The Keepers of Elenath ReviewSoon after I started this book, I could easily tell it was Bradburn's first novel. The beginning of the plot was confusing: it revealed something awfully quickly, and I couldn't discern the direction of the storyline at all. These starting events were necessary, but could have been written better. About 100 pages in, the story took a solid form and I began to enjoy it. I was a little disappointed when there wasn't too much of the training-in-secret-practices scene that I always enjoy, but it looks as if that will come in the second book. I noticed that many terms were used a few times too many ("former princess," for example) in a short space of time. Overall, the plot and characters steadily improved as the book progressed.
What this means to a Christian: There are many people in the world who call themselves Christians. Many actually are, but some may not have a true understanding. It is the job of those who do to give them, and everyone else, the truth, and an opportunity to know Christ.The Keepers of Elenath OverviewEvil is stirring in Elenath. A rapid chain of events: a righteous king's murder, a dark queen's seizure of the throne, and the stirring of ancient peoples opens a new chapter in Elenath's history. Dark powers seek to control all and a bare few stand against the sinister forces. At the center of the tempest lies Gwaeron, princess of Anirum. Secrets surround her true identity, and the strange gifts she is capable of are sought after by both sides of the silent war. Another evil haunting the land of Elenath; sweeping from the northwestern wasteland to Anirum's eastern coast is the dreaded eves fornost. Hearts of human, elf, etel, and gnome will turnfor good or evil. And the worst is yet to come.

Tales From Gundarland: Eight humorous stories from the land of the incongruous ReviewThis delightful collection of six short stories and two novellas is set in the mythical realm of Gundarland on a planet named Gundar, which, according to Quense, was named after "the omniscient god who accidentally created the universe with an explosive sneeze caused by snorting a larger-than-average dose of His favorite recreational powder." As you can gather, this work is only for older kids and their insightful parents...
Gunderland itself is populated by such diverse races as "dwarfs, humans, elves, half-pints, yuks and a few lesser races...[that]...live cheek-by-jowl in many cases and get along with no more than the usual interracial hostility". And, don't worry, you definitely don't have to be a geek to enjoy their adventures, despite two of the pieces in Tales from Gundarland being satires of two of the Great Bard's (i.e. Shakespeare's) most popular works: "Romeo & Juliet" and "Merchant of Venison" (a send-up of The Merchant of Venice). A few of the tales are under ten pages, while the others vary substantially in length. All of them, however, are side-splittingly funny, and, if you enjoy the writings of Terry Pratchett, you should enjoy these too. Quense's irreverent take on the world of fantasy is most amusing, I find, when he describes the relationships between fellow characters and between man and beast. Mind you, the characterization of the yuks is also a key source of humor, and reminded me somewhat of the trolls in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Their poor grasp on the English language is most evident in the verbal spats between the yuk brothers, Rolf and Ralf. Quense promises to return to these two characters in other stories, as he likes them too much to ignore them.
In "Chasing Dreams", a hilarious spoof on The Mask of Zorro, and a number of other westerns, the showdown at Okidoky Corral is accompanied by cheer-leading molls, who raise some dust linking arms and performing multiple high leg kicks. In fact, one might say that the women tend to be a feisty bunch throughout the tales, including one princess who refuses to be rescued from a tower by a Warrior-Cook, for fear that she will never be able to show her face at court again if she is saved by anyone other than a nobleman ("Boggerts Blue"). The pages teem with loads of swashbuckling adventure, both on land and sea, with heroes and villains aplenty--just don't expect them to be archetypal!
Quense acknowledges the help that he received from an international group of critics known as the Critters, who helped him to shape the stories. Another group of writers who also provided input into the stories was drawn from as far away and as diverse locations as the Canary Islands, Greece, Britain and Ireland. The Rose and the Skull (Dragonlance Bridges of Time, Vol. 4) ReviewI'm new to the entire fantasy Dragonlance series but after accidentally stumbling across Jeff Crook's, The Rose and the Skull, it appears I have some reading to do. Of course, I didn't get all the past references and probably missed half of the inside jokes but hey, you gotta start somewhere.
Crook captured me with his sly humor and tongue-in-cheek descriptions but then was quite the craftsman with the plot and character developments. Lady Jessica was a worthy heroine and I would like to see a book with her and Liam. Not much romance but still, a brooding tension that bordered on romance. Sometimes, less is better anyway. I loved the Gully Dwarves, especially Uhoh, but, what do I know? It seems other reviewers hated that plot line but it appeals to the underdog in me, always a chance.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to reading more in the Dragonlance series, both past and future. The History of the Hobbit, Part 1: Mr. Baggins ReviewReturn to Bag End is the second part of John D. Rateliff's History of the Hobbit. It begins with page 469 and contains the Index for both volumes, so its important to start with Volume I, Mr. Baggins.
Return to Bag End begins with the thirteen dwarves and their hobbit companion's arrival at The Lonely Mountain. Rateliff has identified five phases in the writing of The Hobbit, and this volume begins towards the end of the second phase. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit in fits and spurts over a period of several years, and finally finished it in its first published form by the end of the third phase. Rateliff's fourth phase took place in the late 1940s, when Tolkien had nearly finished The Lord of the Rings and needed to rewrite part of The Hobbit to eliminate some inconsistencies. The most important of these inconsistencies dealt with the matter of how Bilbo came to possess the Ring. In the first published version Gollum gave Bilbo the Ring as a gift. Now Tolkien, to make the Ring darker and more ominous, had Bilbo purloin it from Gollum. Then in 1960 came the fifth phase, when Tolkien attempted to make The Hobbit even closer in tone and spirit to The Lord of the Rings by essentially rewriting it. He wisely abandoned this attempt after a few chapters when a friend advised that while it was brilliant, it wasn't The Hobbit.
As in the first volume, Return to Bag End abounds with fascinating textual notes and short essays interpolated with Tolkien's own words. These include some intriguing speculations, including one on whether the Arkenstone was a Silmaril and another on the ultimate fate of dwarves after their deaths. There are also several Appendices, one on the Denham Tracts, a nineteenth century list of imaginary beings which mentioned "hobbit" several years before Tolkien was even born; another on Tolkien's own speculations on the origin of the word hobbit which includes one of my own favorite childhood stories: "The Hobyahs;" and others dealing with the origins of dwarf names and with Tolkien's correspondence with Arthur Ransome.
Both volumes of The History of the Hobbit are essential additions to Tolkien scholarship. They will provide much fascinating reading and speculation for many years to come for all lovers of Middle-earth.The History of the Hobbit, Part 1: Mr. Baggins OverviewFirst published in 1938, The Hobbit is a story that "grew in the telling," and many characters and events in the published book are completely different from what Tolkien first wrote to read aloud to his young sons as part of their "fireside reads." The Sheikh's Chosen Wife (Hot-Blooded Husbands) (Harlequin Presents) ReviewI continue to believe that Michelle Reid is unsurpassed in the "Harlequin Presents" stable of writers, and her latest offering certainly supports that belief. "The Sheikh's Chosen Wife" is richly detailed, with complex characters, an exotic setting and a multi-layered plot. It also allows us to revisit two of my all-time favorite characters from ANY book - Sheik Raschid Al Kadah and his wife, the former Evangeline Delahaye, from Reid's book "The Mistress Bride" (Harlequin Presents #2056, October 1999).
As with most of Reid's books, the story in "The Sheikh's Chosen Wife" begins well into the main couple's relationship. Sheikh Hassan ben Khalifa Al-Qadim and Leona Frayne have been married for six years, separated for the last year. I very much enjoy this aspect of Reid's writing, and it is a technique she utilizes frequently. Because the two protagonists know each other, intimately, it allows the author to deal with the deeper and more complex issues in a relationship. And this one is complex indeed - a barren English wife to an Arabian sheikh, he the heir to his father's seat of power. Reid does a masterful job of portraying the Arab culture, while contrasting that with the fact that the sheikh was educated at Eton and married a western wife.
To say much more would begin reveal the twists and turns of story's layered plot. It is the story of passionate people, deeply in love and challenged by forces and responsibilities beyond their control. It is a story of family, of loyalty, of duty and of friendship. The writing is intense, and allows us to view the action from several viewpoints. I read the book in one sitting, and anticipate revisiting it as I make it a part of my permanent collection. I was also excited to read that two sequels to this story will follow: "Ethan's Temptress Bride" in September 2002; and "The Arabian Love-Child" in December 2002, which will be the story of Rafiq, Hassan's brother.
I always recommend Michelle Reid, but this book may be her best yet. A Visitor to Sandahl: Tales of the Bard (Volume 1) ReviewEven if you have never heard of Methanasia (which I hadn't), this compilation is terrific fun. The contributing authors riff on the characters and play off each other to take the reader deeper and deeper into a very special place, where a vampire hotel night clerk, dwarves, warriors, herbalists, a girl who survives a terrible family tragedy to be propelled into a whole new life in Methanasia, a psychic female assassin, and plenty of travelers come and go.
It's rather like taking a trip with a tour group, where personalities are revealed over time as you explore the customs and daily life of a place you've never been before.
Just, please, skip the meat pies that are proffered as you enter Methanasia. The Elf Queen: Clan Elves of the Bitterroot Series ReviewI enjoyed the first book in the Bitterroot Series and am looking forward to seeing where this series leads.
I was charmed by the setting for this seemingly straight-ahead fantasy. We've seen elements of the plot before in many other fantasy works (elf clans battle amongst each other for supremacy with the involvement of an apparently human protagonist), but Alexander gives it interesting "green" and "native American" twists that make the story fresh. Present day Missoula, Montana is a terrific setting, made even more so because it isn't the first place I would have thought to go searching for elves.
I also liked the hippy vibe of the human characters in the book. The band of latte-drinking, slacker/hacker, eco-warriors already live in a kind of fantasy world of their own construction and the events in the book cause them to rethink their lives in different ways. One of the humans, an agoraphobic with a painful past, hasn't left his apartment in years. He is drawn out of his own world and discovers the "real" world is more inviting than he could have imagined.
This is the first of a series, but it stands alone as a complete story with a satisfying ending.
I had quibbles with a couple of plot points. For example, why did Jelani have to travel all the way to Indiana to pick up a couple of boxes of papers when her stepmother could have just sent them via UPS? The fate and role of the cop ex-boyfriend at the end fell flat (literally). But overall this was a nice piece of escapist fantasy with interesting characters and told with a fresh voice, and I'm looking forward to returning to the Bitterroot Mountains when the next installment comes out.The Elf Queen: Clan Elves of the Bitterroot Series OverviewWhen Jelani tries on a real glass slipper left lying on the sidewalk, it splits in half and out pours dozens of two-inch high creatures who scurry away into the shadows. The Black Elf of Seaward Isle ReviewThe story opens with a heavily detailed prologue that may overwhelm readers straight out of the gate. It does give lots of background information, but it is very heavily massed with characters, places and different paths for a plot.
Parker's style with writing can be seen as "immature" or "young" as it is obvious that she is a novice writer. Nevertheless, the language used throughout the book is easy to understand, and it wont have you looking up unknown words.
The basis of The Black elf has the potential to be something great. but the lack a pro editor, overabundance of characters, and somewhat confusing forward plot line, hinder the book.
Pros:
-easy to understand language
-fantasy plot
-fast moving action
-a working website with short stories and blogs ([...])
-nice material for a book
-relevantly good price
Cons:
-overabundance of information
-somewhat confusing plot (only at times)
-novice writing errors
-pretty long, with extra information not needed(goes back to overabundance of info)

Pearls of the Elf Lords ReviewI don't normally read science fiction, but I've been trying to broaden my horizons and I fell in love with the characters after reading the first chapter!
I only have positive things to say about Pearls of the Elf Lords. It was full of unexpected twists & turns that kept me reading more. The adventures of Landis and his pack of warriors was well worth the ride as they set out to retrieve the lost sword of Alexon in hopes of earning Princess Petra's right to the throne. They learn much on their journey and have much to fear as they enter into battles.
The beloved characters had me cheering for their success. I challenge others to look outside your comfort zone and give this science fiction adventure a try...I was glad I did!
