When Santa Fell To Earth ReviewBen is just beginning to get excited about the forthcoming holiday season, when he learns that his parents have decided to forgo the chilly weather, and head to a tropical environment where they can hang out in the sun, and sip fruity drinks. This news instantly sends Ben into a downward spiral, leaving him upset, and wishing that Christmas vacation will never come. But when he encounters a strange young man named Niklas Goodfellow, all of Ben's cynical emotions fly out the window. Niklas has seemingly appeared on Ben's street out of nowhere, his colorful caravan sitting in a strange spot. On a dare, Ben runs up to the door of the caravan, and meets the peculiar person, and so starts the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Ben soon learns that Niklas is the last real Santa Claus, and that his caravan - pulled by his currently missing, marzipan-loving reindeer, Twinklestar - crashed to earth in the midst of a storm, and is now stuck on this oft-times money-hungry street as he searches for the snow white colored reindeer, and attempts to fix the wheels on his broken caravan. But Niklas is not alone. He has brought two chubby angels with him - Matilda and Emmanuel - who flit around the good-natured man; along with a chest full of little elves who are preparing presents for all of the good little boys and girls. But there is one thing lurking about Niklas that could put him out of business for good. An extreme evil known only as Gerold Geronimus Golynch - a bad Santa who wants nothing more than to take Niklas' boots, and turn him into a bar of chocolate. But now, with the help of Ben, and a bug-eyed girl named Charlotte, along with her dog Mutt, Niklas plans to fight off Gerold, and bring the true spirit of Christmas back to every girl and boy in the world. But if he fails, Christmas may be lost forever.
Cornelia Funke is certainly one of the most intrepid new fantasy writers to hit the scene in years, and the release of her holiday novel, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH, only illustrates that fact even more. Funke's trademark magical scenes, and enchanting moments prevail in this fantastical account of two children looking to help the "real" Santa Claus save Christmas. Funke adds her own little touches regarding the holidays, from making Niklas Goodfellow look quite different from what Santa Claus is known to look like; to giving the elves snippy personalities laced with bad language and fierce tempers. The angels Matilda and Emmanuel are saintly characters, whose good-natured, loving attitudes stay true to the spirit of Christmas; while the marzipan-loving Twinklestar is a supreme trouble maker, who you can't help but love. The friendship that develops between Ben and the unlikely Charlotte is quite a treat to witness; while the snowy world of Yule Land is a beauty all in itself. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations (sometimes full-page ones) by Paul Howard, WHEN SANTA FELL TO EARTH is a wonderful, fantastical joyride into the world of Santa Claus, and the many hardships he encounters each year. An unstoppable holiday thrill ride that will leave everyone in the Christmas spirit!

Santopia - Book One: Santa & the Lost Princess ReviewFar north, in the magical realm of Santopia, the current Santa has a new son. The Wizard issues a prophesy for this new heir to the kingdom, which says baby Nicky will marry the first girl born after him.
But over in the kingdom of Drear, the Countess is nearly about to give birth. After hearing the prophesy, she induces labor and is pleased when her daughter, Dazzle is born. That is, until she learns another couple has also given birth to a daughter, who may have been born before Dazzle.
Upsetting the Countess of Drear is never a good idea, so this poor couple needs to do something quickly before they and their new daughter lose their lives. Escape is dangerous and nearly impossible, and intrigue and treachery abound.
This story is set at Christmas, and is full of colorful holiday imagery. Many of the Santa traditions are included, making the story feel real. But one thing I found a little confusing was the different races at Santopia that all ended in "elves" - Gelves, Trelves, etc.
I enjoyed this story, and found myself cheering for the young couple to save themselves and their daughter. But I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the ending, which left the story at an obvious cliff-hanger. If you love Santa and Christmas, I think you'll enjoy this fast-paced and fun tale.

Ace Hawkins and the Wrath of Santa Claus ReviewNo, the North Pole will never be the same. From the time our unlikely hero Ace Hawkins steps off the tracked sled amid factory-domes with "smoke stacks belching flames" and guards with M-16s, all treasured legends of Santa Claus and his happy elves are bashed. As if run through the warped contraptions that abound in the reinvented North Pole of Ace Hawkins and the Wrath of Santa Claus, favorite traditions of jolly Santa with his friendly, industrious elves are crushed and shredded, but never wholly disappear. They just come out distorted and prone toward evil.
Ace is one of those solitary figures, the mysterious adventurer--strapped with double-barreled shotgun, semiautomatics, and a razor-sharp katana--that you're never quite sure about. He comes to Santa's palace because Santa (an emaciated man who sits behind a massive desk worrying about competition from Taiwanese toy manufacturers and profits in Swedish mafia drug trafficking) offers a suitcase of gold bars to kill Jack Frost who is leading the elves' rebellion. Ace isn't one to turn down money, but as he inspects the workshops and witnesses the ruthless brutality of the D.E.B.B. mercenaries against the elves still trying to build toys, his loyalty seems to be less to Santa and more to himself. When asked "Just whose side are you on?" his answer is "Mine."
An ambush greets Ace on his first trek through the workshops, and from there, action doesn't stop. The novel both attacks and plays with the conventions of the action-adventure genre, with heroes performing wild feats, nonstop action, bizarre and brutal contraptions, and weapons topping weapons, but threaded through the scenes is a dark humor--absurdities, blunders, and lunatic characters--that surprises the reader into laughter even as people are blown apart.
Jack Frost is a genius character, wildly insane to the point of idiocy. Yet safe on his Yule Tide ship stranded in unmoving ice, with his armored suit and Recon Rats and mutant elves, he's a worthy foe for Ace and a master inventor--even if he shouts ridiculously, "We've hit an iceberg! Man the lifeboats! Women and children first!" at the first rumblings of attack. And then there's the oddball Lucky, dressed in his bright green Leprechaun suit, prancing through scenes obliviously, an elf addicted to Leprechaun Green Whiskey who plays a key in Santa's greedy quest.
The book manages to toss in some other tried and true fairy tales, like Snow White, and bash them to pieces, and it's all part of the legends warped but still recognizable, messing with the reader's mind.
There's a certain marveling at the inventions this writer creates and the thorough details of this North Pole landscape with its maze of tunnels, abundant weapons, and lunatic contraptions that would be reminiscent of the marvels of Christmas if they weren't twisted to the brutal work of greed. Or maybe there's a bit of a message in this crazy vision. It is an absolute favorite tradition in our house. My daughter still talks about it and keeps asking when the elf is coming to stay. My husband had a lot of fun with her and making up stories about the elf on a daily basis and the funny places I found it daily (this elf mysteriously moves around the house to keep an eye on all of us). We used it not only as inspiration for our daughter to be on her best behavior but it kept us - parents - in line, too!!
