'Twas the Night Before Christmas 21st Century Edition ReviewI think serendipity is that thing where you're looking for one thing and you stumble on another. I was looking for a gag gift/stocking stuffer for a friend for the holidays, and I came across this gem. If only the truth is funny and laughter is the best medicine, "Twas the Night Before Christmas, 21st Century Edition" is a whoop-ass dose of truth serum. Being a huge devotee of that near-extinct form of comedy that is satire, I wasn't prepared to find something that not only made me laugh out loud, but I could tell is going to spawn laughs after numerous readings. The text of this send-up is layered with references that actually do more than just play on the surface of the joke they're making--in other words, it's got dimension. It braids images that traffic in homespun holiday cheer while cracking your funny bone with captions written to inflict whiplash they are so sharply drawn. It swings effortlessly between lofty high-brow references (William Safire) that get their requisite share of chuckles, to low-brow humor so pungent you'll remember why you don't like your frat-boy cousin Dirk, and everything in-between. And there is a faux Maxim magazine cover that elevates the form to dizzying heights of comedic lunacy, something this book does effortlessly. And if that isn't enough, it actually has an ending that buttons the proceedings perfectly. So, I'll buy two copies. One for my friend. And the other for me.'Twas the Night Before Christmas 21st Century Edition OverviewIn Kluger and Slavin's rendition, Christmas is no longer a time of sparkling snow globes and neighborly good will, but rather a celebration of profits, bonuses, and cutthroat competition--complete with disgruntled elves, outsourced Santas, union conflicts, Twittered conspiracies, randy reindeer, media hysteria, factory relocations, toxic merchandise, and a giant leveraged buyout that rocks the world from pole to pole.Packing their verse with hilariously spun rhymes ("The workers grew grim, as they churlishly chored / while Santa grew haplessly, craplessly bored") and even funnier illustrations (picture Santa jumping on Oprah's couch and Mrs. Claus in a racy Maxim cover photo), Kluger and Slavin spike the holiday eggnog with smart and saucy sass--not to mention loads of laughs. The clever concept is executed with wit, and the design is incredibly charming. I love the rules for dress code, sick days, and vacation days (of course elves don't get Christmas off!). I disagree with reviewers who are in search of "dark humor" because I think that this little book has the perfect tone: It's witty but also leaves you with holiday cheer! Think again! Discovered somewhere in the vast confines of a Newark warehouse used to store elf clothing for Christmas displays (and right beside a half-pint of rye), this tattered book blows the lid off the inside doings at the North Pole. The holiday workshop has been a secret society for far too long, keeping mum about its office practices, low or non-existent wages, hazardous weather duty, squalid living conditions (elves and reindeer live together), and big-brother snooping. It's even been said that the management can see you when you're sleeping! Santa jolly? We think not. This playful "facsimile" edition of the ancient handbook makes a great holiday gift. Give it to those you love…and save them from the big boss up North!

Lords and Ladies ReviewOne of Pratchett's favorite comedic tools is inversion; in Lords and Ladies, he inverts the elves of Shakespeare and Tolkein. In Pratchett's hands, they are far from noble and dangerously evil.
For decades, the Elves have been kept out of the little kingdom of Lancre by a circle of stones called the Dancers, made of meteor iron. But while the Lancre witches, Esme Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick, have been away (as described in "Witches Abroad"), a few young gels have been playing at witchcraft, dancing up by the Dancers with their knickers off. That's always dangerous. It could let the Elves back in. Especially since it is Circle Time, when all those universes line up and the walls between them get thin.
Can Granny, Nanny and Magrat protect Lancre from the Lords and Ladies? They'll need help, not just from Hodgesaargh, master of the mews and Mr. Brooks, the Royal Beekeeper. It may take Wizards Archchancellor Ridcully (former suitor of Esme Weatherwax!), Ponder Stibbons, the Bursar and the Librarian; and the Lancre Morris Dancers, who, despite their vows, may have to do the Stick and Bucket Dance just one more time. It may even take Ynci, the half-mythical former queen of Lancre. After all, the wedding of King Verence and Magrat is supposed to happen.
What makes this and almost all of the Pratchett books extraordinary isn't just his lampooning of myth, comedic inversions, literary allusions, spoofs of physics and hysterical dialog; Pratchett give you something to think about. The power of myth, for example, and why glamour, good looks and style may be dangerous. A Pratchett novel makes you thoughtful.
The Witches series isn't my favorite, but among the Witches stories this is one of the best. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are among the best-developed of Pratchett's regular characters. They are fully realized here - warts and all.
A book to read and re-read with pleasure. Very highly recommended.Lords and Ladies Overview
