One Hero, A Savior (Volume 3) ReviewThis book is worth buying. The story line is well written and really makes you think.
If I would have known how excellently written this book was, I would not have waited so long to purchase it.
Definitely a must-have!One Hero, A Savior (Volume 3) OverviewPreston Davis is an all-around Boston guy. He loves his Red Sox, and he also loves his fantasy stories. He is also a recently-converted Christian whose newest fantasy land -- Arida -- is based upon his love of fantasy and Christian teachings, with himself as Arden, the land's God. However, Urcin -- the evil one -- is drawing many of Arden's followers away from the light.Yet Preston knows nothing of this -- until he is transported to his land following a car crash, and it is up to him to save the land. With the help of his halfling followers and a cast of others, Preston journeys to The Dragon's Teeth to face off with Urcin in a battle of Good vs. Evil, with Arida the prize to the victor.

The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies ReviewHaving read many books about Tolkien and the themes he so richly presents in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book for several months. I was not disappointed ! Greg Harvey has taken a very complex trilogy, and along with "The Hobbit", managed to put together an enjoyable and easily readable book which explores all the many facets of Tolkien's world and the characters in it. In the humorous and entertaining style of all the "Dummies" books, we are treated to detailed explanations of the places, beings, and beasts which inhabit the very imaginative mind of the greatest author of the 20th century. If this wasn't enough, Mr. Harvey goes into great detail about the underlying themes in the books, the motivations of the characters, and how the story is relative to our modern world. Touching on philosophy and religion, themes of friendship, good vs. evil, love and loyalty, human frailty, lust for greed and power --- it's all here, and in an intelligent, unbiased presentation. Not too hard to understand or follow, and not "dumbed down" for the lowest common denominator. A superb book that will entertain and provoke you to think. Not at all for dummies ! You'll be glad you bought a copy --- you won't be disappointed. Money well spent for the Tolkien fan !!!The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies OverviewJ.R.R. Tolkien's novels of Middle-earth – The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Silmarillian – have become some of the most famous, and most beloved, literary works of the twentieth century. And the Lord of the Rings films by director Peter Jackson have re-ignited interest in Tolkien and his works, as well as introduced his stories to a new generation of fans.
Even if you've never read the novels and have only seen the films, you know that the world of Middle-earth is a complicated one. Tolkien took great care in representing this world, from creating new languages to including very particular cultural details that add to the richness of the world's fabric. Many other books have been written about Tolkien and his works, but none have come close to providing the kind of reference needed to comprehend the world of Middle-earth. That's what veteran Dummies author and unabashed Tolkien fan Greg Harvey attempts to do in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies.
As the author says in his introduction to the book, this is not an encyclopedia or quick guide to all the diverse beings, languages, and history that make up Tolkien's Middle-earth. Nor is it a set of plot outlines for the novels. Rather, what you'll find in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies is a basic guide to some of the possible linguistic and mythological origins of Middle-earth, plus a rudimentary analysis of its many themes and lessons for our world. This book can help enrich your reading (or re-reading) of Tolkien's novels, and it will challenge you to think about the themes inherent in Tolkien's Middle-earth and their implications in your own life.
Here's just a sampling of the topics you'll find covered in The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies:
Exploring the main themes in Tolkien's works, including immortality and death; the heroic quest; love; fate and free will; and faith and redemption
Investigating the diverse lands of Middle-earth – including the Shire, Gondor, and Mordor – and their significance
Examining the different cultures of Middle-earth, such as Hobbits, Elves, Men, and those wily Wizards
Touring the history of Middle-earth
Understanding Tolkien's creation of new languages to enrich the story of Middle-earth
Top Ten lists on the battles in the War of the Ring, online resources, and the ways the films differ from the novels

So, whether you're reading Tolkien's novels or watching the films for the first time, or you've been a fan for many years and are looking for a new take on Tolkien's works, The Origins of Tolkien's Middle-earth For Dummies can help you enhance your reading or viewing experience for years to come.

The Winter of Candy Canes (Sweet Seasons Novel, A) ReviewThis is the third book in the Sweet Seasons series and it's written for the teen audience (but you don't have to be a teen to enjoy it!).
I haven't read the first two books in the series but I really felt like this could be read as a stand alone and I didn't feel weird jumping in without reading the other two first.
Candace gets hired to work at The Zone once again as a seasonal employee. This time she is given the dangerous job of being Santa's elf. What's so dangerous about that? Plenty.
But in the midst of the usual teen concerns of earning extra spending money and what to get her boyfriend (and other friends) for Christmas, Candace learns how to look beyond herself and what she sees is quite eye-opening.
Working at The Zone has broadened her friendships and in looking for just the right gifts for them she finds out what life is really like for one friend in particular. Candace has a big heart and she's more than willing to do what it takes to make a difference for her friend.
Also, Candace is the leader for a bible study group and is extremely nervous about it, especially when Joy, the holier-than-thou girl, tests her limits.
Candace will probably remember this Christmas season for a long time.
I enjoyed The Winter of Candy Canes and will gladly let my daughter read it and the rest of the series. It was a light, fun read full of action, age-appropriate romance, and spiritual growth. I like that Candace was her own person and didn't form herself around her boyfriend. She's a down-to-earth kind of girl, not a drama queen (although her best friend is one...they make a great pair!).
I also appreciated the various roles Candace played. From home life, to student, to bible study leader, to employee, to friend, to girlfriend. She handled them all very well and showed that teens don't have to have 'tudes. She didn't come across as some perfect, unattainable character. She's the kind of girl you want your daughter to be...and to be friends with.
The Winter of Candy Canes (Sweet Seasons Novel, A) OverviewThey're fun! They're quirky! They're Sweet Seasons---unlike any other girls' books you've ever read. You could call them alternative, God-honoring chick lit.Join Candace Thompson on a sweet, lighthearted, and honest romp through the friendships, romances, family, school, faith, and values that make a girl's life as full as it can be.Seasons change and so will life for at least one park employee.Christmas is coming! And an elf outfit and the minty scent of what seem like a gatrillion candy canes aren't the only adjustments for Candace. Her biggest worry what to get her boyfriend for Christmas turns into a much larger project after Candace is reminded that real needs can be hiding right around the corner. Can this elf capture the true meaning of Christmas in time to make a difference?

The Mark: The Beast Rules the World (Left Behind #8) ReviewI've enjoyed these books and yet I have one REAL BIG problem with them so far. Everyone knows that when you read fiction you have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and tell yourself: "Okay, it's just a book. Everything doesn't have to make sense."
That's fine to a point.
But the LEFT BEHIND series is about events described in the Bible, and it seems to me should be held to a little bit higher standard. I don't expect perfection: the Bible is perfect, everything else is just a book. But I do expect a Christian novel to be thought out well enough by the author(s) that it's not shot full of holes by anyone with a high school education.
I have struggled with this since I read the first book in the series, but have not wanted to criticize the books when there was nothing better on the subject out there to recommend. Well, now I've found something, THE CHRIST CLONE TRILOGY by James BeauSeigneur. BeauSeigneur has done so much to insure credibility and accuracy in all the broad range of areas he covers in his series, that you'll find yourself believing it could all be true. And the way the story depicts the fulfillment of end-times prophecy will have you convinced that the author's got that nailed too.
I suppose I should say that some Christians get upset because the characters sometimes use a four letter word here and there. But, guess what, folks, non-Christians do that from time to time! (Confidentially, I've heard that even Christians have been know to utter a four-letter word.) Still the profanity is very limited. If you get disgusted with a PG-rated movie, you may not want to read these books. But even this is all just part of the accuracy. Does anyone who's read LEFT BEHIND really believe that Leon Fortunado NEVER cusses???
I could go on, but suffice it to say that if you want to read an end-times series that doesn't strain your ability to believe what you're reading, THE CHRIST CLONE is for you.The Mark: The Beast Rules the World (Left Behind #8) Overview

Playing Fair, Having Fun: A Kid's Guide to Sports and Games (Elf-Help Books for Kids) ReviewPlaying Fair, Having A Kid's Guide to Sports and Games (Elf-Help Books for Kids)
I don't know this series of books just doesn't appeal to my boy or to me.
Each book has a page with Christian references. I didn't find anything about THAT in the book reviews.
The information is ok but they just don't make the points in an interesting way that speaks to either of us.Playing Fair, Having Fun: A Kid's Guide to Sports and Games (Elf-Help Books for Kids) Overview

When Your Grandparent Dies: A Child's Guide to Good Grief (Elf-Help Books for Kids) ReviewI have read 4 books about dying in hopes of finding the "perfect" book to help explain death to my 4 year old. I haven't found the "perfect" book, but this one came the closest and was the most helpful.
This book is actually part of a series of "Elf-Help Books" that feature a little Elf. What I liked about this book is that I was able to get one specifically about a grandparent dying, so it best fit my situation. Also each page has a clear topic title, so we could skip pages that I felt were too much for a 4 year old to understand. There are references to God, Heaven, a funeral, and Cemetery. There are photos of the elf throughout the book helping to show these different things.
If you go to Amazon and type in "Elf Help Books" you will see many titles dealing with death of other family members (death of a parent, a general death one), self esteem problems, moving, jealousy, fear, divorce, learning to be a friend, serious illnesses, being in the hospital, and others. I would recommend this series for a variety of situations that need to be explained to preschoolers.
I also read Up in Heaven by Emma Chichester Clark (a good book, but only deals with the loss of a pet), What's Heaven? by Maria Shriver, and I Miss You: A first look at death by Pat Thomas. But I liked "When your Grandparent Dies" the most out of all of these.
