Scion's Blood Book Two of The Chronicles of Firma (The Chroncles of Firma) ReviewThe second book of Pat Nelson Child's Chronicles of Firma trilogy, Scion's Blood, is just as adventurous and fun as the first installment was. The story begins rather slowly and the first few chapters are somewhat domesticky. (Is that even a word?) By that, I mean Rokey and Flaskamper are having serious marital problems. It's been three years since Orphan's Quest ended and Rokey's studies and training with the High Mage is taking all of his time and leaving very little for Flaskamper, who naturally is feeling neglected. With both of them misinterpreting each other's actions, a wedge is driven between them and they begin drifting apart. But then two separate kidnappings occur - first, the young daughter of the King of Duncileer, and then Rokey himself, and here the story really kicks into high gear. The rescue attempts are orchestrated and the tension is high as the two separate story lines play well against each other. More history is revealed of the nefarious Order of the Bone, and new heroic characters are introduced.
I also must give kudos to the author for a very poignant scene involving the character of Fia. It actually took place in the timeframe of the first book, but Childs very wisely held it back to be included in this book as a flashback. The reveal is much more powerful being recalled after three years of healing and reflection than it would have been if it were kept chronologically in place in the first book.
This book is a little darker and a bit gorier that the first. That's generally true of most Fantasy/Sci-fi serials, even the Harry Potter books kept getting darker and scarier. There's also a bit more sexual innuendo, but it's still teen safe. Only the most conservative, fundamentalist parents would object, and they would probably object more to the gay aspect of it anyway.
The only minor quibble I have is that nearly all the characters have a tendency to overuse nicknames and terms of endearment. While it's true that Flaskamper and his brother Alrontin are very close, it sometimes felt a little too cloying for them to be dribbling sweetness to each other.
But I digress. For me, Scion's Blood is a solidly-crafted fantasy adventure, with plenty of action-filled battles, magic and romance. I happily await the conclusion in Numen's Trust.

Three years have passed since Rokey and his companions saved the Brotherhood of the Noble Contemplative from infiltration by the evil Order of the Bone. In the kingdom of Duncileer, palace unrest and the threat of war rattle the peace of mind of the gentle giant, Lorq, his wife Kyzee and their two-year-old son, Broq. Fia, feeling restless, has arrived from the distant pleasure realm of Respite. When a plot to murder King Hobar unfolds, Kyzee, now captain of the King's Guard, is caught up in a web of betrayal and intrigue that will ripple throughout the land.Meanwhile, in the elf forest where they've settled, Rokey and Flaskamper are encountering some serious bumps in the road to marital bliss. Flaskamper is battling feelings of despondency and suffocation, and Rokey, unable to communicate with him, has buried himself in his studies with the High Elf Mage, Ellispon. When the two decide to separate, it gives Rokey's enemies in the Order of the Bone the opportunity they've been waiting for . They abduct him from Elfwood and whisk him away to their stronghold in the north, intent on sacrificing him in order to achieve the goal for which they've worked so long - the return of their living god, Cyure.Now Flaskamper, joined once again by his old friends, as well as some new companions, must embark on a journey to rescue Rokey, as well as see if they can recover the love that first brought the two of them together. Once again the journey takes them to the east, this time to the dark and danger-filled kingdom of Ulgiarrah, then north through the haunted forest of Gloomsveldt, to Moribar, their enemy's seat of power. But time is against them. The sacrifice is to take place at the rising of the next new moon. As they battle to overcome one hindrance after another, Flaskamper becomes more and more desperate to reach his true love before it is too late to save his life, their love . perhaps even Firma itself.
