I was disappointed in both the illustrations and the writing. There was nothing clever or amusing about this book at all, which is too bad since the premise should have led to a good childrens' story. Saving Santa's Seals (LeapKids) ReviewGreatest kids book I've read in a long time!! I am 43 years young and I thought this book was outstanding, I couldn't put it down and had to finish it!
I thought it was a great twist on Christmas with the Santa's Seals helping Santa bring presents by using underwater caves and beaches to meet him with the presents! You have to have beaches at Christmas!
I also loved that Murphy answered my question as a kid, How does Santa get in your house if you don't have a chimney or fireplace? Of course-magic keys for a one time use to get in the door!! Ingenious!!!
My 11 year old and 9 year old have read it and I'm reading it to my 5 year old now! And they love the book!

Every child loves Fairy Tales or fantasies of one type or another. If you are a knitter, this book can make a child's dream come true. Like the title says, the book is filled with Fairy Tale Knits.
The very first project is a sky blue Snow Queen Coat that any little girl would love. It has a lovely lace pattern and clear instructions. It even comes with a little knit capelet and hand muff. The Little Red Riding Hood cape in red is perfect for the girl in your life. It is knit with a relatively simple lace pattern. There are several elf designs including slippers and stockings for anyone who loves to felt. The Magic Carpet is adorable and can take your child to any destination of his dreams. It is knit in a colorful blue and green striped pattern with multi-colored triangle embellishments on the border. There are several pirate outfits for the guys, complete with skulls and crossbones. There's also a wonderful green Robin Hood jacket. I like that the book is balanced for gender - - outfits for both boys and girls.
There are crowns galore - - for princes, princesses, kings and queens. These are a bit easier to knit than some of the other projects in the book.
There's a technique section that shows the various techniques and abbreviations used in the book. I like that the instructions are written out and not charted. I'm not a chart person.

The Capture (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 1) ReviewGaurdians of Ga'Hoole is looking like a really great series so far. This author has a very big imagination, and a very stretched vocabulary. This book, #1 The Capture, is very different and I'll tell you why.
There are no people in this book. Just owls. In this book, the owls have dialouge. They're regular characters in the story. It's very exciting to see and think what the owls see and think to each other. I thought that this was very interesting to see how the owls interacted like people. So I kept reading, and started to really like this book.
Soren is a baby owl, just about 2 weeks. He is a barn owl in the kingdom of Tyto. He has a newborn sister, Eglantine, and an older snobby brother Kludd. Soren is living a great life with his parents until he falls out of his nest onto the floor of the woods, or maybe, pushed out. Soren is then scooped up that night by an older adult owl, and taken to an academy for orphan owls. Soren does not like this, he's not an orphan. Soren meets a smaller owl around his age that was also captured. His name is Gylfie. Soren and Gylfie do not like this place, its weird, and scary for them. Soren and Gylfie figure out that this is not a good place to hang out for a while. They have to get out, but how. They have to fly, something that they are not capable of doing as an owlet.
I really recommend this book because, youm really do not want to stop reading. Theres constant action, and constant thinking between the owls. This book is not to long if your worried about that. It's only 235 pages with a chapter about the sequel, The Journey. It's deffinatly action packed when the owls escape. You definitally do not want to stop reading #1 The Capture, and all the other, Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole books.The Capture (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 1) Overview

This is a great book that shows the true spirit of the season. Readers will feel what Junie B. feels as the events unfold. and the ending is very satisfying.The only thing I miss about the newer books is the letter from Barbara Park at the end. Great story for the young reader, especially those with siblings !!Lily Elf OverviewAs a mother of seven and a school bus driver of ten years, Angela R. Buck has experienced many outstanding circumstances involving children. Angela enjoys preserving these memories within her writings. Jackson Jones, Book 1: The Tale of a Boy, an Elf, and a Very Stinky Fish ReviewWhen the publisher contacted me and offered me a review copy of Jackson Jones, I was curious. I can't remember working with Zondervan in the past, and I haven't reviewed very much christian fiction, as I've found it to be a wasteland with very few gems, and I prefer to read books I'll enjoy. However, I'd been spending time purging books in the school library and had been wondering how the genre of children's christian literature had changed since my childhood, and I am predisposed to liking fantasy with slightly nerdy protagonists, so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the book only served to reinforce my frustrations.
Stylistically, this book is distinguished by it's peculiar narrator. As a literary device, an intrusive narrator who addresses readers directly can be a boost to some novels, when used sparingly and with great judiciousness, e.g. the famous line from Jane Eyre, "Reader, I married him." In Jackson Jones, the narrator addresses the reader incessantly. She informs the reader that she is going to take a bathroom break and suggests he do the same, as holding your bladder for a long time is unhealthy. Suspense is attempted by inserting an extra chapter that says "I'm so mean." Large words are used, and then parenthetically defined with examples and commentary.
As a parent, a former teacher, a lover of children and literature for children, I find myself firmly in the camp that believes that children respond best to literature that treats readers with dignity and respect. C.S. Lewis famously wrote in an essay about writing for children "We must meet children as equals in that area of our nature where we are their equals... The child as reader is neither to be patronized nor idolized: we talk to him as man to man." I rarely felt like the narrator could be connecting with eight to eleven-year-old children.
That lack of connection was disappointing, because the story itself was interesting in many ways. The characters, setting, and back story all had good potential. But like most of the christian literature I've encountered, the christian elements were rather heavy handed.
Theologically, I found the message mixed. The idea that God is the author of all of our stories and that he is weaving them all together into one great story is one that I not only believe, but share with my children. However, the book falls into the common western evangelical error that the things we think are most important in our lives (job, where we live, etc.) are most important to God. We can chose the wrong thing, and thus find ourselves wandering away from the story God has for us. In reality, I think the Bible consistently shows that God's story for us has less to do with whether we are concert pianists or businessmen and much more to do with how we live our lives. Do we love our neighbors well? Are we taking care of those in need? Do our lives reflect the values we say we believe? How has the gospel changed us?
There are some great meditations about our identity in Christ in this book. But the idea that we can make a mistake about where we go to college or what career to pursue creates a culture of paralyzing fear that we will miss God's will for our lives that is very real to 21st century North Americans and this may fuel that fire.
In the end, Jackson Jones is a fun story, and I don't think it's dangerous or absolute twaddle. All Jackson wants is to be the hero, just for once in his life. The hero who steps in at the last minute to save the universe. The hero who saves the entire village from a raging fire. Great Aunt Harriett is always telling him find his own story, but so far his story doesn't seem very exciting. Until he falls into Great Aunt Harriett's hair, that is. There Jackson will encounter a world of elves, trap doors, bubblegum-blowing birds, hairy-backed spiders, kangaroo meat, and perilous danger which requires ... a hero.

When Your Grandparent Dies: A Child's Guide to Good Grief (Elf-Help Books for Kids) ReviewI have read 4 books about dying in hopes of finding the "perfect" book to help explain death to my 4 year old. I haven't found the "perfect" book, but this one came the closest and was the most helpful.
This book is actually part of a series of "Elf-Help Books" that feature a little Elf. What I liked about this book is that I was able to get one specifically about a grandparent dying, so it best fit my situation. Also each page has a clear topic title, so we could skip pages that I felt were too much for a 4 year old to understand. There are references to God, Heaven, a funeral, and Cemetery. There are photos of the elf throughout the book helping to show these different things.
If you go to Amazon and type in "Elf Help Books" you will see many titles dealing with death of other family members (death of a parent, a general death one), self esteem problems, moving, jealousy, fear, divorce, learning to be a friend, serious illnesses, being in the hospital, and others. I would recommend this series for a variety of situations that need to be explained to preschoolers.
I also read Up in Heaven by Emma Chichester Clark (a good book, but only deals with the loss of a pet), What's Heaven? by Maria Shriver, and I Miss You: A first look at death by Pat Thomas. But I liked "When your Grandparent Dies" the most out of all of these.
