues to fester at a rapid pace, aided by Armathelia's continued blindness. Add to this some new intriguing characters and well-timed surprises along the way, and I found this book more difficult to put down the first.
Along with "The Outstretched Shadow," "To Light a Candle" makes the Obsidian trilogy a must-read series for anyone who enjoys a solid fantasy epic. I definitely recommend it.
